Product Overview
Model: AXIS M3057-PLVE Mk II
Who This Is For
When reducing camera count without sacrificing coverage is the priority, the AXIS M3057-PLVE Mk II is the camera to evaluate. It is built for facilities managers, integrators, and security consultants specifying coverage for open-plan spaces - retail floors, airport concourses, hospital waiting rooms, hotel lobbies, and large office areas - where a single ceiling mount needs to do the work of multiple fixed cameras. The 6 MP fisheye sensor delivers a full 360-degree overview from one position, with simultaneous dewarped views including panorama, quad, corridor, and corner outputs streamed at the same time. The IP66 and IK10-rated housing means it also suits covered outdoor areas like undercover car parks and loading bays. If you are in the research phase comparing single-sensor panoramic options against multi-camera arrays, this model warrants a close look at what one install point can realistically deliver.
What This Camera Actually Does
360-Degree Fisheye Overview
The 1.56 mm F2.0 lens captures a full 183-degree horizontal and vertical field of view, producing a complete circular overview from a single ceiling mount. One camera covers an entire room floor plan with no blind corners along the perimeter, reducing cable runs, installation time, and ongoing licensing costs.
Simultaneous Dewarped Views
Panorama, double panorama, quad, corridor, corner left/right, and up to 4 individually cropped view areas can all be streamed at the same time. Operators get rectified, usable video without fish-eye distortion on every channel - no need to dewarp footage in post.
Low-Light Performance with IR
Axis Lightfinder technology and a minimum illumination of 0.16 lux in colour mode keep footage usable in dimly lit environments. Axis OptimizedIR provides built-in infrared illumination for 0 lux operation when all ambient light is gone, so coverage continues through the night.
Forensic WDR up to 120 dB
Forensic WDR handles scenes with strong contrast between bright and dark areas - entrances with direct sunlight, lobbies with floor-to-ceiling windows, or undercover car parks with open-air sections. Detail is maintained in both the highlights and shadows simultaneously, not just one or the other.
Zipstream Compression
Axis Zipstream runs on top of H.264 and H.265, dynamically reducing bitrate in low-activity areas of the frame while preserving detail where motion occurs. For a 6 MP stream running continuously, this has a real impact on NVR storage consumption and network bandwidth across a multi-camera system.
IP66 and IK10 Rated Housing
IP66 means the dome is fully protected against dust ingress and strong water jets, suitable for covered outdoor areas. IK10 is the highest standard impact rating, meaning the dome resists deliberate strikes. Both ratings are confirmed for this model, not marketing language.
Who Buys This Model
- Retail Loss Prevention Teams: Specifying overhead coverage for shop floors where a single ceiling mount in the centre of the space needs to watch all aisles simultaneously using the quad or panorama dewarped view.
- Healthcare and Aged Care Facilities: Covering large waiting rooms, common areas, and corridors where discrete ceiling installation is required and multiple camera positions are not practical or desirable.
- Integrators Working on Covered Car Parks: Deploying panoramic coverage across undercover bays where the IP66 and IK10 housing handles the environment and one camera position replaces 3 or 4 fixed cameras.
- Education Administrators and Facilities Teams: Monitoring school gymnasiums, dining halls, or large common areas where budget limits the number of camera licence slots but full-room coverage is still required.
- Airport and Transport Hub Security Teams: Installing at baggage claim areas, concourses, or waiting lounges where the corridor and corner dewarped views provide structured coverage of passenger flow from a single ceiling point.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS M3057-PLVE Mk II does two things well: it genuinely replaces multiple fixed camera positions in open-plan spaces, and it delivers that coverage at 6 MP with simultaneous dewarped streams that are immediately usable by operators. The IK10 housing and IP66 rating are confirmed, so it is not limited to clean indoor environments. Forensic WDR up to 120 dB and Lightfinder technology mean it handles mixed and low-light scenes without separate IR cameras. Zipstream in H.264 and H.265 keeps storage manageable for a high-resolution continuous stream. Where it will not serve: if your application requires identification-grade detail at range - for example, reading faces or licence plates at a distance - a dedicated fixed camera or PTZ aimed at that specific point will outperform any fisheye. This camera also sits at a higher price point than a standard fixed dome; the value is realised when it replaces 3 or more camera positions. Available through Security Australia with full Axis manufacturer backing.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: When streaming multiple dewarped view areas simultaneously at maximum resolution, frame rate drops to up to 19 fps per stream. Plan your VMS channel allocation and NVR processing budget accordingly - a single AXIS M3057-PLVE Mk II can present as 5 or more logical video streams to the recorder. Confirm your NVR and VMS licence model supports multi-stream fisheye input before deployment. Standard IEEE 802.3af PoE is sufficient; no PoE+ switch is required.
