Product Overview
Model: P1385-E
Who This Is For
When precise lens positioning across a variable distance is the priority, a fixed-lens camera simply cannot deliver. The Axis P1385-E is built for integrators and security professionals who need to lock in the exact field of view after installation - whether that's a narrow corridor approach, a car park entry lane, or a loading dock with a 20-metre run. The 2.8-13mm varifocal lens lets you dial in coverage on-site rather than committing to a focal length before the camera goes up. Combined with IP66/IP67/IK10 ratings, this outdoor box camera handles weather, dust, and physical impact in demanding environments. The onboard AI analytics add genuine intelligence - classifying people and vehicles rather than reacting to every shadow or passing car. This is a camera for sites where image purpose matters and installers need flexibility without sacrificing outdoor durability.
What This Camera Actually Does
Varifocal Lens - On-Site Adjustment
The 2.8-13mm motorised varifocal lens means you physically adjust focal length and focus after mounting. This is critical when the final camera position changes, distances are unknown during design, or a single install needs to cover anywhere from a wide entry to a long narrow approach.
AI Analytics - Object Classification
AXIS Object Analytics runs on the camera itself, classifying detections as people or vehicles rather than triggering on motion alone. This reduces false alarms from wind, animals, and light changes, and supports rules-based alerts such as object-in-area and line crossing tied to specific object types.
IP66/IP67/IK10 Outdoor Housing
Rated for full dust ingress protection, temporary immersion, and IK10 impact resistance, the P1385-E is built for exposed outdoor positions - car parks, building perimeters, industrial sites, and anywhere subject to weather extremes or the risk of deliberate interference with the camera housing.
Wide Dynamic Range
WDR handles scenes with simultaneous bright and dark areas - a car park entry with sunlight behind approaching vehicles, a gatehouse with an open sky background, or a doorway lit from inside. The sensor balances exposure across the frame rather than blowing out highlights or losing detail in shadow.
Edge Storage and Open Platform
A microSD card slot provides local edge storage for redundancy or standalone operation. The AXIS open platform supports third-party applications installed directly on the camera, meaning analytics and specialised detection apps can be added post-deployment without replacing hardware.
2MP 1080p Resolution
Full HD 1080p at 25fps delivers usable detail for identification purposes when the varifocal lens is set correctly for the target distance. At 2MP the bandwidth and storage demands remain manageable across multi-camera NVR deployments, particularly important when running edge analytics simultaneously.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Commercial Sites: Professionals specifying a camera that survives harsh outdoor conditions while delivering AI-driven event classification - particularly on sites where VMS platforms are already AXIS-compatible and analytics outputs need to feed into access or alarm systems.
- Industrial Facility Managers: Sites with loading docks, perimeter fences, and entry control points where IK10 impact resistance and IP67 weatherproofing are non-negotiable and where the varifocal lens covers varying approach distances from a single mounting position.
- Car Park and Transport Operators: Environments with strong backlighting, vehicle traffic, and the need to classify object types for counting, loitering detection, or restricted zone alerts - all handled on-camera without relying solely on NVR-side processing.
- Councils and Government Facilities: Organisations requiring ONVIF-compliant cameras with a proven manufacturer track record, open-platform expansion capability, and a housing that meets vandal-resistance requirements for public or semi-public spaces.
Honest Assessment
The P1385-E does its best work when the installation requires flexibility at commissioning time. The 2.8-13mm varifocal range is genuinely useful on sites where the final mounting position shifts, and the IK10/IP66/IP67 combination is among the more robust outdoor ratings available in a box-format camera. AXIS Object Analytics running at the edge is a practical advantage - it reduces NVR processing load and keeps alert quality high without requiring a separate analytics server. The open platform is a long-term benefit for integrators who want to expand capability on existing hardware. Where this camera is not the right fit: it has no built-in IR illumination, so low-light performance depends entirely on site lighting being adequate or a separate IR or white-light illuminator being added to the installation. It is also not a PTZ - if wide-area tracking or operator-controlled pan/tilt is needed, a PTZ model will serve that scenario better. Available through Security Australia, the P1385-E is positioned at the professional end of the outdoor box camera market.
Before You Buy
Illumination Planning: The P1385-E has no built-in IR illuminator. Night performance depends entirely on existing site lighting. If the target scene is not adequately lit after dark, budget for a compatible external IR or white-light illuminator matched to the varifocal lens range you intend to use. A lens set to 13mm narrows the field significantly - ensure any external illuminator has a beam angle that matches the selected focal length or you will have an unevenly lit scene at the edges of frame.
