AXIS 90W Midspan AC/DC 02209-001
Built as a single-port midspan power injector for PoE-dependent installations, the AXIS 90W Midspan delivers up to 90W of IEEE 802.3bt-compliant power to a single device - making it well suited to powering high-demand network cameras, PTZ units, or multi-sensor cameras that exceed standard PoE limits. It accepts both AC and DC input for flexible deployment in a range of installation environments.
Why This Model
- 90W PoE output: Covers IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++) power budgets, meaning it can drive high-draw devices like PTZ cameras or multi-sensor units that a standard PoE or PoE+ switch simply cannot support.
- AC and DC input: Accepts both AC and DC supply, giving installers the flexibility to power the midspan from mains or a DC source - useful in cabinets, remote sites, or hybrid power setups.
- Single-port dedicated injector: Adds high-wattage PoE to an existing non-PoE switch without replacing infrastructure, keeping upgrade costs low when only 1 high-draw device needs power.

Product Overview
Model: AXIS 90 W Midspan AC/DC
Who This Is For
For installers and IT managers who need to power a single high-demand AXIS device where the existing network switch does not deliver sufficient PoE budget. The AXIS 90W Midspan AC/DC slots into an existing Cat5e or Cat6 cable run between the switch and the end device, injecting up to 90W of PoE power without requiring the switch to be replaced. This is particularly relevant when deploying power-hungry AXIS hardware - such as PTZ cameras, multi-sensor units, or access control door controllers - in locations where running a separate power cable is impractical or cost-prohibitive. Electricians and low-voltage integrators working on staged upgrades will also find the midspan useful when expanding an existing installation one device at a time, avoiding a full switch replacement to accommodate a single high-wattage endpoint.
What This Device Actually Does
90W PoE Power Injection
Delivers up to 90W to a single connected device via the Ethernet cable itself. This covers the full power budget of high-demand AXIS endpoints including PTZ cameras and multi-sensor units that standard 15W or 30W PoE switches cannot feed.
AC/DC Input Flexibility
Accepts both AC mains and DC input, giving installers options where only a DC power source is available - such as a UPS-backed 48V DC panel or solar-supported enclosures in remote or industrial locations.
Midspan Pass-Through Architecture
Sits inline between the network switch and the end device. Data traffic passes through unmodified - the midspan only adds power. Your existing switch, VLAN configuration, and network traffic are not affected by installation.
Single-Port, Single-Device Focus
Designed to power 1 device only. This makes it the right tool when you need to upgrade power to one specific endpoint without touching the rest of the installation - common in staged upgrades and PTZ add-ons.
Who Buys This Model
- Security integrators upgrading existing sites: When a client adds a PTZ or multi-sensor camera to a system where the current switch lacks the PoE budget, the midspan resolves the power shortfall without a full switch replacement.
- IT managers maintaining mixed networks: Where the network switch is managed by a separate IT team and cannot be swapped out, the midspan injects the required wattage independently without touching switch configuration.
- Installers working in remote or off-grid locations: The AC/DC input allows the unit to run from a DC-backed power supply or UPS panel where mains AC is unreliable or unavailable.
- AXIS-specialist integrators standardising infrastructure: Pairing AXIS midspans with AXIS cameras keeps the installation within a single vendor ecosystem for warranty, support, and compatibility documentation.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS 90W Midspan AC/DC does one job well: it gets sufficient power to a single high-demand AXIS device when the existing switch cannot. The inline pass-through design means there is no network reconfiguration required, and the AC/DC input flexibility adds genuine value in installations where a stable DC power source is already present. For single-camera power upgrades on established sites, this is a clean, low-disruption solution. What it will not do is power multiple devices - if you have 4 or 8 endpoints that all need higher wattage, a purpose-built PoE++ switch is a more cost-effective and tidier solution than stacking multiple midspans. It is also worth noting this unit is designed specifically for AXIS devices, so verify compatibility with any non-AXIS endpoint before ordering. Available through Security Australia as part of the AXIS accessories range.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: Confirm the power draw of your target AXIS device before ordering. While this midspan supports up to 90W, the connected device must negotiate PoE class correctly. Also check your cable run - the midspan introduces 2 additional RJ45 connection points into the run, so ensure total cable length including patch leads stays within the 100m Ethernet limit.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You have a single AXIS PTZ or high-wattage camera that exceeds your switch's per-port PoE budget and you need a retrofit solution without replacing the switch.
- Good match if: Your installation site uses a DC-backed UPS panel as the primary power source and you need PoE delivery compatible with DC input.
- You may need a different model if: You are powering 4 or more high-wattage devices - a PoE++ managed switch will be more cost-effective and easier to manage than multiple single-port midspans.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need to power a single AXIS device at up to 90W on an existing cable run where the current switch cannot deliver sufficient PoE wattage.
- You may need a different model if: You have multiple high-wattage endpoints to power - a PoE++ managed switch covering all ports will be more cost-effective and easier to manage than individual midspans per device.
- Pairs well with: High-wattage AXIS PTZ cameras, multi-sensor cameras, or AXIS access control door controllers that exceed standard 15W or 30W PoE budgets.
Common Questions
-
Will this midspan work with any PoE camera or only AXIS devices?
It is designed and tested for use with AXIS devices. While PoE is a standardised protocol, AXIS midspans are validated against AXIS hardware for correct power negotiation and warranty support. Using it with non-AXIS cameras may function in practice but is outside the supported configuration - confirm compatibility with the third-party manufacturer before deploying. -
Does this midspan affect the network data passing through it?
No. The midspan only adds power to the cable - it does not inspect, modify, or interrupt data traffic. Your existing switch, VLAN assignments, QoS settings, and network management remain completely unchanged. This is a core advantage of the inline midspan architecture. -
What DC voltage input does this unit accept?
The product is specified as AC/DC compatible, confirming it accepts a DC power source in addition to standard AC mains. For the confirmed DC voltage range, refer to the AXIS 90W Midspan AC/DC datasheet or contact Security Australia before specifying it into a DC-powered enclosure or UPS panel. -
How many devices can I power from a single unit?
One only. This is a single-port midspan. If you need to power multiple high-wattage devices, you will need 1 midspan per device, or a PoE++ switch with sufficient per-port and total power budget for all endpoints. -
Does adding this midspan reduce my maximum cable run length?
Yes, marginally - in practice. The midspan introduces 2 additional RJ45 connection points into the cable path. Total Ethernet cable length including all patch leads must remain within 100m. In most real installations the midspan sits close to the switch end, so this rarely causes a problem, but measure your full run including patch leads before installing. -
Is the 90W output the power delivered to the device or the total draw from the wall?
In PoE midspan terminology, the rated output (90W) refers to the maximum power budget available to the connected device. Total power drawn from the mains will be higher than 90W once the midspan's own power conversion losses are accounted for. Check the AXIS datasheet for confirmed efficiency figures before sizing your circuit or UPS.
