Product Overview
Model: DS-2CE78U7T-IT3F
Who This Is For
For security integrators and site owners who need to lift image quality on an existing coaxial cable run without pulling new infrastructure, the Hikvision DS-2CE78U7T-IT3F delivers 8MP resolution over the same coax already in the wall. This is a TVI 4.0 turret camera built for outdoor use - eaves, soffits, carpark ceilings, and external walls - where the existing DVR system stays in place but the cameras need a genuine resolution upgrade. The 2.8mm fixed lens covers a wide angle suitable for driveways, building entrances, and open yard areas, while 60m EXIR keeps those scenes usable after dark. The IP67 housing handles rain, dust, and temperature extremes from -40°C to 60°C, making it a practical choice for exposed Australian outdoor conditions where the cabling budget is already spent.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP Over Coax
TVI 4.0 transmits 3840 x 2160 video over standard coaxial cable. That means existing cable runs on a site being upgraded from SD or 1080p analog cameras are reused as-is, with no new cabling required to reach 8MP output.
60m EXIR Night Vision
Hikvision's EXIR technology uses focused infrared LEDs designed to produce a more even illumination pattern across the frame, reducing the overexposed centre hotspot common in basic IR cameras. Effective to 60 metres in darkness.
Wide 2.8mm Fixed Lens
The 2.8mm lens provides approximately 100 degrees diagonal field of view, making it suited to entrances, driveways, and open areas where broad scene capture matters more than long-distance reach.
4-in-1 Signal Compatibility
Supports TVI, AHD, CVI, and CVBS output modes. The output format is switchable, so this camera integrates with a broader range of DVR brands and legacy systems beyond Hikvision-only setups.
IP67 Outdoor Housing
Fully dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. The operating temperature range of -40°C to 60°C covers harsh Australian outdoor environments including exposed coastal and inland locations.
Who Buys This Model
- Analog system upgraders: Sites with working coaxial cabling that need an 8MP image quality lift without a full IP migration - TVI 4.0 over existing coax makes this a direct swap.
- Small business owners: Shopfronts, warehouses, and trade premises running a Hikvision or compatible DVR who want sharper footage of entrances and carparks using the 2.8mm wide-angle lens.
- Property managers and strata: External common areas, car parks, and building perimeters where IP67 weatherproofing and 60m IR are the practical baseline requirements.
- Security installers on mixed-brand sites: The 4-in-1 output format gives flexibility to match DVRs from different manufacturers without forcing a full system replacement.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2CE78U7T-IT3F does one specific thing well: it upgrades image resolution on an existing coaxial infrastructure to a genuine 8MP output. The 3840 x 2160 resolution delivers noticeably more detail than legacy 2MP or 4MP analog cameras on the same cable run, and the 60m EXIR coverage is practical for most residential and light commercial outdoor scenes. The IP67 housing and wide operating temperature range mean it handles exposed Australian installations without special consideration. What it will not do is provide AI-based event detection, colour night vision, or the remote management flexibility of an IP-based camera. If a site is starting from scratch with no existing coax, an IP turret camera connected via PoE will typically offer more functionality per dollar. This model is available through Security Australia and suits upgrade scenarios specifically - it is not the first choice for a fresh IP network build.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: This camera runs on 12V DC power only - it does not support PoE. Confirm your DVR or power supply provides 12V DC at the camera end before ordering. Also verify your DVR supports TVI 4.0 or 8MP input; older TVI 3.0 DVRs will typically downsample the signal, and the full 8MP resolution will not be recorded. Check your DVR's maximum supported resolution per channel before committing to this camera across multiple positions.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You have existing coaxial cable runs and a TVI 4.0-compatible DVR, and want to upgrade camera resolution to 8MP without re-cabling.
- Good match if: The installation is outdoors in a wide-area position - driveway, carpark, building entrance - where the 2.8mm lens and 60m EXIR IR range suit the scene depth.
- You may need a different model if: You are building a new system from the ground up - an IP turret camera on a PoE NVR will give you more flexibility, AI event detection options, and simpler remote access management.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Existing coaxial cabling is in place and the DVR supports TVI 4.0 - the upgrade to 8MP is achieved without any new cable runs.
- You may need a different model if: You are building a new system or want AI-based detection, colour night vision, or PoE simplicity - an IP turret camera on a PoE NVR will suit those requirements better.
- Pairs well with: A TVI 4.0-compatible Hikvision DVR or any 4-in-1 compatible recorder with 8MP channel support, and a 12V DC centralised power distribution unit.
Common Questions
-
Will this camera work with my existing coaxial cabling?
Yes. The DS-2CE78U7T-IT3F transmits over standard coaxial cable using TVI 4.0, so existing RG59 or RG6 runs used by previous analog cameras are directly compatible. No new cabling is required, which is the primary reason installers specify this model for upgrade projects rather than full system replacements. -
Does this camera support PoE?
No. This is a 12V DC powered camera only - it does not support Power over Ethernet. Power must be supplied via a 12V DC adaptor or a centralised 12V DC power distribution unit at each camera position. PoE is a feature of IP cameras on an NVR-based system, not analog TVI cameras. -
Does this camera work with non-Hikvision DVRs?
Yes, in most cases. The 4-in-1 output supports TVI, AHD, CVI, and CVBS signal formats, which are switchable. This means the camera can be configured to match the input format of DVRs from other manufacturers that accept any of those 4 signal types. Confirm your DVR's supported input formats and maximum resolution per channel before purchasing. -
Will I actually get 8MP recording, or will my DVR downsample it?
Only if your DVR supports TVI 4.0 and 8MP input per channel. Older TVI 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0 DVRs - and many budget DVRs sold as "4K compatible" - will accept the signal but record at a lower resolution. Check your DVR's datasheet for confirmed per-channel maximum resolution before specifying this camera across multiple positions. The camera itself outputs full 3840 x 2160 - the limiting factor is the recorder. -
Does this camera work for driveway coverage at night?
Yes, within 60 metres. The EXIR infrared illumination reaches up to 60m, which covers most residential driveway lengths and standard commercial approach roads. The 2.8mm lens provides a wide angle suited to capturing full driveway width. For very long driveways or narrow approaches requiring more focal reach, a 3.6mm or 6mm lens variant would be more suitable if available in the same model range. -
Is the IP67 rating sufficient for direct rain exposure in Australian conditions?
Yes. IP67 means the housing is fully dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre, which exceeds what a wall or eave-mounted outdoor camera encounters in normal Australian weather. The operating temperature range of -40°C to 60°C also covers the full range of Australian climate conditions from alpine to tropical. The camera is confirmed for outdoor installation without additional protective housing. It is part of the Security Australia range of Hikvision analog cameras suited to outdoor Australian deployments.
