Product Overview
Model: P1485-LE
Who This Is For
When long-range outdoor coverage with AI-driven classification is the priority, the Axis P1485-LE sits in a different category to standard IP bullet cameras. This is a camera for commercial and industrial sites where identifying whether a detected object is a person or a vehicle - before an operator responds - genuinely matters. The motorised varifocal lens and OptimizedIR make it well suited to perimeter lines, loading dock entries, car parks, and extended approaches where a fixed-lens camera runs out of reach. Installers specifying education campuses, utilities infrastructure, logistics yards, or mid-size commercial properties will find the P1485-LE's AXIS Object Analytics and Lightfinder 2.0 technology address the two most common complaints on these sites: too many false alarms at night, and too little detail at distance during the day.
What This Camera Actually Does
AXIS Object Analytics
Deep learning runs directly on the camera, classifying detected objects as humans or vehicles in real time. This means your VMS or alarm system receives a categorised trigger rather than raw motion - significantly reducing false alarm call-outs on busy outdoor sites.
Lightfinder 2.0
Axis's second-generation low-light sensor technology captures usable colour detail in near-darkness without switching to black-and-white IR mode. For outdoor environments with minimal ambient lighting - access roads, yard perimeters - this delivers recognisable colour imagery where standard cameras go monochrome.
OptimizedIR Illumination
The IR illuminators automatically adjust beam width to match the current lens zoom position, avoiding the overexposed foreground and dark background problem common on fixed-IR bullet cameras. Coverage stays evenly lit across the full depth of the scene.
Motorised Varifocal Lens
The 3-9mm motorised varifocal lens is remotely adjustable after installation, so the field of view can be refined from the NVR or Axis software without physically accessing the camera housing - useful when cameras are mounted at height or in difficult access positions.
Electronic Image Stabilisation
Built-in electronic stabilisation compensates for vibration from wind, nearby machinery, or traffic. On pole-mounted or elevated bracket installations where camera shake is a known issue, this keeps footage usable without adding a separate mechanical dampening solution.
IP66/IP67, IK10 and NEMA 4X
Fully sealed against dust and high-pressure water jets, impact-rated to IK10, and NEMA 4X certified for corrosive environments. The P1485-LE is built to a spec that covers coastal sites, wash-down areas, and industrial yards without requiring an additional weatherproof housing.
Who Buys This Model
- Logistics and warehouse operators: Loading dock entries and yard perimeters where vehicle vs. person classification via AXIS Object Analytics reduces nuisance alarms triggered by forklifts or trucks during operational hours.
- Commercial property and facilities managers: Multi-tenancy sites or large car parks where the motorised varifocal lens allows coverage zones to be adjusted remotely as tenancy layouts change, without sending a technician up a ladder.
- Utilities and critical infrastructure: Substations, water treatment facilities, and communications sites where IK10 and NEMA 4X ratings meet site risk requirements and the operating temperature range of -40°C to 50°C covers Australia's climate extremes.
- Education campuses: Long fence lines and extended car park approaches where Lightfinder 2.0 colour imaging at night gives security staff usable identification detail without the cost of supplementary lighting infrastructure.
- Security integrators specifying Axis ecosystems: Installers who need native AXIS Camera Application Platform support, direct VMS integration, and cybersecurity hardening built into the camera firmware as a baseline requirement for enterprise clients.
Honest Assessment
The P1485-LE does the things that matter on a serious outdoor installation particularly well: the combination of Lightfinder 2.0 and OptimizedIR means night imagery is genuinely useful rather than technically compliant, and the onboard AXIS Object Analytics delivers classification accuracy that measurably reduces false alarm fatigue on monitored sites. The motorised varifocal lens and electronic image stabilisation remove two common post-installation headaches. For an integrator building an Axis-based system, the ACAP support and cybersecurity architecture also meet enterprise procurement requirements that generic IP cameras do not. Where it will not be the right fit: if the application needs 360-degree or wide-area panoramic coverage with fewer mounting points, a multi-sensor or fisheye model will cover more ground per camera. At 2MP, it is also not the right tool for number plate capture on fast-moving traffic - a dedicated ANPR camera with frame-rate priority serves that scenario better. Available through Security Australia.
Before You Buy
PoE Budget: The P1485-LE requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) - not standard PoE (802.3af). Confirm your switch or injector delivers at least 30W per port before installing. A standard 15.4W PoE port will not power this camera reliably. Check your NVR's PoE spec sheet or budget for a PoE+ capable switch if you are adding this camera to an existing installation.
