Product Overview

Model: NVR-232MH-K-16P

Who This Is For

When channel capacity and future-proofing are the priority, installers and integrators specifying mid-to-large IP camera systems need a recorder that handles current deployments while leaving room to grow. The HiLook NVR-232MH-K-16P is a 32-channel network video recorder with 16 built-in PoE ports, support for up to 8MP resolution, and 2 internal HDD bays - making it a practical backbone for commercial sites, multi-tenancy properties, warehouses, and school campuses where 16 cameras are cabled directly to the unit and the remaining 16 channels pull from the local network. Installers appreciate having half the system powered and connected through the recorder itself, eliminating a separate PoE switch for those runs. End users gain a single management point for a full 32-camera deployment without needing to step up to enterprise-grade hardware.

What This NVR Actually Does

32-Channel Recording Capacity

Supports up to 32 IP cameras simultaneously, making it suited to medium and large installations where a single recorder needs to manage cameras across multiple zones, floors, or building entrances without splitting into separate systems.

16 Built-In PoE Ports

Half the camera channels can be run directly from the recorder's own PoE switch. This removes the need for a separate PoE injector or managed switch for those 16 cameras, simplifying the install and reducing rack or cabinet space.

8MP Resolution Support

Records at up to 8MP (4K) per channel, meaning high-resolution cameras deployed across the site are recorded at their full native quality. Useful for entrances, car parks, or tills where detail matters for identification purposes.

Dual HDD Bay Storage

Two internal hard drive bays allow on-site storage to be scaled up by fitting higher-capacity drives. For a 32-camera 8MP deployment, selecting appropriately sized drives is important to achieve the required retention period.

HiLook by Hikvision Ecosystem

Designed to work within the broader HiLook camera range, the NVR-232MH-K-16P benefits from plug-and-play compatibility with HiLook IP cameras and remote access through the Hik-Connect platform for off-site monitoring and playback.

Who Buys This Model

  • Commercial Installers: Fitting out office buildings, retail chains, or hospitality venues where 16-32 cameras are needed and a single, manageable recorder with built-in PoE reduces installation complexity.
  • School and Childcare Facility Managers: Deploying cameras across multiple rooms, corridors, and outdoor areas where 32 channels and central recording are required without managing multiple separate recorders.
  • Warehouse and Logistics Operators: Sites with loading docks, racking aisles, and perimeter coverage requiring a high channel count recorder that can accept 8MP cameras for wide-area detail.
  • Property and Strata Managers: Multi-tenancy buildings or mixed-use complexes where cameras cover common areas, car parks, lifts, and access points - centralised onto a single 32-channel system.

Honest Assessment

The NVR-232MH-K-16P does well as a mid-tier 32-channel recorder for sites that want the simplicity of integrated PoE without the cost or complexity of enterprise NVR platforms. The 16 on-board PoE ports are a genuine time-saver for installers, and 8MP support means the system is not a bottleneck when high-resolution cameras are specified. It is available through Security Australia as part of the broader HiLook by Hikvision line, which keeps camera-to-recorder compatibility straightforward. Where it reaches its limits: 2 HDD bays will constrain storage at high resolutions over long retention periods, so sites needing 30+ days of 8MP footage across all 32 channels should calculate storage requirements carefully before ordering. For larger deployments needing RAID redundancy, more HDD bays, or higher throughput, stepping up to the full Hikvision recorder range would be worth considering.

Before You Buy

Storage Planning: With 2 HDD bays and up to 32 channels recording at 8MP, storage fills quickly. Before purchasing drives, calculate your required retention period using an NVR storage calculator - factor in frame rate, compression type, and motion-only vs continuous recording. For most 32-camera 8MP deployments targeting 7-14 days retention, 2 x 8TB or larger surveillance-grade drives are the starting point.

PoE Budget and Channel Split: The 16 built-in PoE ports have a shared power budget. If connecting multiple high-power cameras (such as PTZ or multi-sensor units) through the on-board ports, verify the total PoE draw across all 16 connections does not exceed the recorder's rated PoE output. Cameras on channels 17-32 require a separate PoE switch or individual power supplies on your network.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are deploying 16-32 IP cameras on a commercial site and want to power and connect up to 16 of them directly from the recorder without a separate PoE switch.
  • Good match if: Your camera specification includes 8MP or 4K models and you need a recorder that captures at full native resolution across all channels.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 2 HDD bays for long-term high-resolution retention, RAID drive redundancy, or a channel count above 32 - a higher-tier NVR from the full Hikvision range on securityaustralia.com.au would be more appropriate.

