Product Overview

Model: AXIS M3057-PLR

Who This Is For

For transport operators and fleet integrators who need verified compliance and genuine 360° coverage in a single onboard camera, the AXIS M3057-PLR Mk II is purpose-built for the task. Rail and bus operators face a specific challenge: a single vehicle interior must be covered comprehensively, cabling must tolerate constant vibration, and the camera housing must meet fire and electrical standards that general-purpose surveillance cameras simply do not satisfy. The M3057-PLR Mk II addresses all three - it carries EN50155 and EN45545-2 certification for rail and transit environments, uses an M12 connector rated for vibration, and delivers a full 360° panoramic view from one camera position. It is also suited to fixed-site applications such as lobbies, concourses, and open-plan areas where ceiling placement and single-camera wide-area coverage are the priority.

What This Camera Actually Does

360° Single-Camera Coverage

The 1.56 mm fisheye lens captures a full 183° horizontal and vertical field of view. One ceiling-mounted unit covers an entire vehicle interior or open room, removing the blind spots and additional camera positions that conventional wide-angle cameras require.

Flexible Dewarped Stream Views

The camera outputs panorama, quad, corner, and corridor views directly without external dewarping software. Up to 4 areas can be digitally panned, tilted, and zoomed simultaneously, giving operators useful viewing angles from a single physical installation point.

Low-Light and IR Performance

Axis Lightfinder retains colour image quality down to 0.16 lux. The automatic IR-cut filter switches to black-and-white at 0.03 lux, and OptimizedIR illumination extends coverage to 0 lux - useful in poorly lit vehicle interiors or after-hours building spaces.

Transport-Grade Build and Certification

EN50155 and EN45545-2 compliance, an M12 vibration-rated connector, IK10 impact resistance, and IP66/67 ingress protection make this camera one of the few dome units that can legally and practically be specified for rail and bus onboard fitout.

Bandwidth-Efficient Recording

Axis Zipstream reduces bitrate on both H.264 and H.265 streams by lowering data in low-activity areas of the frame while preserving detail where motion occurs. This is practical for onboard systems with limited cellular uplink capacity or constrained onboard storage.

Hardware-Level Cybersecurity

Axis Edge Vault stores a unique device identity in a secure element. Signed firmware and secure boot prevent unauthorised firmware from running, and a factory reset guarantees a clean state free of any persistence - relevant where cameras connect to operational technology networks on public transport.

Who Buys This Model

  • Rail and Bus Operators: The EN50155 and EN45545-2 ratings plus M12 connector make this one of very few cameras that satisfy transit authority compliance requirements for onboard passenger monitoring without custom adaptation.
  • Fleet Systems Integrators: Installers managing multi-vehicle rollouts benefit from Zipstream's bandwidth savings over cellular connections and from microSD edge storage as a fallback when network links drop between stops.
  • Facility Managers Covering Large Open Interiors: Airports, concourses, waiting rooms, and open-plan offices where one ceiling camera position must cover the full floor area - eliminating multiple camera runs and reducing NVR channel use.
  • Security Consultants Specifying Forensic Review Systems: The 6 MP sensor combined with simultaneous multi-region digital PTZ means post-incident review can re-examine any part of the recorded 360° scene in detail, which is a common requirement in transit incident investigations.

Honest Assessment

The M3057-PLR Mk II does two things particularly well: it consolidates wide-area coverage into a single camera position using on-camera dewarping, and it is one of a small number of dome cameras that meets the electrical and mechanical standards required for genuine onboard transit installation. The Forensic WDR and Lightfinder combination handles the mixed-lighting conditions typical of vehicle interiors - bright windows against shadowed seating areas - without requiring manual scene configuration. Axis Edge Vault cybersecurity is a tangible differentiator for operators connecting cameras to operational networks.

Where it will not deliver: this is a fixed-lens fisheye, so there is no optical zoom - digital zoom into a region of a 6 MP frame will not match the detail of a dedicated telephoto or PTZ unit covering the same distance. For perimeter monitoring of extended outdoor areas, a long-range IR bullet or motorised-zoom PTZ camera from the Security Australia range will be a more appropriate fit.

Before You Buy

Installer Note - M12 Connector and PoE Supply: The M3057-PLR Mk II uses an M12 connector rather than a standard RJ45 port. Ensure your onboard cabling harness or junction box accommodates M12 termination. For fixed-site installations, an M12-to-RJ45 adapter will be required between the camera and your PoE switch - confirm your switch provides sufficient PoE budget per port before ordering, as the ARTPEC-7 platform under full load with IR active draws more than a minimal-spec PoE allocation.

Dewarping Software Compatibility: On-camera dewarping of panorama, quad, corner, and corridor views is handled by the camera itself, but if your VMS or NVR relies on client-side dewarping, verify that the Axis VAPIX stream from this camera is supported by your specific platform before deployment. Most major ONVIF-compliant systems handle it natively, but onboard DVRs with limited processing headroom may present the raw fisheye stream only.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are specifying cameras for a rail or bus fleet and need EN50155/EN45545-2 certification with a vibration-rated M12 connector - this camera is built specifically for that environment.
  • Good match if: You are covering a single large interior space such as a lobby or open-plan floor and want to minimise camera count - one ceiling-mounted unit with 360° coverage and on-camera dewarped streams eliminates multiple wide-angle positions.
  • You may need a different model if: Your priority is long-range outdoor perimeter coverage with optical zoom - a motorised PTZ or long-range IR bullet camera will serve that application better than a fixed fisheye dome.

