Product Overview
Model: AXIS P1487-LE
Who This Is For
When long-range outdoor coverage with onboard analytics is the priority, the AXIS P1487-LE sits in a different class to standard IP bullet cameras. Designed for perimeter lines, long driveway approaches, loading docks, and industrial yard coverage, this 5MP bullet pairs a varifocal lens with AXIS OptimizedIR to maintain usable illumination across the full field of view - without the hotspot overexposure common in fixed-IR designs. The P1487-LE runs AXIS Object Analytics natively on the camera, enabling edge-based human and vehicle classification without relying on NVR processing resources. It suits installers and security integrators specifying cameras for sites where footage quality under variable lighting conditions matters and where false alarm reduction is part of the project brief. AXIS Lightfinder technology keeps colour detail visible in near-dark conditions, making this a strong candidate for sites that operate across a full 24-hour cycle.
What This Camera Actually Does
OptimizedIR Illumination
AXIS OptimizedIR automatically adjusts IR intensity and beam angle as the lens zooms, preventing the overexposed centre hotspot that makes standard IR cameras unreliable at closer ranges. The result is even illumination across the full frame at whatever focal length you dial in during install.
5MP Resolution with Forensic WDR
The 5MP sensor captures fine detail across approaches and wide outdoor zones. Forensic WDR handles simultaneous bright and dark areas - such as a vehicle entering a shaded gate from a sunlit road - without washing out licence plates or losing shadow detail.
AXIS Object Analytics on the Edge
Human and vehicle classification runs directly on the camera's onboard processor, not on the NVR. This reduces false alerts from wind-blown foliage, animals, or lighting changes - and keeps analytics functional even if the NVR is temporarily offline or under load.
AXIS Lightfinder Technology
Lightfinder is designed to retain colour video in very low light conditions where most cameras switch to monochrome IR mode. For sites with minimal ambient lighting - such as unlit yards or rural driveways - colour detail helps distinguish clothing colours and vehicle types overnight.
IP66 and IK10 Rated Housing
The P1487-LE carries IP66 weather sealing and IK10 impact resistance, meeting the requirements for exposed outdoor positions including fence lines, building corners, and pole mounts where the camera may be within reach. The housing tolerates direct water exposure and deliberate physical interference.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Commercial Sites: Specifying cameras for warehouses, logistics yards, and manufacturing facilities where edge analytics reduce false alarms and the 5MP sensor provides evidential-grade footage across wide outdoor zones.
- Infrastructure and Utilities Projects: Sites with long perimeter fence lines, substations, or remote access points where OptimizedIR and Lightfinder technology are needed to maintain usable footage across a full overnight shift.
- School and Institutional Campuses: Covering extended driveway approaches, car parks, and building perimeters where the varifocal lens allows one camera model to serve varying coverage distances across the site.
- Multi-Site Retail and Fuel Forecourts: Installers managing large outdoor forecourt areas who need consistent image quality under mixed day/night lighting and want AXIS Object Analytics to filter vehicle and pedestrian activity without adding server-side processing load.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS P1487-LE does several things well: OptimizedIR keeps night footage evenly lit regardless of zoom setting, Forensic WDR handles the high-contrast outdoor lighting that defeats many bullet cameras, and edge-based AXIS Object Analytics means classification happens on the camera itself rather than consuming NVR processing headroom. The varifocal lens gives installers real flexibility across different site geometries without stocking multiple focal length variants. Where this camera is not the right fit: if your project requires active deterrence such as a strobe or audible alarm triggered on detection, a TiOC-type camera serves that use case better. If the primary requirement is wide-area panoramic coverage from a single mounting point, a multi-sensor or fisheye camera covers more ground with fewer blind spots. The P1487-LE is available through Security Australia and suits projects where image quality, reliable IR, and onboard analytics carry the most weight in the specification.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The P1487-LE uses a varifocal lens, so budget time during commissioning to set the focal length and focus before locking the housing down. AXIS OptimizedIR adapts to your chosen zoom setting, but the IR performance is calibrated to that fixed position - re-zooming after sealing the housing means reopening it. Confirm your PoE switch or injector output matches the camera's power requirement before installation, as the P-series AXIS cameras draw more than basic 802.3af budget at full IR output.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are covering a long outdoor approach, fence line, or loading dock where OptimizedIR and 5MP resolution need to work together across varying distances and lighting conditions.
