Product Overview
Model: AXIS M1135-E Mk II
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying outdoor camera positions where lens choice is a genuine operational requirement will find the AXIS M1135-E Mk II a practical fit. Box cameras suit sites where a fixed focal length is not adequate - think entry points with variable detection distances, loading docks that need a narrow field of view, or gated approaches where licence plate capture demands a specific lens angle. The M1135-E Mk II delivers 2MP resolution in a weatherproof outdoor housing rated to IP66 and IK10, with Lightfinder 2.0 technology for low-light performance and AXIS Object Analytics onboard for classification-based detection. Because the lens is purchased separately, integrators can match the optic precisely to the job rather than working around whatever focal length ships in the box. This suits professional installations managed by experienced integrators rather than plug-and-play consumer setups.
What This Camera Actually Does
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Imaging
Axis Lightfinder 2.0 is designed to maintain usable colour detail in near-dark conditions. Rather than switching to black-and-white, the camera preserves colour at low lux levels, which helps identify clothing, vehicles, and signage in poorly lit outdoor environments without relying on additional lighting.
WDR - Forensic Capture
Wide Dynamic Range - Forensic Capture manages scenes with bright and dark areas simultaneously - such as a gate entrance lit by sun behind the subject. The camera balances exposure so both the subject and the background remain legible, reducing washed-out or underexposed zones that standard cameras produce in those conditions.
Interchangeable C/CS-Mount Lens
No lens is included in the box. This is intentional. Integrators select a C or CS-mount lens matched to the actual detection distance and field of view the site requires - whether that is a wide-angle entrance view or a narrow telephoto lane. It prevents the compromises that come with fixed-lens cameras on complex sites.
AXIS Object Analytics
Onboard AI-based analytics classifies detected objects as humans or vehicles before triggering an alert. This reduces false alarms from wind-blown foliage, animals, and lighting changes that trip standard motion detection. Scenarios and rules are configured through the Axis camera interface without requiring a separate analytics server.
Axis Zipstream Compression
Zipstream reduces bandwidth and storage consumption by dynamically lowering bitrate in areas of low activity while retaining full detail in regions of interest. Over a network with multiple cameras, the cumulative saving on NVR storage and switch load is measurable, particularly on sites running continuous 24-hour recording.
IP66 and IK10 Outdoor Housing
The M1135-E Mk II is rated IP66 for dust and water ingress and IK10 for impact resistance. The NEMA 4X rating adds corrosion resistance relevant to coastal and industrial chemical environments. The housing handles an operating temperature range of -40°C to 50°C, covering most Australian outdoor extremes without additional enclosure work.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Industrial Sites: Sites with long approaches, gate lanes, or specific detection distances benefit from a camera where the lens is chosen to match the geometry rather than a generic bundled optic.
- Installers in Coastal or Harsh Environments: The NEMA 4X and IP66 rating, combined with the -40°C to 50°C operating range, makes this a fit for exposed outdoor positions at ports, mine sites, or coastal commercial properties where standard cameras degrade prematurely.
- VMS-Driven Installations: Organisations running AXIS Camera Station or third-party VMS platforms that support Axis ACAP applications get direct access to AXIS Object Analytics and onboard event rules without additional licensing cost per camera.
- Licence Plate and Traffic Monitoring Applications: The combination of a selectable narrow lens, WDR - Forensic Capture, and 2MP resolution makes this a common choice for vehicle entry lane monitoring where a fixed-lens turret or dome would not provide the required depth of field control.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS M1135-E Mk II performs well where lens flexibility is the defining installation requirement. Lightfinder 2.0 and WDR - Forensic Capture work together effectively on outdoor positions with difficult lighting, and IK10/IP66/NEMA 4X protection genuinely extends deployment options in harsh environments. AXIS Object Analytics running onboard removes the need for server-side analytics licences on smaller deployments, and Zipstream compression keeps storage and bandwidth overhead manageable across multi-camera systems. What this camera will not do is function out of the box without a separately purchased C or CS-mount lens - that step is mandatory and adds to the total cost. It also does not include built-in IR illumination, so night-time performance is dependent entirely on scene lighting or a separately installed IR illuminator. Buyers looking for a self-contained camera with onboard IR and a fixed lens will find a turret or bullet camera from the range available through Security Australia to be a more straightforward fit.
Before You Buy
Lens Not Included: The M1135-E Mk II ships without a lens. You must purchase a compatible C or CS-mount lens separately before the camera can be commissioned. Before ordering, confirm the required field of view and detection distance so the correct focal length is selected - a 12mm lens for a 20-metre gate lane behaves very differently from a 4mm lens on the same mount. Factor this into your total project cost and delivery timeline.