PoE Requirement: Confirm your switch or injector delivers IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at PoE before installation. The P1385-E draws power over the network cable - no separate power supply is needed, but a switch port that does not support PoE will leave the camera unpowered. If running third-party analytics apps on the camera simultaneously, verify total power draw against your switch's per-port budget.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are mounting to a wall bracket or pole at a site where the exact target distance is confirmed on-site rather than at design stage - the 2.8-13mm varifocal lens lets you adjust field of view after the camera is physically positioned.
- Good match if: The installation is an industrial or commercial outdoor position subject to physical interference - the IK10-rated housing withstands direct impacts that would damage standard plastic dome or turret housings.
- You may need a different model if: The scene is unlit after dark and adding a separate illuminator is not practical - a camera with built-in IR or full-colour low-light capability (such as a turret or bullet model with integrated IR) will deliver better results in that specific scenario.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need varifocal flexibility at commissioning combined with IK10 impact resistance and on-camera AI analytics in a professional outdoor box format - particularly where the AXIS open platform matters for long-term application expansion.
- You may need a different model if: The monitored area is unlit at night and adding an external illuminator is not practical - a bullet or turret camera with built-in long-range IR will handle low-light conditions without requiring a separate fixture at each camera position.
- Pairs well with: An AXIS-compatible NVR or VMS platform with ONVIF Profile T support, a PoE managed switch with per-port power monitoring, and an external IR or white-light illuminator matched to the selected focal length range.
Common Questions
-
Does the P1385-E have built-in IR for night vision?
No. The P1385-E does not include built-in IR illumination. Night and low-light performance depends entirely on ambient site lighting or a separately installed external illuminator. If the deployment site has no after-dark lighting, factor an external IR or white-light unit into the installation design. Select the illuminator beam angle to match the focal length you intend to set on the 2.8-13mm varifocal lens. -
Will this camera work with non-Axis NVR systems?
Yes, in most cases. The P1385-E supports ONVIF Profile S, Profile G, and Profile T, which provides broad compatibility with third-party VMS and NVR platforms. However, edge-based features such as AXIS Object Analytics alerts and ACAP application outputs may not integrate fully with non-Axis management software. Core video streaming and recording will function; analytics event forwarding depends on whether your VMS supports the AXIS event API. -
What does AXIS Object Analytics actually classify, and how does it differ from standard motion detection?
AXIS Object Analytics classifies detected objects as humans or vehicles. Standard motion detection triggers on any pixel change in the frame - wind in trees, rain, changing light conditions, and animals all generate the same alert as a person. Object Analytics applies deep learning classification on the camera processor to confirm an object type before generating an event. The result is fewer nuisance alerts and more actionable notifications tied to a specific object category. Configurable rules include line crossing and object-in-area, each independently assignable to human or vehicle detection. -
Does this camera require PoE+, or will standard PoE work?
Standard IEEE 802.3af PoE is sufficient in most configurations. The P1385-E also supports 802.3at (PoE+). If you are running multiple ACAP applications simultaneously or operating in extreme cold where the camera draw may increase, confirm the per-port budget on your switch. A standard 15.4W 802.3af port is typically adequate for base operation - check the camera's maximum power draw specification against your switch's per-port output before finalising the installation. -
Can I install third-party applications directly on this camera?
Yes. The P1385-E runs the AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP), which allows compatible third-party applications to be installed and executed on the camera's onboard processor. This includes applications for retail analytics, people counting, licence plate detection (subject to lighting and lens positioning), and specialised industrial detection. Applications are installed through the camera's web interface. Confirm application compatibility with the camera's chipset and firmware version before purchase. The open platform is one of the key reasons integrators specify AXIS hardware for projects with evolving analytics requirements. Details on compatible applications are available through Security Australia or the AXIS application library. -
Will the P1385-E handle Australian summer heat and coastal environments?
Yes. The operating temperature range extends to 55 degrees C, covering Australian outdoor conditions including exposed northern and western Australian installations. IP66 and IP67 ratings protect against dust ingress and temporary water immersion, which also addresses salt air and heavy rain exposure in coastal deployments. The NEMA 4X rating provides an additional reference point for industrial and outdoor enclosure standards. For direct coastal installations subject to regular salt spray, inspect cable entry seals at routine maintenance intervals. -
Does the varifocal lens require manual physical adjustment or can it be set remotely?
The P1385-E uses a P-Iris varifocal lens where focus and zoom are adjusted physically during installation. This is not a motorised remote-zoom lens - initial setup requires a technician on-site to set the focal length and focus point. Once set, the P-Iris electronic iris control is managed through the camera's software. If remote zoom and focus adjustment post-installation is a requirement, a motorised varifocal model with remote zoom capability would better suit that workflow.
