Product Overview
Model: AXIS-01997-001
Who This Is For
When getting the lens position right at commissioning time - without a return visit - is the priority, the Axis P1455-LE is built exactly for that workflow. Installers working on outdoor perimeter runs, car park entries, loading dock approaches, and building facades can remotely adjust focus and zoom after the camera is mounted and cabled, using P-Iris control and remote focus via the management interface. The 3-9mm varifocal lens covers a horizontal field of view from 114 degrees down to 37 degrees, giving genuine flexibility across a wide range of mounting distances and standoff scenarios. Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR up to 120 dB handle the mixed-lighting conditions common at site entries and transitions, while OptimizedIR delivers usable IR illumination out to 40 metres in complete darkness. IK10-rated housing adds physical robustness for exposed locations where camera tampering is a realistic concern.
What This Camera Actually Does
Remote Varifocal Lens Control
The 3-9mm varifocal lens adjusts remotely via the management interface after installation. Focus, zoom, and P-Iris aperture are all configurable without a second set of hands at the camera - reducing commissioning time on multi-camera outdoor runs and elevated mounting positions.
Forensic WDR Up to 120 dB
Forensic WDR processes high-contrast scenes - vehicle headlights against dark backgrounds, sunlit entry points, mixed artificial and natural light - maintaining detail in both bright and shadow areas simultaneously at up to 25/30 fps when WDR is active.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Colour
Colour imaging down to 0.07 lux at F1.6 means the camera retains usable colour detail in poorly lit outdoor areas - car parks, alleyways, building perimeters - before switching to black-and-white at 0.01 lux and IR illumination at 0 lux.
OptimizedIR to 40 Metres
Built-in IR illumination adapts its intensity and spread to match the current zoom setting, reducing hotspot overexposure at close range while extending reach up to 40 metres at longer focal lengths - practical for approaches, driveways, and corridor-style outdoor runs.
AXIS Object Analytics
On-camera analytics classify detected objects as people or vehicles without requiring a separate analytics server. Alarm conditions can be configured around object type and zone crossing, reducing false triggers from environmental movement such as vegetation or lighting changes.
Axis Zipstream Bandwidth Saving
Zipstream dynamically reduces bitrate in static scene areas while maintaining full detail in regions of activity. Available in both H.264 and H.265, it lowers storage and network load without reducing recorded detail at the moment of an event - meaningful on multi-camera NVR systems.
Who Buys This Model
- Security integrators on commercial sites: Remote focus and zoom via P-Iris control allows lens adjustment from the management interface post-installation, cutting down return visits on multi-camera outdoor deployments at elevated or difficult-access mounting positions.
- Site managers at industrial facilities: IK10-rated housing combined with IP67 weatherproofing suits exposed loading dock and perimeter locations where physical tampering or weather damage to cameras is a regular concern.
- IT and security teams running Axis ecosystems: Axis Edge Vault, secure boot, and signed firmware align with enterprise network security requirements, while intelligent pairing with Axis network speakers extends the camera to include audio response without additional complex wiring.
- Operations teams needing event-driven analytics: AXIS Object Analytics running on-camera classifies people and vehicles at the edge, supporting alarm-configured VMS integrations without a dedicated analytics server licence for each channel.
Honest Assessment
The P1455-LE does two things particularly well: it handles the mixed-lighting outdoor scenarios that cause image quality problems for lesser cameras - Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB and Lightfinder 2.0 are genuine differentiators at entry points and transitions between lit and unlit areas - and it reduces on-site commissioning complexity through remote varifocal control. For integrators managing multiple outdoor positions on a single site visit, that matters. Axis Edge Vault and signed firmware make it a credible choice where network security posture is part of the specification brief. What it will not do is deliver the wide-area situational awareness of a PTZ or panoramic camera - it covers one fixed angle at a time, and for continuous tracking across a large open space, a motorised PTZ would serve better. Two-way audio requires pairing with a separate Axis network speaker; there is no built-in speaker on this unit. Available through Security Australia.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The varifocal lens range is 3-9mm with a horizontal field of view from 114 degrees to 37 degrees - plan your mounting distance and coverage angle before committing to a bracket position, particularly on narrow approaches where the wider end of the lens may over-cover the intended scene. Remote zoom and focus work through the Axis device management interface, so confirm your network path to the camera is active before attempting final focus adjustment from a workstation rather than at the camera itself.