Real-World Scenarios

Multi-Level Office Building

An installer covers 3 floors with 28 cameras - 16 cabled directly to the NVR's PoE ports in the comms room, with the remaining 12 connecting via the existing LAN. All 28 channels record to a single system managed by the building manager.

School Campus Upgrade

A secondary school replaces an ageing analogue system with 30 IP cameras across classrooms, corridors, and external gates. The 32-channel NVR consolidates everything into one interface, and staff review footage remotely via Hik-Connect when incidents are reported after hours.

Warehouse and Loading Dock

A logistics operator fits 8MP cameras at dock doors, racking aisles, and the yard perimeter. The NVR-232MH-K-16P records at full 8MP resolution across all channels, providing the image detail needed to read pallet labels and identify individuals during stock investigations.

Retail Centre Common Areas

A shopping centre security manager centralises car park, arcade, and service corridor cameras onto a single 32-channel recorder. The built-in PoE ports handle cameras in the nearest zones, while cameras further out connect through the centre's existing IP network infrastructure.

Apartment Complex Expansion

A strata manager running a 12-camera system on a smaller NVR migrates to the NVR-232MH-K-16P as new stages are developed. The 32-channel headroom means additional cameras covering new lifts, entry points, and bin areas are simply added without replacing the recorder again.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need 32 channels with 16 integrated PoE ports in a single unit and want to avoid the added cost and cabinet space of a separate PoE switch for half the deployment.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 2 HDD bays, drive redundancy (RAID), or a channel count above 32 - a higher-specification NVR from the full Hikvision range at securityaustralia.com.au would handle those requirements.
  • Pairs well with: HiLook 8MP turret or bullet IP cameras for direct plug-and-play connection through the on-board PoE ports, and a surveillance-grade NAS or external storage device if retention beyond what 2 internal drives can hold is required.

Common Questions

  1. Can I connect more than 16 cameras directly to the NVR without a separate switch?

No. The NVR-232MH-K-16P has 16 built-in PoE ports, so only 16 cameras can connect directly to the recorder for both power and data. The remaining 16 channels (channels 17-32) require cameras to be powered and connected through your local IP network via a separate PoE switch or individual power adapters.
  2. Does this NVR support 4K cameras?

Yes. The NVR-232MH-K-16P supports recording at up to 8MP (4K) resolution per channel. If you are deploying 8MP cameras, this recorder will capture footage at full native resolution rather than downscaling, provided the selected hard drives have sufficient write speed and capacity for the resulting file sizes.
  3. How much storage do I need for a 32-camera 8MP system?

It depends on frame rate, compression, and recording mode. As a general guide, continuous 8MP recording across 32 channels at typical frame rates will fill storage significantly faster than a 4MP deployment. For 7-day retention, 2 x 8TB surveillance-grade drives is a starting point - but calculating your exact requirements using a storage calculator before purchasing drives is strongly recommended. Storage sizing is something the team at Security Australia can assist with if you have specific retention requirements.
  4. Will this NVR work with cameras from other brands?

Partially. The NVR-232MH-K-16P is optimised for HiLook and Hikvision IP cameras, which offer plug-and-play recognition. ONVIF-compliant cameras from other manufacturers can generally be added manually, but advanced features such as smart event triggers and AI-based detection are typically only available when using HiLook or Hikvision cameras on this recorder.
  5. Can I view footage remotely from this NVR?

Yes. The NVR-232MH-K-16P supports remote access through the Hik-Connect platform, which allows live viewing and playback on a smartphone or tablet. Remote access requires the recorder to have an active internet connection and for Hik-Connect to be configured during setup - typically a straightforward process that most installers complete during commissioning.
  6. Does this recorder support RAID or drive redundancy?

No. The NVR-232MH-K-16P has 2 HDD bays but does not offer RAID configuration for drive redundancy. Both bays operate as independent storage. If a single drive fails, footage stored on that drive is at risk. Sites requiring redundant storage should consider a higher-tier NVR with RAID support or implement an external backup recording solution.
  7. What is the total PoE power budget across the 16 ports?

The total shared PoE power budget should be confirmed in the product datasheet before specifying power-hungry cameras across all 16 ports simultaneously. Standard IP dome and bullet cameras typically draw 7-12W each, but PTZ cameras, multi-sensor units, or cameras with built-in heaters can draw significantly more. If your camera selection includes high-draw devices, calculate the combined PoE load against the recorder's rated output to avoid overloading the on-board switch.
