Product Overview
Model: AXIS-02331-001
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying cameras for lobbies, corridors, retail floors, or commercial interiors where low-light performance and deep learning analytics need to work together in a single ceiling-mount unit will find the Axis P3268-LV worth serious consideration. This is an 8MP indoor dome camera built around the ARTPEC-8 system-on-chip, which includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit for on-camera object classification - no separate analytics server required. The varifocal 4.3-8.6mm lens with remote zoom and auto focus means installers can dial in the field of view from the NVR interface rather than repositioning on a ladder. With Lightfinder 2.0 pushing colour sensitivity down to 0.14 lux and OptimizedIR covering up to 40 metres, this camera is built for large, mixed-light interior spaces where both colour retention at dusk and IR performance in complete darkness actually matter.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP 4K Resolution with Forensic WDR
The 3840x2160 sensor captures enough detail to digitally zoom into footage post-incident without losing identifiable information. Forensic WDR handles up to 120dB of dynamic range, keeping both a bright exit sign and a shadowed face usable in the same frame.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Colour
Rated to 0.14 lux for colour imaging, this camera holds usable colour in conditions where most dome cameras switch to greyscale. In corridors with emergency lighting only or dimly lit reception areas, the colour image is retained far longer into darkness than standard sensors allow.
Remote Varifocal Lens Adjustment
The 4.3-8.6mm motorised varifocal lens supports remote zoom and auto focus from the management interface. Installers can mount the dome, cable it up, then adjust horizontal field of view between 100 and 53 degrees without returning to the ceiling - a meaningful time-saver on high or inaccessible mounting points.
On-Camera Deep Learning Analytics
The ARTPEC-8 SoC includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit. AXIS Object Analytics runs directly on the camera to detect and classify humans, vehicles, and vehicle types. This means analytics alerts do not depend on VMS server processing power - the camera itself handles classification at the edge.
OptimizedIR Night Coverage to 40m
Built-in IR illumination reaches up to 40 metres in complete darkness. The IR output adjusts automatically to the lens zoom position so the illumination pattern stays matched to the field of view, reducing the hotspot effect common in fixed-IR domes at telephoto zoom settings.
Axis Zipstream Bandwidth Reduction
Zipstream dynamically reduces bitrate in low-activity areas of the scene while preserving full detail on moving subjects. For an 8MP stream running continuously, this directly reduces both network load and storage consumption - particularly relevant when multiple 4K cameras share the same NVR or network segment.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial Building Managers: Specifying ceiling cameras for lobbies, lift lobbies, and common areas where 4K detail and clean aesthetics both matter - the dome profile sits flush and draws minimal attention while delivering forensic-grade resolution.
- Retail Security Integrators: Installing cameras over sales floors or stockrooms with mixed and variable lighting - Forensic WDR at up to 120dB handles the contrast between bright display lighting and darker storage areas without blowing out either zone.
- Corporate IT and Security Teams: Deploying analytics-capable cameras without investing in additional server-side processing infrastructure - AXIS Object Analytics and ACAP v4 application support run on the camera's own DLPU, not the VMS server.
- Healthcare and Education Facility Managers: Requiring IK10-rated dome cameras in corridors and common zones where accidental or deliberate impact is a realistic risk - the vandal-resistant housing protects against mechanical impact without looking institutional.
- Systems Integrators on High-Security Projects: Needing edge storage fallback and built-in cybersecurity features including Axis Edge Vault device identity protection - relevant for installations where network continuity and device authentication are part of the security specification.
Honest Assessment
The P3268-LV delivers genuinely strong performance in the areas that matter for demanding indoor installations. The combination of 8MP resolution, Lightfinder 2.0 at 0.14 lux, and Forensic WDR at up to 120dB is not a marketing stack - these are complementary capabilities that work together in the kind of mixed-light commercial interiors where cheaper cameras produce either blown-out bright zones or unusable shadow detail. The ARTPEC-8 DLPU and AXIS Object Analytics mean the camera genuinely classifies humans and vehicles on-camera, not just flags motion. The remote varifocal lens is a real installation convenience at height. Where this camera is not the right choice: if the requirement is outdoor perimeter coverage with a weatherproof housing, a different camera type with IP66 or IP67 rating is the appropriate specification. This is an indoor-rated product. For wide-area coverage from a single mounting point, a panoramic or multi-sensor camera available through Security Australia may deliver better return per installation position.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The P3268-LV requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+ (not standard 802.3af) to operate at full capacity with IR active - confirm your switch or injector supports PoE+ before quoting. The varifocal remote zoom and focus is genuinely useful, but the camera requires initial physical alignment of pan (+-190 degrees), tilt (-10 to +80 degrees), and rotation (+-190 degrees) at the ceiling before software configuration begins - plan for a brief physical access step even though optical fine-tuning is remote.