Real-World Scenarios

Passenger Rail Carriage

Mounted centrally in a train carriage ceiling, the M3057-PLR Mk II uses its 360° fisheye and M12 connector to cover the full passenger area through constant vibration. EN50155 compliance satisfies rail authority procurement requirements without an exemption process.

City Bus Interior

Installed above the centre aisle of a bus, 1 camera replaces 2-3 conventional cameras that would otherwise be needed to eliminate blind spots around seating rows. Zipstream reduces the cellular data load for live stream transmission to depot.

Airport or Station Concourse

Ceiling-mounted at a high-traffic junction, the 360° view provides full situational awareness across a wide open space. The operator can call up quad or corridor dewarped views during an incident without any additional software running on the monitoring workstation.

Open-Plan Office After Hours

When lights drop to minimum overnight, Lightfinder retains colour images at 0.16 lux - enough for most emergency lighting levels. If illumination falls further, the IR-cut filter switches automatically and OptimizedIR takes over without any manual intervention.

Post-Incident Forensic Review

Because the full 360° scene is recorded at 6 MP, investigators can digitally pan and zoom into any area of the stored footage after the fact. This is consistently useful in transit incident investigations where the exact location of a subject within the frame is disputed.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need certified onboard transit compliance (EN50155/EN45545-2) with a vibration-rated connector and full 360° coverage from a single camera position.
  • You may need a different model if: Your application is long-range outdoor perimeter coverage - a motorised PTZ or optical-zoom bullet camera from the panoramic and PTZ range will provide the identification distances this fixed fisheye lens cannot match.
  • Pairs well with: A compatible ONVIF network video recorder with sufficient channel capacity and microSD-aware edge recording support, or an onboard mobile DVR designed for transit installations.

Common Questions

  1. Does the AXIS M3057-PLR Mk II meet the EN50155 standard required for rail installations?

Yes. The camera is certified to EN50155, the international standard for railway electronic equipment, and also carries EN45545-2 certification for fire protection on railway vehicles. The M12 connector provides the vibration-resistant termination that rail installations require. These certifications are confirmed in the product specification - not achieved through optional accessories or modifications.
  2. Will this camera work with a standard RJ45 PoE switch?

Not directly. The M3057-PLR Mk II uses an M12 connector rather than a standard RJ45 port. For fixed-site installations connected to a conventional PoE switch, you will need an M12-to-RJ45 adapter. For transit installations, the M12 connector interfaces with purpose-built onboard cabling harnesses. The camera draws power via PoE once the physical connector is resolved.
  3. What dewarped view modes does the camera produce and does it require external software?

No external dewarping software is required. The ARTPEC-7 processor handles dewarping on the camera itself, outputting panorama, quad, corner, and corridor views as discrete streams. Up to 4 regions can be digitally panned, tilted, and zoomed simultaneously. This means a compatible VMS or NVR simply receives a conventional video stream - it does not need to perform any fisheye correction locally, which reduces server processing load and broadens compatible recorder options.
  4. How does Axis Zipstream affect recording quality on this camera?

Zipstream does not reduce quality uniformly. It works by analysing each frame and lowering the bitrate in static, low-detail areas while maintaining full data allocation where motion or high-detail content is detected. On the M3057-PLR Mk II, this operates across both H.264 and H.265 streams. The practical result is smaller file sizes on microSD edge storage and lower bandwidth demand over cellular uplinks - without discarding detail in the areas that matter for investigation.
  5. Does this camera support two-way audio?

No. The M3057-PLR Mk II has a built-in microphone for audio monitoring and recording, but there is no built-in speaker. Audio announcements or challenge capability would require a separate speaker connected through an audio output on a compatible recorder or controller.
  6. What identification distances should I expect from the 6 MP fisheye sensor?

Identification distance depends on the dewarped view and the portion of the 6 MP frame being examined. Because the full 360° scene is captured across one sensor, zooming into a sub-region digitally reduces effective resolution in that area. At the distances typical of vehicle interiors or small-to-medium lobbies - generally under 8 metres - the 6 MP fisheye provides workable facial identification in a dewarped view. At longer distances or in large open spaces, a dedicated optical-zoom camera will produce substantially higher pixel density on a subject. Security Australia stocks PTZ and long-range dome cameras suited to those longer identification requirements.
  7. What does Axis Edge Vault actually protect and why does it matter for transit networks?

Axis Edge Vault is a hardware-based secure element that stores a unique, cryptographically verifiable device identity for the camera. In practice it means the camera can prove it is a genuine, unmodified Axis device when authenticating on a network - preventing spoofing by a substituted unit. Combined with signed firmware and secure boot, the camera will only run firmware that has been cryptographically authorised by Axis, and a factory reset is guaranteed to produce a clean state with no persistent malware. For transit operators connecting cameras to networks that also carry operational data, this is a substantive security control, not just a marketing checkbox.
