Product Overview
Model: AXIS P3265-V
Who This Is For
When deep learning analytics at the edge is the priority - not just motion detection - the AXIS P3265-V is the camera specifiers reach for. Built around Axis's ARTPEC-8 system-on-chip with a dedicated deep learning processing unit, it classifies humans, vehicles, and vehicle types directly on the device without depending on server-side processing. That matters in corporate offices, government facilities, educational campuses, and retail environments where reducing false alarms and generating actionable event data is as important as the video itself. The 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens with remote zoom and autofocus means installers can dial in the field of view from the software interface after the camera is in position - useful on high ceilings or where scissor lift access is limited to a single visit. The IK10-rated dome housing suits environments where the camera may be subject to accidental or deliberate impact.
What This Camera Actually Does
Deep Learning Object Analytics
AXIS Object Analytics runs on the ARTPEC-8 DLPU to classify humans, vehicles, and vehicle types on the camera itself. Alerts are tied to what actually entered a zone, not pixel changes - so operators receive events that need attention rather than wading through wind-triggered false alarms.
Motorised Varifocal Lens - Remote Adjust
The 3.4-8.9mm varifocal lens adjusts zoom and focuses automatically via software after mounting. There is no need to physically access the camera to fine-tune the field of view, which saves time on high ceilings and reduces the need for a return visit during commissioning.
Forensic WDR up to 120 dB
Forensic WDR handles high-contrast scenes - lobbies with large glass frontages, corridors with skylights, or rooms where windows and shaded areas sit in the same frame. At up to 120 dB, the camera retains detail in both the bright and dark portions of the scene simultaneously.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Performance
Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour accuracy and usable image detail at low ambient light levels - important in dimly lit corridors, car parks, or after-hours indoor environments where supplementary lighting is not always on. This is an optical and sensor-level capability, not a software enhancement.
Axis Zipstream Bandwidth Reduction
Zipstream works within H.264 and H.265 streams to preserve detail in regions of interest while reducing bitrate in static areas. In practice this means lower storage consumption and reduced network load without manually managing recording quality schedules.
Edge Vault Cybersecurity
Axis Edge Vault is a hardware-based security module that protects the device's cryptographic identity and simplifies authorisation of the camera on managed networks. Relevant for government, finance, and enterprise installations where network device authentication is a compliance requirement.
Who Buys This Model
- Corporate IT and security managers: Specifying cameras that meet cybersecurity compliance requirements - Edge Vault and ACAP v4 support address device authentication and third-party application integration at the network level.
- Integrators commissioning high-ceiling installations: Remote zoom and autofocus on the motorised varifocal lens eliminates the need to physically re-access the camera during commissioning - a material time saving on 4m-plus ceilings.
- Retail loss prevention teams: AXIS Object Analytics classifies humans and vehicle types on the edge, enabling automated alerts tied to zone crossings or loitering without server-side processing overhead.
- Educational and government facility managers: The IK10-rated housing handles environments where camera housings are at risk of deliberate or incidental impact, and the analytics reduce guard response workload on large campuses.
- System integrators replacing analogue with IP: H.265 with Zipstream keeps storage and bandwidth demands manageable on existing network infrastructure during staged migration projects.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS P3265-V does two things genuinely well: it delivers on-camera deep learning analytics that go beyond basic motion detection, and the motorised varifocal lens makes commissioning on difficult-access ceilings practical. Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB is a real differentiator for high-contrast lobby and retail environments, and Lightfinder 2.0 keeps colour detail usable in low ambient light. These are hardware and firmware-level capabilities, not marketing claims.
What this camera will not do: it has no built-in IR illumination, so it is not a zero-light solution - it depends on ambient light being present. It is an indoor-only product and is not rated for outdoor or harsh-environment use. If wide-area single-camera coverage is the brief, a fisheye or multi-sensor panoramic camera will cover more floor area from a single ceiling position. The P3265-V is available through Security Australia for installations where analytics depth and lens flexibility are the primary selection criteria.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The P3265-V has no built-in IR - ambient lighting must be sufficient for the camera's Lightfinder 2.0 sensor to produce usable footage. In spaces that go completely dark after hours (server rooms, storage areas, unlit corridors), plan for supplementary lighting or specify a camera with integrated IR. Also confirm your PoE switch or injector meets the camera's power requirements before install - check the Axis datasheet for exact consumption to avoid under-powered drops on longer cable runs.
