Built as a compact indoor mini dome for retail, office, and public space surveillance, the AXIS M4216-LV delivers 4MP resolution with a varifocal motorised lens that can be remotely zoomed and auto-focused without a site visit. Lightfinder and 110dB WDR keep images clear across difficult lighting conditions, while Axis Edge Vault adds a hardware-based cybersecurity layer to protect device integrity. Note: audio features require the optional AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface via portcast technology.

Why This Model

  • Remote zoom and auto focus: The motorised varifocal lens can be adjusted remotely after installation, eliminating the need to revisit site to sharpen or reframe the field of view.
  • 110dB WDR with Lightfinder: Handles scenes with extreme contrast - entrances, windows, and mixed-light retail floors - without blowing out highlights or losing shadow detail.
  • HDMI output and deep learning analytics: The built-in HDMI port lets you push live video to a public display for deterrence, while on-device DLPU enables object analytics and loitering detection without a separate server.

AXIS M4216-LV 4MP Indoor Mini Dome Camera

$875.00 AUD
 per

Model: AXIS M4216-LV

Who This Is For

For integrators and facilities managers who need a low-profile indoor dome that can be tuned precisely to its environment after installation, the AXIS M4216-LV is built around that exact requirement. Its varifocal lens with remote zoom and autofocus means the field of view can be adjusted from the VMS or web interface without a technician returning to the ceiling - a practical advantage in retail, corporate offices, healthcare corridors, and childcare centres where access is disruptive. The 4MP sensor with Lightfinder and up to 110 dB WDR handles the mixed lighting common in these spaces, and the IK08-rated housing resists opportunistic tampering. A deep learning processing unit on board enables AXIS Object Analytics without offloading to a server, making this a strong choice for sites where loitering detection or forensic search is required alongside a clean, discreet ceiling profile.

What This Camera Actually Does

Remote Zoom and Autofocus

The varifocal lens can be zoomed and focused remotely after installation, so the coverage area can be refined from a laptop without anyone returning to the ceiling. Useful on retail floors and office environments where access timing is limited.

Lightfinder and 110 dB WDR

Lightfinder maintains colour imaging at very low light levels, while the wide dynamic range up to 110 dB prevents washout near windows or bright signage. Both features operate simultaneously, which matters in mixed-light retail and hospitality spaces.

On-Board Deep Learning Analytics

The built-in DLPU runs AXIS Object Analytics locally, including time-in-area detection for loitering scenarios. Processing happens on the camera itself, so analytic events trigger without dependency on a separate analytics server.

HDMI Output for Public Display

A built-in HDMI port outputs live video at 1080p directly to a monitor. Combined with AXIS Face Detector, this enables a live deterrence display at a store entrance or reception - visible to people entering the space without requiring a separate display encoder.

OptimizedIR Night Coverage

Built-in IR illumination with Axis OptimizedIR provides effective coverage in complete darkness. The IR intensity adapts to the zoom position to avoid overexposure at the centre of the frame as the lens is adjusted.

Axis Edge Vault Cybersecurity

Edge Vault provides hardware-based protection for the device identity and cryptographic keys. It simplifies authorisation on managed networks and is relevant for corporate or government sites with strict cybersecurity policies around network-connected devices.

Who Buys This Model

  • Retail loss prevention teams: The HDMI port combined with AXIS Face Detector enables a live deterrence monitor at store entry - a direct application for shops that want visible detection without a dedicated display server.
  • Corporate IT and facilities teams: Axis Edge Vault and ONVIF Profile compliance make this a manageable choice for multi-site corporate rollouts where cybersecurity policy governs device authorisation on the network.
  • Healthcare and childcare facility managers: The IK08-rated, repaintable housing allows the camera to match interior decor while maintaining resistance to incidental impact - relevant in spaces where aesthetics and hygiene standards both matter.
  • Integrators running Axis VMS environments: Remote zoom and autofocus via AXIS Camera Station or compatible VMS eliminates return site visits for lens tuning, which is a measurable labour saving on multi-camera installs.
  • Sites requiring loitering detection without a server: The on-board DLPU runs AXIS Object Analytics including time-in-area rules locally, which suits smaller sites that need intelligent alerts without investing in a dedicated analytics appliance.

Honest Assessment

The AXIS M4216-LV performs well where flexible post-installation tuning is a priority. The remote varifocal lens genuinely reduces return visits, the DLPU handles analytics locally without server dependency, and the HDMI output is a practical differentiator for deterrence display applications. The 4MP sensor with Lightfinder and 110 dB WDR handles challenging indoor lighting better than most cameras in this form factor. The IK08 rating provides meaningful tamper resistance for public-facing indoor locations. Where this camera will not serve as well: it carries no built-in speaker or microphone - audio requires the separately purchased AXIS T61 Series via portcast, which adds cost and planning. It is also an indoor-only camera and is not rated for exterior installation. Sites needing wide outdoor coverage, built-in audio without additional modules, or full-colour night imaging would be better served by a different product type available through Security Australia.

Before You Buy

Lens Tuning Note: Remote zoom and autofocus via the web interface or VMS works well, but the varifocal range is wide - confirm your intended coverage area and mounting height before finalising camera count. At wider zoom settings the IR illumination spreads accordingly, but at tighter zoom positions the effective IR distance increases. Run the remote focus tool after any lens adjustment to ensure the image is sharp at your chosen focal length.