- Good match if: Your project requires onboard analytics for human and vehicle classification to reduce false alarms without adding VMS server load - AXIS Object Analytics runs directly on the camera.
- You may need a different model if: Your brief includes active deterrence on detection - a camera with integrated strobe and speaker alarm (such as a TiOC-type model) is purpose-built for that requirement and will be more effective than a standard IR bullet.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a 5MP outdoor bullet with adaptive IR illumination, onboard human and vehicle analytics, and a varifocal lens to cover a single defined approach or zone at high image quality.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires wide-area coverage from a single camera position - a multi-sensor panoramic camera or 180-degree model covers significantly more ground with fewer blind spots and fewer mounting points.
- Pairs well with: An AXIS-compatible NVR or VMS platform that supports AXIS Object Analytics event handling, and a managed PoE switch with sufficient per-port power budget for the P-series draw at full IR output.
Common Questions
-
Does AXIS Object Analytics work without a VMS or NVR connected?
Yes. AXIS Object Analytics runs entirely on the camera's onboard processor, so human and vehicle classification events are generated at the edge regardless of whether the NVR is online. Alerts and metadata can be pushed to a VMS when the connection is restored, and the camera can also trigger local outputs independently - useful for remote sites with variable network uptime. -
Will OptimizedIR actually make a difference over standard fixed IR?
Yes, particularly with a varifocal lens. Standard IR illuminators emit a fixed beam that either overexposes the close foreground at wide angle or fails to reach the subject at full zoom. AXIS OptimizedIR adjusts beam width to match the current zoom setting, so the illuminated area stays proportional to the field of view. This is most noticeable in scenes with subjects at varying distances from the camera. -
What does IK10 mean for an outdoor installation?
IK10 is the highest rating in the IEC 62262 impact protection scale, indicating the housing can withstand 20 joules of impact - equivalent to a 5kg mass dropped from 400mm. In practical installation terms, the P1487-LE housing is rated to resist deliberate interference including strikes to the camera body at accessible outdoor positions such as fence corners, gate posts, and low eave mounts. -
Does this camera work with non-AXIS NVR systems?
Yes, with some limitations. The P1487-LE streams standard H.264 and H.265 video and is ONVIF Profile S compliant, so it will connect to most third-party NVRs and VMS platforms. However, AXIS Object Analytics event data and deep integration features are fully supported only on AXIS Camera Station and VMS platforms with native AXIS integration. Basic recording and motion detection will function on generic ONVIF-compatible systems. -
Will this camera work for a site that needs coverage in complete darkness with no ambient light?
Yes, within the IR range of the OptimizedIR illuminators. In zero ambient light, the camera switches to monochrome IR mode. AXIS Lightfinder extends colour visibility into very low light conditions but is not a full-colour-in-darkness technology - colour detail requires at least minimal ambient light. For confirmed zero-lux colour coverage, a dedicated full-colour illumination camera or a camera paired with external white-light illuminators would be more appropriate. The team at Security Australia can help match the right technology to your specific lighting conditions. -
What PoE standard does the AXIS P1487-LE require?
The P1487-LE supports IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at PoE. At full IR output, the camera draws more power than the 15.4W maximum of 802.3af, so specifying an 802.3at (PoE+) switch or injector is recommended for reliable operation in all modes. Using an 802.3af-only switch may cause the camera to reduce IR output or draw insufficient power under peak load, particularly in cold ambient temperatures where IR demand increases.