Audio Connectivity Note: The P3265-V supports two-way full-duplex audio, but the audio connections are external - the camera provides an external microphone input and line output rather than integrated speaker and microphone capsules. If two-way audio is required, budget for and plan the installation of a compatible external microphone and speaker connected to the camera's I/O terminals.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need on-camera deep learning analytics to classify humans and vehicles without relying on server-side processing - the ARTPEC-8 DLPU handles AXIS Object Analytics entirely on the edge.
- Good match if: The installation involves high ceilings or restricted access points where returning to physically adjust the lens is not practical - the 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens focuses and zooms remotely via software.
- You may need a different model if: The camera position goes fully dark after hours with no supplementary lighting - a dome camera with integrated IR illumination would be more appropriate for zero-light indoor environments.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: On-camera deep learning classification of humans and vehicle types is required, combined with a motorised varifocal lens for remote commissioning on difficult-access ceilings in indoor environments.
- You may need a different model if: The space goes fully dark without supplementary lighting - an indoor dome camera with integrated IR illumination would be more appropriate. Similarly, if outdoor coverage is required, a weatherproof turret or bullet camera in the Axis range would be the correct product type.
- Pairs well with: An ONVIF-compatible NVR or VMS that supports AXIS Object Analytics event triggers - pairing with event-driven recording reduces storage consumption compared to continuous recording across all channels.
Common Questions
-
Does the P3265-V work in complete darkness?
No. The P3265-V has no built-in IR illumination and relies entirely on ambient light. Lightfinder 2.0 extends usable performance into low-light conditions, but the camera requires some ambient light to produce a usable image. Spaces that go fully dark after hours need either supplementary lighting or a camera model with integrated IR. -
Will the analytics classify vehicle types, or just detect movement?
Yes - it classifies vehicle types. AXIS Object Analytics running on the ARTPEC-8 DLPU differentiates between humans, vehicles, and specific vehicle types on the camera itself. This is a deep learning inference running at the edge, not server-side processing - alerts are tied to classified objects, not generic pixel-change detection. -
Can I adjust the lens remotely after installation, or do I need physical access to the camera?
Yes - fully remote. The 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens adjusts zoom level and triggers autofocus via the camera's web interface or VMS. Once the camera is physically mounted and connected to the network, no hands-on access to the dome is needed to change the field of view or focus point. This is particularly relevant on installations where ceiling access involves scaffolding or a lift. -
What does Forensic WDR at 120 dB mean in a real installation?
It means the camera can retain legible detail across scenes with extreme brightness differences within the same frame. In a lobby where daylight through a glass facade is many times brighter than the shaded reception desk, standard cameras will either blow out the exterior or underexpose the interior. At up to 120 dB, Forensic WDR handles both simultaneously - which matters for identifying individuals walking in from bright outdoor conditions. -
Does this camera have a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way audio?
No - not built-in. The P3265-V supports two-way full-duplex audio, but uses external connections: an external microphone input and a line output. A compatible external microphone and speaker need to be connected to the camera's audio terminals to enable live two-way communication. The camera does not contain integrated capsules. Plan for the external hardware and cable runs during design. -
How does Axis Zipstream actually reduce storage, and does it affect image quality during events?
Zipstream works by dynamically increasing compression in static, low-interest areas of the frame while maintaining or increasing bitrate in regions where motion or detail occurs. The result is a lower average bitrate over time without affecting the quality of recorded footage during actual events. It operates within H.264 and H.265 streams and does not require a separate configuration layer - it is applied at the encoder level on the ARTPEC-8 chip. -
What is ACAP v4, and does it matter for a standard installation?
ACAP (Axis Camera Application Platform) version 4 is the framework that allows third-party analytics applications to run on the camera's processor. For a standard installation using only AXIS Object Analytics, it does not require additional configuration. It matters when a project requires specialised on-camera applications - such as queue detection, retail heat mapping, or custom event logic built by third-party developers - which can be loaded directly onto the camera and run on the ARTPEC-8 DLPU. The P3265-V is supplied by Security Australia and supports ACAP v4 out of the box. -
Does the motorised varifocal lens support digital PTZ in addition to optical zoom?
Yes - both are available but they are separate functions. The motorised varifocal lens provides optical zoom between 3.4mm and 8.9mm and is used during setup to set the permanent field of view. Digital PTZ with preset positions is a separate feature that operates within the captured frame during live viewing and playback, allowing operators to pan and zoom into areas of interest without moving the physical lens. The optical zoom sets the scene; digital PTZ navigates within it.