Analytics Setup Note: AXIS Object Analytics is supported but must be configured after installation - detection zones, object class filters, and trigger conditions are set through the camera's web interface or AXIS Device Manager. Budget time for analytics configuration as a separate commissioning step, especially on multi-camera deployments where zone logic differs between camera positions.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing in a large indoor space - a warehouse interior, shopping centre corridor, or corporate atrium - where 40m IR reach and 8MP resolution are both needed from a single ceiling position.
- Good match if: Your VMS or NVR infrastructure cannot support server-side analytics and you need human and vehicle classification handled at the edge by the camera itself via the ARTPEC-8 DLPU.
- You may need a different model if: The installation is outdoor or in a covered external area exposed to rain and dust - this product is indoor-rated and a weatherproof turret, bullet, or outdoor dome with IP66/67 rating would be the appropriate product type for external mounting.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need 8MP 4K resolution with on-camera deep learning analytics and a motorised varifocal lens in a single IK10-rated indoor dome - particularly where low-light colour performance is a primary specification requirement.
- You may need a different model if: The mounting position is external or in a covered outdoor area exposed to weather - a weatherproof outdoor dome or turret with IP66 or IP67 rating is the correct product type for those installations.
- Pairs well with: An Axis-compatible NVR or VMS with ACAP application support, PoE+ managed switch infrastructure, and a centralised AXIS Device Manager deployment for multi-camera analytics configuration.
Common Questions
-
Does the P3268-LV work with a standard PoE switch?
No - this camera requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+ (Class 4, up to 30W), not standard 802.3af PoE. Standard 802.3af switches supply a maximum of 15.4W, which is insufficient for this camera with IR active. Confirm your switch, NVR with built-in PoE, or injector supports 802.3at before installation. Most enterprise-grade managed switches support PoE+, but entry-level 8-port unmanaged PoE switches often do not. -
Will this camera classify humans and vehicles without a separate analytics server or VMS licence?
Yes. AXIS Object Analytics runs on the camera's own ARTPEC-8 deep learning processing unit - classification of humans, vehicles, and vehicle types is handled at the edge with no dependency on VMS server processing or a separate analytics licence. The camera uses its 2048MB RAM and dedicated DLPU to run the classification models locally. ACAP v4 support also allows third-party deep learning applications to be installed directly on the camera. -
What does the varifocal lens actually allow me to do remotely?
Remote zoom adjusts the focal length between 4.3mm and 8.6mm, changing horizontal field of view from 100 to 53 degrees. Remote auto focus then refocuses the lens at the new zoom position automatically. Both adjustments are made through the camera's web interface or AXIS Device Manager after physical mounting - you can change coverage angle without accessing the ceiling or removing the dome cover. Initial physical pan, tilt, and rotation still requires hands-on adjustment at install time. -
How does Forensic WDR differ from standard WDR on this camera?
Forensic WDR on the P3268-LV handles up to 120dB of dynamic range and is specifically tuned to preserve forensic detail - it prioritises maintaining recognisable facial features and clothing detail in both bright and dark zones simultaneously, rather than simply averaging exposure across the scene. Standard WDR in lower-tier cameras typically handles 60-90dB and can produce motion artefacts on moving subjects. The Forensic WDR implementation on this camera is designed for evidentiary use, not just visual comfort. -
Does the camera record locally if the network goes down?
Yes. The P3268-LV includes edge storage support, allowing video to be recorded directly to a memory card installed in the camera if the network or NVR connection is interrupted. This prevents gaps in the recorded timeline during network faults or NVR maintenance. The camera's 8192MB of onboard flash is separate from removable edge storage - check the Axis product datasheet for supported SD card specifications when planning fallback recording capacity. -
What is the IK10 rating and does it apply to both the dome cover and the housing?
IK10 is the highest rating in the IEC 62262 vandal resistance scale, indicating the camera can withstand an impact equivalent to 20 joules - roughly the force of a 5kg weight dropped from 40cm. On the P3268-LV this rating applies to the dome assembly, meaning the dome cover itself resists cracking or shattering under that impact. This is relevant in corridors, lift lobbies, or environments where equipment impacts, deliberate tampering, or accidental contact from trolleys or machinery are realistic risks. Security Australia stocks this model specifically for those demanding indoor applications. -
How does the digital PTZ on this camera work, and is it the same as a motorised PTZ camera?
No - these are different capabilities. The P3268-LV's digital PTZ uses the 8MP sensor resolution to crop and digitally zoom into sub-regions of the full frame in software, without any physical motor movement. The camera supports up to 2 individually cropped view areas at full frame rate alongside the main stream. This is useful for monitoring 2 specific zones within a wide field of view simultaneously, but it does not provide 360-degree pan travel or continuous optical zoom tracking. A motorised PTZ camera with a physical pan/tilt mechanism is a different product type suited to active operator-controlled tracking of moving subjects across large areas. -
Does the P3268-LV support two-way audio?
Not as a standalone unit. The camera includes an audio input and I/O connectivity for integrating peripheral equipment such as a separate external microphone, but it does not have a built-in speaker. Two-way audio requires both a built-in microphone and a built-in speaker in the same unit. If two-way audio communication is a requirement for the installation, a camera model with both components built in is the appropriate specification.
