Product Overview

Model: P3738-PLE

Who This Is For

For security integrators and facility managers who need complete 360° situational awareness from a single camera position, the Axis P3738-PLE delivers full-perimeter coverage without blind spots, dead zones, or stitching gaps. Designed for outdoor deployment with pendant or wall-mount housing, this is the camera that eliminates the need for multiple fixed units covering the same area - car parks, building perimeters, open yards, transport hubs, and large retail forecourts all benefit from its single-point panoramic approach. The built-in deep learning analytics mean operators aren't sifting through false alarms triggered by weather or foliage - the system classifies humans and vehicles at the edge. The varifocal 3.18-8.12mm lens range per sensor allows each channel to be tuned at commissioning to match the actual detection zone required, making this a camera that rewards careful installation planning.

What This Camera Actually Does

360° Panoramic Coverage

Multiple sensors combine to deliver uninterrupted 360° horizontal coverage from a single mounting point. There are no corner gaps, no overlapping camera schedules to manage, and no blind spots where a subject can walk out of frame. One position covers the full perimeter view.

Deep Learning Analytics at the Edge

On-camera deep learning classifies detected objects as humans or vehicles without relying on a server or cloud. This reduces false alarm rates significantly compared to standard pixel-based motion detection - wind-blown trees and passing headlights don't trigger the same alert as a person crossing a boundary.

4K Multi-Sensor Resolution

The P3738-PLE captures 4K detail across its combined panoramic image. This means individual sensors produce images with enough pixel density to support post-event review, zooming into a specific quadrant without losing enough detail to identify clothing, number plates in range, or faces at appropriate distances.

360° IR Illumination

Integrated infrared illuminators cover the full 360° field, not just a forward arc. This matters in unlit car parks or perimeter zones where the camera needs to maintain usable night-time imagery in every direction simultaneously, without requiring separate IR flood lighting infrastructure.

Varifocal Lens Per Sensor

The 3.18-8.12mm motorised zoom range allows each sensor to be individually adjusted during commissioning to match the geometry of its coverage zone. A sensor covering a long car park approach can be dialled in tighter than one covering a wide entry forecourt - meaningful flexibility that fixed-lens panoramics don't offer.

Outdoor-Rated PLE Housing

The PLE designation means this unit ships in an outdoor pendant/wall-mount housing rated for Australian weather conditions. It is designed to be mounted on a pole, wall bracket, or ceiling soffit outdoors without requiring an additional weatherproof enclosure or aftermarket housing.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security Integrators on Commercial Sites: Professionals specifying camera positions for car parks, logistics yards, or open retail precincts where a single pole-mounted unit needs to replace 4 or more fixed cameras covering the same area.
  • Transport and Infrastructure Operators: Bus depots, rail yards, and freight terminals where full perimeter monitoring is required from minimal mounting infrastructure and 360° IR coverage keeps night-time footage usable.
  • Facility Managers Reducing False Alarm Load: Organisations running monitored sites where standard motion detection generates excessive after-hours alerts - the on-camera deep learning analytics filter out environmental false triggers before they reach the monitoring centre.
  • Education and Health Campus Security Teams: Large open campuses where perimeter zones, drop-off areas, and courtyards need consistent wide-area coverage without a dense camera grid and the associated cabling and NVR channel count.
  • Critical Infrastructure and Government Sites: Locations requiring AXIS Object Analytics with audit-ready event classification, where on-camera processing is preferred over cloud-dependent analytics pipelines.

Honest Assessment

The P3738-PLE does a specific job well: it replaces multiple fixed cameras at a single outdoor mounting point, delivers 360° coverage with IR illumination in all directions, and runs deep learning object classification on-camera without needing a separate analytics server. The varifocal lens range per sensor is a genuine advantage at commissioning - most panoramic cameras lock you into a fixed angle of view. For large open areas where reducing camera positions and cabling runs matters, this is a technically strong choice available through Security Australia. What it will not do is provide the close-in optical zoom of a PTZ for tracking a subject across a large site - once an alert fires, operators zooming into a specific zone are working with cropped digital magnification rather than optical zoom. If active tracking of a moving subject across distances greater than the panoramic field is a primary requirement, a PTZ camera paired with this unit will give a more complete response capability.

Before You Buy

Power Budget: The P3738-PLE is a multi-sensor outdoor camera with IR and deep learning processing running simultaneously - confirm your switch or PoE injector can deliver sufficient wattage per port before commissioning. Standard 802.3af (15.4W) ports are unlikely to be sufficient; verify PoE+ (802.3at, 30W) availability at the planned switch port. Undersupplying power will result in sensors cycling off or IR being reduced automatically.

Dewarping and VMS Compatibility: To get the full benefit of individual sensor streams, corridor views, and dewarped panoramic layouts, confirm your VMS or NVR supports multi-channel Axis panoramic cameras with per-sensor stream management. Some entry-level NVRs will see this as a single stream only - you will lose the ability to manage each sensor's field of view independently in the interface.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need 360° outdoor coverage from a single pole or wall mount position and want to reduce camera count, cabling infrastructure, and NVR channel usage on an open site such as a car park or transport yard.
  • Good match if: Your site has an existing false alarm problem from standard motion detection and you need on-camera deep learning to classify humans and vehicles before alerts reach an operator or monitoring centre.
  • You may need a different model if: Active subject tracking across large distances is required - a PTZ camera with optical zoom and auto-tracking will serve that function better and can be used alongside a panoramic unit for an overview-plus-track setup.