Lens Setup: The motorised varifocal is remotely adjustable, but initial focus and zoom should be set during commissioning with a live view open on the VMS or AXIS IP Utility. The camera's remote focus function works best when the target scene has clear contrast elements at the intended depth of field - set it at the time of day or lighting condition that matters most for your monitoring requirement.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are monitoring a long outdoor approach, perimeter fence line, or loading dock entry where you need onboard AI classification of people vs. vehicles and reliable colour imaging after dark without supplementary lighting.
- Good match if: The installation environment is coastal, industrial, or subject to wash-down and you need a camera that meets IK10, IP67, and NEMA 4X ratings without additional protective enclosures.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is wide-area coverage of a large open space with minimal mounting positions - a multi-sensor panoramic camera will cover more ground per unit and may be a more cost-effective solution for that layout.

How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need onboard AI classification (person vs. vehicle), Lightfinder 2.0 colour low-light performance, and a hardened outdoor housing that meets IK10, IP67, and NEMA 4X without a separate protective enclosure.
- You may need a different model if: Your application is wide-area open space coverage with limited mounting positions - a multi-sensor panoramic camera will provide broader simultaneous coverage per unit in that layout.
- Pairs well with: A PoE+ managed switch with sufficient per-port wattage, an Axis-compatible NVR or VMS platform that can receive and act on AXIS Object Analytics metadata, and edge storage via a high-endurance microSD card for local backup.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera work with standard PoE switches?
No. The P1485-LE requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), which supplies up to 30W per port - standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af) at 15.4W is not sufficient. Before installing, confirm that every port you intend to use on your switch or NVR is rated for PoE+. Using a standard PoE port will result in the camera failing to power on or operating unreliably. -
Will this camera reduce false alarms compared to standard motion detection?
Yes, meaningfully so. AXIS Object Analytics runs on the ARTPEC-7 processor inside the camera and classifies detections as humans or vehicles before sending an alert. Standard motion detection triggers on any pixel change - wind, rain, headlights, animals. By filtering to specific object types, the P1485-LE substantially reduces nuisance alarms on busy outdoor sites like car parks, yards, and perimeter fence lines. -
How does the motorised varifocal lens work after installation?
The 3-9mm motorised varifocal lens is adjusted remotely via the camera's web interface, AXIS Device Manager, or a compatible VMS - no physical access to the camera housing is needed after mounting. This is particularly useful for cameras installed at height or on poles, where returning to adjust focus manually would require a lift or ladder. Initial commissioning should still be done with a live feed open to confirm the field of view is set correctly. -
What does Lightfinder 2.0 actually mean for night image quality?
Lightfinder 2.0 is Axis's second-generation low-light sensor and processing technology, designed to retain colour imagery in near-dark conditions rather than switching to monochrome IR mode. In practice, this means that in environments with very low ambient light - streetlit car parks, partially lit access roads - the camera continues to capture colour detail that helps with identification. It works alongside OptimizedIR rather than replacing it; in full darkness, IR illumination takes over. -
Is the P1485-LE suitable for number plate capture on moving vehicles?
Not as a primary ANPR solution. At 2MP resolution with a standard frame rate, the P1485-LE is designed for perimeter monitoring, object classification, and scene coverage - not dedicated licence plate recognition on fast-moving traffic. For ANPR applications involving vehicles travelling at speed through a lane or gate, a dedicated ANPR camera with higher frame rate priority and purpose-built recognition software will deliver reliable read rates that this camera is not specified for. -
Does the P1485-LE support third-party apps or custom analytics?
Yes. The camera supports AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP), which allows certified third-party analytics applications to be installed and run directly on the camera's processor alongside AXIS Object Analytics. This is relevant for integrators building specialised solutions - for example, queue detection, occupancy counting, or site-specific intrusion logic - without relying on server-side processing. The range of available ACAP applications is listed in the Axis Application Library. The P1485-LE is part of the Security Australia range. -
Will the electronic image stabilisation help if the camera is pole-mounted?
Yes, within a defined range of vibration. The built-in EIS compensates for minor to moderate vibration - the kind produced by wind loading on a pole, passing heavy vehicles, or nearby plant and machinery. It will not fully compensate for severe structural movement or an incorrectly tensioned mounting bracket. For pole-mounted installations, ensure the bracket is rigid and the pole itself is adequately footed; EIS then handles the residual vibration that would otherwise cause blurring in footage.