Mounting Height: Fisheye coverage area is directly tied to ceiling height. Lower mounting heights (under 3 m) produce tighter coverage radius with better pixel density per subject; higher mounts (5 m+) expand the coverage footprint but reduce detail on individuals. Plan mounting position based on the specific room dimensions and your identification or detection requirements before committing to ceiling penetration locations.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are covering a large open-plan area from a single ceiling mount and need simultaneous panorama, quad, and corridor dewarped streams delivered to your VMS without post-processing.
- Good match if: Your installation environment is a covered outdoor area or a space subject to deliberate tampering - the IK10 rating and IP66 housing are confirmed and appropriate for those conditions.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is identification-grade detail at distance - for example, reading faces at an entry point or capturing licence plates on a driveway approach. A fixed varifocal camera or a dedicated PTZ model would be more suitable for that specific task.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need full-room or full-area situational awareness from a single ceiling mount, with simultaneous dewarped views delivered to your VMS and a housing rated for outdoor or impact-prone environments.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is identification-grade detail at a specific point - a fixed varifocal dome or a motorised PTZ camera aimed at that location will deliver higher pixel density on target at range than any single-sensor fisheye can.
- Pairs well with: Fixed varifocal dome cameras positioned at entry and exit points to complement the wide overview coverage of this panoramic unit - a common design in retail and hospitality installs.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera require PoE+ or will a standard PoE switch work?
Standard IEEE 802.3af PoE is sufficient - no PoE+ switch is required. The AXIS M3057-PLVE Mk II draws within the Class 3 power budget of standard 802.3af, which means you can connect it directly to any standard managed or unmanaged PoE switch without needing to upgrade your switching infrastructure. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data. -
Will this camera work for outdoor installation, or is it indoor only?
Yes, it is rated for outdoor use. The IP66 rating confirms full protection against dust and water jets, and the IK10 rating is the highest impact resistance classification. It is suitable for covered outdoor areas including undercover car parks, covered walkways, and protected building eaves. It is not designed for direct exposure to sustained rain driving against the lens dome. -
How many video streams does one camera send to the NVR or VMS?
Up to 5 simultaneous streams from a single camera. The AXIS M3057-PLVE Mk II can output the 360-degree overview plus up to 4 individually dewarped view areas at the same time. Each stream is independently configurable in resolution, frame rate, and compression. Your VMS licence and NVR processing capacity need to account for up to 5 logical channels per physical camera unit - this is a critical planning step before deployment. -
Does this camera produce a fisheye circle on-screen or does it automatically dewarp the image?
Both outputs are available simultaneously. The raw 360-degree circular fisheye overview is one stream option, while dewarped views including panorama, quad, corridor, and corner left/right are processed and delivered as rectified, distortion-corrected video. Dewarping is performed in-camera on the ARTPEC-7 processor - the VMS receives an already corrected stream and does not need to handle dewarping itself, which reduces the processing load on the recording server. -
What frame rate should I plan for when running all dewarped views at full resolution?
Plan for up to 19 fps per stream in that configuration. When streaming 4 individually dewarped view areas plus the full 360-degree overview simultaneously at maximum resolution, the confirmed frame rate is up to 19 fps per stream. If WDR is enabled with dewarped views but fewer simultaneous streams, the camera delivers up to 25/30 fps. The 50/60 fps maximum applies only to the 360-degree overview stream without WDR enabled - this is not achievable when running multiple simultaneous dewarped outputs. -
How does Forensic WDR differ from standard WDR, and does it affect frame rate?
Yes, enabling WDR does affect frame rate. Axis Forensic WDR operates at up to 120 dB depending on scene content - it processes multiple exposure values per frame to retain shadow and highlight detail simultaneously, which is a more processing-intensive operation than standard single-exposure WDR. The practical impact is that frame rate with WDR active across dewarped views is up to 25/30 fps rather than the higher rates achievable without WDR. For most surveillance applications where you are not recording fast-moving sport, 25 fps is sufficient. Security Australia stocks this model as part of the Axis network camera range. -
Does this camera support people counting analytics, and how is the data accessed?
Yes, built-in people counting is confirmed for this model. The analytics run on the ARTPEC-7 processor inside the camera. Data is accessible through the camera's web interface and can be integrated with compatible VMS platforms or Axis' own analytics software. People counting is separate from motion detection - both are available simultaneously. The people counting function is suited to retail occupancy tracking and facility management applications where entry and exit data is needed alongside security recording.