Audio and I/O Planning: This camera has no built-in microphone or speaker. Two-way audio and physical I/O connections require the AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface series, connected via the camera's portcast technology. If audio or alarm input/output is part of your design, budget for and plan the T61 modules separately before installation commences.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are installing across a retail or office environment where lens tuning will happen post-handover and remote zoom/autofocus from the VMS saves a return site visit per camera.
  • Good match if: Your site requires loitering detection or forensic search analytics without a dedicated server, and the on-board DLPU running AXIS Object Analytics locally is sufficient for the alarm volume expected.
  • You may need a different model if: Your installation is outdoors, requires built-in two-way audio without additional modules, or demands full-colour night imaging - a TiOC-style outdoor turret or a camera with an integrated speaker and microphone would be a better fit for those requirements.

Real-World Scenarios

Retail Store Entry Deterrence

A fashion retailer connects the HDMI output to a monitor above the entrance. AXIS Face Detector runs on the camera's DLPU, and customers entering see themselves on the live display - a visible deterrence measure that requires no additional server hardware.

Office Corridor Monitoring

A corporate site installs 12 units across office corridors. The integrator tunes each varifocal lens remotely via the VMS after handover, adjusting coverage without revisiting each ceiling mount. Corridor Format rotation keeps the image correctly orientated in narrow passageways.

Loitering Alert in a Car Park Lobby

A building manager configures AXIS Object Analytics' time-in-area rule to trigger an alert when a person remains in the lift lobby beyond 90 seconds after hours. The alert fires locally on the camera without a third-party analytics licence.

Childcare Centre Installation

A childcare operator has the camera housing repainted to match room colour schemes. The IK08-rated dome resists incidental contact, and Lightfinder maintains colour imagery in rooms that transition from natural to artificial light throughout the day.

Mixed-Light Retail Floor

A supermarket with bright overhead lighting near refrigerator banks and darker produce sections deploys the M4216-LV. The 110 dB WDR prevents the camera from washing out bright areas while retaining detail in lower-light zones within the same frame.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Your project requires post-installation remote lens tuning, on-board deep learning analytics without a server, and a discreet IK08-rated ceiling profile with an HDMI output for deterrence display.
  • You may need a different model if: The installation is outdoors or requires integrated two-way audio without additional modules - an outdoor turret or a camera with a built-in speaker and microphone would cover those requirements more cleanly.
  • Pairs well with: An Axis-compatible NVR or VMS for remote lens management and centralised analytics review; AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface modules where audio or alarm I/O is required at this camera position.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera have a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way audio?

No. The AXIS M4216-LV has no built-in microphone or speaker. Two-way audio is available through portcast technology, but it requires a separately purchased AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface connected to the camera. If two-way audio is part of your design requirement, budget for the T61 module and plan the cable routing to it before installation.
  2. Will this camera work outdoors?

No. The AXIS M4216-LV is designed for indoor installation only and carries no IP weather rating for outdoor use. For covered eaves, external walls, or any location exposed to rain or moisture, a camera with an appropriate IP66 or IP67 rating would be the correct product type.
  3. Can the lens be adjusted remotely after the camera is mounted on the ceiling?

Yes. The varifocal lens supports remote zoom and autofocus via the camera's web interface or a compatible VMS. This means the field of view can be widened, narrowed, or refocused from a laptop after the physical installation is complete - no technician needs to return to the ceiling mount to make optical adjustments.
  4. What compression formats does this camera support and how does Zipstream affect storage?

The camera supports H.265 (Main and High profiles), H.264 (Main and High profiles), and Motion JPEG. Axis Zipstream operates within H.264 and H.265 streams and dynamically reduces the bitrate in areas of the frame with low activity, while preserving quality in regions where motion or detail is present. In practice, Zipstream can significantly reduce storage consumption compared to standard H.265 encoding at equivalent image quality settings - the actual saving depends on scene activity levels.
  5. Does the HDMI output work at the same time as the network stream?

Yes. The HDMI output operates independently of the network video stream. The camera can simultaneously deliver up to 1080p via HDMI to a local display and stream H.264 or H.265 video over the network to a VMS or NVR. The HDMI output runs at 1080p at 25/30 Hz or 720p at 50/60 Hz refresh rates.
  6. How does the remote zoom interact with the OptimizedIR illumination when the lens is adjusted?

Axis OptimizedIR automatically adjusts the IR illumination intensity and spread in response to the current zoom position. When the lens is set to a wider angle, the IR field widens to match the broader coverage area. When zoomed in to a tighter field of view, the IR narrows and intensifies to reach further without overexposing the centre of the frame. This means the IR performance remains appropriately matched to the optics regardless of where the varifocal lens is set - useful when final zoom positions are confirmed remotely post-installation. The AXIS M4216-LV is part of the Security Australia range and the technical specifications above reflect confirmed Axis documentation.
  7. What ONVIF profiles does this camera support, and does that affect which VMS I can use?

The camera is ONVIF Profile G, Profile M, Profile S, and Profile T compliant. Profile S covers basic video streaming and PTZ control. Profile G adds on-camera recording and playback. Profile T adds H.264/H.265 streaming and metadata. Profile M adds analytics metadata. This broad compliance means the camera can integrate with any VMS that supports these profiles, not only Axis software - though full feature access including remote lens control and AXIS Object Analytics events typically requires an Axis-native integration or VAPIX-based connection.