No Built-In IR Illumination: This camera does not include onboard infrared LEDs. Night-time image quality depends on available ambient light or a separately installed IR or white-light illuminator aimed at the scene. If the installation position has no useful light source after dark, plan for a compatible illuminator in the same scope of works.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing on a vehicle entry lane, gate, or long approach where a specific focal length is needed to achieve the right field of view and the integrator will select the lens to match the geometry.
- Good match if: The site is in a coastal, corrosive, or extreme-temperature environment where NEMA 4X, IP66, and IK10 ratings are a specified requirement rather than just a preference.
- You may need a different model if: You need a self-contained camera with onboard IR illumination and a fixed lens for a standard eave or soffit position - a bullet or turret camera with built-in IR will be faster to deploy and lower in total cost for that application.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need to specify the exact lens focal length for a defined detection distance and cannot achieve that with a fixed-lens camera, particularly on vehicle lanes, gate approaches, or long-range outdoor positions.
- You may need a different model if: The installation is a standard eave or soffit position that needs built-in IR and does not require lens selection - a fixed-lens outdoor turret or bullet camera will be quicker to deploy and lower in total cost for that scenario.
- Pairs well with: A dedicated outdoor IR or white-light illuminator aligned to the camera's field of view, a PoE switch with sufficient port power, and a rackmount NVR with AXIS Camera Station or an ONVIF-compatible VMS for event management and recording.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera come with a lens included?
No. The AXIS M1135-E Mk II is supplied without a lens. The camera body has a C/CS-mount, meaning you purchase a compatible C or CS-mount lens separately based on the focal length your installation requires. This is standard for professional box cameras and is the feature that makes the format useful - the lens is matched to the site geometry, not the other way around. Factor the lens cost and selection into your project before ordering. -
Does this camera have built-in IR for night vision?
No. There is no onboard infrared illumination in the M1135-E Mk II. Night-time image quality depends entirely on the ambient lighting at the installation position or a separately installed IR or white-light illuminator. If the site has no useful lighting after dark, an external illuminator matched to the lens field of view is a required part of the installation scope. Lightfinder 2.0 helps in low-light conditions with some ambient light, but it does not replace illumination in complete darkness. -
Will this camera work on a standard PoE switch port?
Yes. The M1135-E Mk II is powered by IEEE 802.3af PoE, which is the standard 15.4W PoE supported by virtually all managed and unmanaged PoE switches. You do not need a PoE+ port. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data, which simplifies the installation at exposed outdoor positions where running separate power cabling is impractical. -
What does AXIS Object Analytics actually do on this camera, and does it cost extra?
AXIS Object Analytics is included at no additional licence cost and runs directly on the ARTPEC-7 processor inside the camera. It classifies detected motion as either a human or a vehicle before triggering an alert, which filters out the false alarms generated by standard pixel-based motion detection from wind, light changes, and small animals. Rules and detection zones are configured in the camera's web interface. No separate analytics server is required for basic human and vehicle classification. -
Is the M1135-E Mk II suitable for use in coastal or chemically exposed environments?
Yes. The camera carries a NEMA 4X rating alongside its IP66 ingress protection. NEMA 4X specifically addresses corrosion resistance, making it relevant for salt air environments at ports, wharves, and coastal industrial sites, as well as locations exposed to cleaning chemicals or fertilisers. The IK10 impact rating is also confirmed. Together these ratings extend the camera's service life in conditions that degrade standard outdoor camera housings significantly faster. The M1135-E Mk II is part of the Security Australia range and is suited to these demanding site types. -
Does this camera support local recording without an NVR?
Yes. The M1135-E Mk II includes a microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC card slot supporting cards up to 256 GB. This allows continuous or event-triggered recording directly on the camera, which is useful for remote installations with unreliable network connectivity or as a backup recording path alongside an NVR. A card is not included and must be purchased separately. AXIS Camera Station can manage edge storage alongside centralised recording. -
Will this camera integrate with third-party VMS platforms?
Yes. The M1135-E Mk II supports ONVIF Profile S, Profile G, and Profile T, which covers live streaming, recording management, and metadata including motion events and analytics. Most enterprise and commercial VMS platforms - including Milestone, Genetec, Hanwha Wisenet Wave, and others - support ONVIF Profile T integration. Full AXIS Object Analytics event data is accessible natively in AXIS Camera Station; availability in third-party VMS platforms depends on whether the manufacturer supports Axis ACAP metadata in their driver.