Frame Rate Note: Forensic WDR and high frame rate cannot operate simultaneously at full capacity. With Forensic WDR active, maximum frame rate is 25/30 fps (50/60 Hz). Disabling WDR allows up to 50/60 fps. For scenes where fast-moving subjects such as vehicles are the primary target and lighting contrast is controlled, consider whether WDR is needed or whether the higher frame rate is the more useful setting.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are mounting on a building facade or eave covering a defined outdoor approach or entry point and need remote varifocal lens adjustment to finalise the scene after installation without a return visit.
- Good match if: The site has high-contrast lighting - vehicle headlights, sunlit entry zones, or mixed artificial and natural light transitions - where Forensic WDR up to 120 dB and Lightfinder 2.0 will maintain detail that a standard camera loses.
- You may need a different model if: You need to actively track subjects across a large open area or car park - a motorised PTZ camera with auto-tracking would give you the continuous repositioning coverage that a fixed-lens outdoor camera cannot provide.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a fixed outdoor bullet camera with remote varifocal lens adjustment, high-contrast WDR imaging up to 120 dB, on-camera object analytics, and IK10 physical robustness for an exposed perimeter or approach position.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is continuous wide-area tracking across a large open space - a motorised PTZ camera provides the repositioning range and auto-tracking that a fixed varifocal outdoor camera cannot replicate.
- Pairs well with: A PoE network switch, Axis-compatible NVR or VMS with AXIS Object Analytics integration, and Axis network speakers for edge-to-edge audio pairing at monitored access points.
Common Questions
-
Does the P1455-LE support two-way audio out of the box?
No - not without a paired Axis network speaker. The camera has an external microphone input and line input, plus audio streaming capability, but there is no built-in speaker. Two-way audio is achieved by pairing the P1455-LE with a compatible Axis network speaker using the edge-to-edge intelligent device pairing feature. Once paired, the speaker handles the outbound audio while the camera handles the incoming audio path and triggers. -
Will this camera work for vehicle detection and alerting without a separate analytics server?
Yes. AXIS Object Analytics runs on the camera itself and classifies detected objects as people or vehicles at the edge. No external analytics server or per-channel software licence is required for basic people and vehicle classification. Alarm triggers based on object type and zone crossing can be configured directly on the camera and passed to a compatible VMS or monitoring system. -
What is the varifocal lens range and how is it adjusted?
The lens range is 3-9mm at F1.6, covering a horizontal field of view from 114 degrees at the wide end to 37 degrees at the telephoto end. Adjustment is done remotely through the Axis device management interface - zoom, focus, and P-Iris aperture can all be set from a workstation with network access to the camera. There is no physical manual adjustment required at the camera body after mounting, provided the network connection is active during commissioning. -
Can Forensic WDR and maximum frame rate operate at the same time?
No - there is a trade-off. With Forensic WDR active, the maximum frame rate is 25 fps on 50 Hz systems or 30 fps on 60 Hz systems. Disabling WDR allows the camera to run at up to 50 fps (50 Hz) or 60 fps (60 Hz) in all resolutions. For scenes where fast-moving vehicles are the primary subject in controlled lighting, disabling WDR in favour of higher frame rate may produce better results. For high-contrast entry and transition zones, WDR is generally the more useful setting even at the lower frame rate. -
How does Axis Edge Vault affect network integration?
Axis Edge Vault provides hardware-based protection for the camera's device identity and cryptographic keys. In practice, this means the camera can securely authenticate on the network without relying solely on software credentials, simplifying device authorisation workflows on enterprise networks that require verified device identity before granting network access. It also supports secure storage of certificates used in HTTPS and IEEE 802.1X network access control scenarios. -
Does Zipstream work with H.265 as well as H.264 on this camera?
Yes. Axis Zipstream is available in both H.264 and H.265 on the P1455-LE. It operates by dynamically lowering the bitrate in areas of the frame with little or no activity while maintaining full detail in regions where motion or events are occurring. On multi-camera NVR systems, the combined storage and bandwidth reduction across all channels running Zipstream can be significant - the exact saving varies with scene activity levels. The camera supports VBR, ABR, and MBR modes in both H.264 and H.265. -
Will the IR illumination cause overexposure at close range when the lens is set to wide angle?
OptimizedIR is designed to mitigate this. The IR illumination intensity and beam spread adapt automatically to match the current zoom setting - at the wide end of the lens (3mm, 114-degree horizontal FOV), the IR spreads to match the wider scene rather than projecting a concentrated beam that overexposes subjects at close range. At longer focal lengths approaching 9mm, the IR narrows and extends reach toward the 40-metre maximum. This is managed automatically without manual IR intensity adjustment, though scene conditions and surfaces will still affect real-world performance. The P1455-LE is stocked by Security Australia for integrators and installers specifying Axis products for Australian commercial and industrial sites.