Real-World Scenarios

Unlit Car Park Perimeter

Mounted on a central pole in an open car park with no ambient lighting, the 360° IR means every direction has usable night-time footage from a single camera. No dark quadrants, no gaps in IR coverage between separate units.

Monitored Site - Reducing False Alarms

A monitored industrial facility with wind-swept open areas was generating dozens of overnight alerts from standard motion detection. On-camera deep learning filters out environmental movement and sends alerts only when a human or vehicle is classified, cutting operator workload substantially.

School Campus Drop-Off Zone

A single P3738-PLE mounted above the main entry covers pedestrian movement, vehicle drop-off, and both footpath approaches simultaneously. The varifocal per-sensor adjustment allows the sensor facing the footpath to be zoomed in slightly for better identification distance without affecting other sensors.

Freight and Logistics Yard

A yard operator needed to reduce camera infrastructure on an expanded site. Pole-mounted P3738-PLE units at key internal intersections replaced 4-camera corner setups, reducing cabling runs, NVR channels consumed, and maintenance points across the facility.

Town Square and Public Space

Where a local council or venue needs to monitor a central open space from a single discreet mounting point, the 360° coverage with 4K detail across all directions provides the full scene context needed for post-event review of incidents from any direction.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need 360° outdoor coverage from a single network connection and mounting point, with on-camera deep learning analytics that classify humans and vehicles at the edge without a dedicated analytics server.
  • You may need a different model if: Active optical zoom and subject tracking across large open distances is required - a PTZ camera handles long-range tracking and close-in zoom in a way a multi-sensor panoramic cannot, and the two camera types are often used together on larger sites.
  • Pairs well with: A PTZ camera for overview-plus-track deployments, and an enterprise-grade VMS that supports individual sensor stream management for multi-channel panoramic units.

Common Questions

  1. Does the P3738-PLE require PoE+ or will a standard PoE switch port work?

PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at, up to 30W) is strongly recommended and in most configurations required. The P3738-PLE runs multiple sensors, integrated IR illuminators in all directions, and on-camera deep learning processing simultaneously. Standard 802.3af PoE ports are rated to 15.4W, which is insufficient for full operation. Confirm your switch has 802.3at PoE+ ports available before specifying cable runs or switch hardware for this camera.
  2. How does the panoramic stitching work and will I see a seam or gap between sensors?

Each sensor covers a defined horizontal arc, and the combined output is managed by Axis camera firmware to produce a seamless panoramic view. When viewed in a compatible VMS with panoramic dewarping enabled, the transition between sensor fields is blended into a continuous 360° image. Some VMS platforms display sensor streams individually rather than stitched - check your VMS vendor's compatibility with Axis multi-sensor panoramic cameras if a single seamless overview view is a requirement.
  3. What are the DORI distances for this camera and how far will it detect versus identify a person?

DORI distances (Detection, Observation, Recognition, Identification) on multi-sensor cameras are sensor-specific and depend on the lens focal length set during commissioning. With the lens adjusted toward the 8.12mm end of the varifocal range, each sensor delivers longer-range detection and better recognition performance in its arc. At wider focal lengths, the trade-off is broader coverage but shorter identification distances. Axis publishes sensor-level DORI calculations via their online lens calculator - this should be run at the planned focal length for each sensor as part of site design, particularly where a specific recognition or identification standard is required by a security specification.
  4. Will this camera work with my existing Axis NVR or third-party VMS?

Yes, in most cases. The P3738-PLE supports ONVIF Profile S, G, and T, which covers the majority of enterprise and commercial VMS platforms. For Axis-native systems using AXIS Camera Station or AXIS Video Management Software, full multi-sensor management and per-sensor analytics integration is available. On third-party platforms, the camera will typically appear as multiple streams - confirm your VMS handles Axis multi-sensor panoramic units specifically if you need dewarped panoramic views or per-sensor analytics event handling within the interface.
  5. Does the deep learning analytics require an Axis ACAP licence or additional subscription?

AXIS Object Analytics is built into supported Axis cameras and does not require a separate paid licence to enable the core human and vehicle classification functionality. It runs on-camera using the built-in deep learning processor. More advanced analytics scenarios or third-party ACAP applications installed alongside it may have separate licensing - but for standard perimeter intrusion detection with object classification, no additional subscription cost applies to the camera itself. Confirm with your integrator if specific analytics scenarios beyond human and vehicle detection are required.
  6. Will this camera work for a site that needs coverage in complete darkness with no external lighting?

Yes. The P3738-PLE includes integrated IR illuminators covering the full 360° field, so it does not depend on ambient or external lighting for night-time operation. In complete darkness the camera switches to IR mode and produces monochrome footage across all sensor directions. If full-colour night-time footage is a requirement, IR-only operation will not meet that need - a different camera type with white light illumination or wide aperture low-light sensors would be more appropriate. For standard perimeter monitoring in darkness where monochrome IR imagery is acceptable, this camera operates without any external lighting infrastructure. The team at Security Australia can advise on full-colour night-time alternatives if that is a specific requirement.
  7. How many NVR channels does this camera consume when connected to a recorder?

This depends on the NVR and VMS configuration. The P3738-PLE is a multi-sensor camera and each sensor typically appears as an individual channel on the NVR. On most platforms this means the camera consumes multiple channels - not a single channel as a fixed dome would. Factor this into channel planning when specifying NVR capacity. On some Axis-native NVR systems, multi-sensor Axis cameras may be handled with a different channel accounting model, so confirm with your NVR vendor how multi-sensor cameras are licensed and recorded before finalising system design.
