Hikvision DS-96128NXI-S16R 3U NVR | 128-Channel AI NVR with AcuSense & RAID
When a large-scale IP surveillance deployment demands high-channel capacity, centralised AI analytics, and built-in data redundancy, the DS-96128NXI-S16R delivers. This 3U rack-mount NVR supports 128 channels with AcuSense smart detection and RAID storage protection across 16 drive bays - making it suited to enterprise, government, or multi-site installations. No HDDs are included; drives must be sourced separately to match your capacity requirements.
Why This Model
- 128-Channel capacity: Consolidates a full enterprise camera network into a single recorder, reducing rack space and simplifying management compared to running multiple lower-channel units.
- AcuSense AI detection: Filters alarms by human and vehicle targets rather than triggering on irrelevant motion, which dramatically reduces false alerts across large camera deployments.
- 16-Bay RAID support: Protects recorded footage against individual drive failures, a critical requirement for any installation where loss of evidence or continuous recording is not acceptable.

Product Overview
Model: DS-96128NXI-S16R
Who This Is For
When large-scale camera deployment with data redundancy is the priority, the Hikvision DS-96128NXI-S16R is the recorder most integrators reach for. Built in a 3U rack chassis with 128 channels and 16 SATA drive bays with RAID support, this NVR is sized for enterprise sites where footage loss is not an acceptable outcome - think correctional facilities, large commercial campuses, transport hubs, hospitals, and multi-building industrial operations. With AcuSense AI processing built in, the recorder can separate genuine human and vehicle events from background noise across every connected channel, reducing the alarm volume that operators have to work through on large displays. If your project spec includes a rack room, a structured IP camera deployment above 32 channels, and a formal data protection requirement, this is the tier of recorder the job calls for.
What This NVR Actually Does
128-Channel Recording Capacity
Handles up to 128 simultaneous IP camera streams in a single recorder, eliminating the cost and complexity of stacking multiple mid-range units. One device, one management interface, one point of maintenance for very large camera deployments.
16-Bay RAID Storage
Sixteen internal SATA bays with RAID support means drives can fail without footage being lost. For sites with compliance, insurance, or evidentiary obligations, RAID is the difference between a manageable hardware fault and a serious incident.
AcuSense AI Analytics
On-board AcuSense processing filters motion events by classifying them as human or vehicle targets. Across 128 channels, this significantly cuts false alarm volume, making operator monitoring practical rather than overwhelming in large control rooms.
3U Rack-Mount Form Factor
Occupying just 3U of rack space, the DS-96128NXI-S16R fits into standard 19-inch rack cabinets found in dedicated security or IT rooms. The rack chassis also means straightforward integration alongside network switches, UPS units, and access control hardware.
High-Bandwidth Decoding
Built to handle the combined data throughput from high-resolution cameras across all 128 channels simultaneously. This prevents the frame drops and latency that occur when lower-tier recorders are pushed beyond their design limits with high-megapixel streams.
Enterprise Scalability
Designed to integrate into multi-site VMS platforms and enterprise monitoring environments. Supports remote access, centralised management, and connection to professional monitoring software - the infrastructure requirements expected at this scale of deployment.
Who Buys This Model
- Security integrators on government and institutional projects: Correctional facilities, councils, and hospitals often specify RAID-protected recorders at this channel count as a baseline requirement - the DS-96128NXI-S16R meets that spec in a single rack unit.
- Transport and logistics operators: Freight terminals, port facilities, and rail yards running 60-128 cameras across large footprints need a recorder that can handle the stream count without being split across multiple boxes and management interfaces.
- Large commercial and industrial site owners: Manufacturers, mining operations, and large retail centres who have outgrown 32 or 64 channel recorders and need to consolidate into a single high-capacity unit with formal data redundancy.
- Control room operators requiring AI-assisted monitoring: Sites with a staffed security control room benefit directly from AcuSense human and vehicle filtering - it reduces the alert noise operators deal with across a 128-camera display layout.
- IT and security teams managing rack infrastructure: Organisations with an existing rack room and structured cabling who want a recorder that physically and logically integrates with their network equipment rather than sitting on a shelf in a comms cupboard.
Honest Assessment
The DS-96128NXI-S16R does two things particularly well: it consolidates very large camera counts into a single managed recorder, and it protects recorded footage through RAID across 16 drive bays. For enterprise sites where both channel capacity and storage redundancy are non-negotiable requirements, this is a purpose-built solution rather than a scaled-up consumer product. The AcuSense analytics add genuine operational value at this scale - human and vehicle classification across 128 channels meaningfully reduces the workload on monitoring staff. This recorder is available through Security Australia as part of the enterprise Hikvision range. That said, this is not a product for small or medium deployments. The 3U rack chassis assumes a dedicated rack environment, and the cost and infrastructure overhead are only justified when the channel count genuinely approaches or exceeds what mid-range recorders can support. For deployments under 32 channels, a desktop or tower NVR will deliver the same recording capability at significantly lower cost and complexity.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The DS-96128NXI-S16R does not include built-in PoE switch ports - cameras connect via your existing network infrastructure. Plan your PoE switch capacity and uplink bandwidth before deployment. At 128 channels of high-resolution video, your network switches and upstream links need to be sized to handle the aggregate stream throughput, or you will encounter buffering and recording gaps regardless of the recorder's capability.
RAID Configuration Note: Hard drives are not included - this unit ships as a bare recorder. With 16 bays, plan your RAID mode (RAID 5, RAID 6, or RAID 10 depending on your redundancy and capacity requirements) before selecting drive count and size. RAID 6 is commonly specified for high-availability security environments as it tolerates 2 simultaneous drive failures without data loss.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying 65-128 IP cameras at a single site or campus and need a single recorder with a rack-mount chassis and RAID-protected storage to meet a formal data redundancy requirement.
- Good match if: Your site has a staffed control room and the monitoring team needs AcuSense human and vehicle filtering to make alarm management across a large camera count operationally practical.
- You may need a different model if: Your deployment is under 32 channels - a desktop or mid-range tower NVR will handle the recording load at a fraction of the cost and without the rack infrastructure requirement. Browse the Hikvision NVR range at securityaustralia.com.au for lower-channel options.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your deployment has 65-128 cameras, you have a rack room, and your site requires RAID-protected storage - no single mid-range recorder competes at this channel count with this level of data redundancy built in.
- You may need a different model if: Your camera count is under 32 channels - desktop or tower NVRs in the Hikvision range will record at the same quality level for considerably less cost and without the rack infrastructure overhead. Browse the full NVR range at securityaustralia.com.au.
- Pairs well with: Enterprise-grade managed PoE switches sized to your camera count, rackmount UPS units for power protection, and a high-capacity surveillance HDD set (8TB or larger per bay recommended for extended retention at this channel count).
Common Questions
-
Does the DS-96128NXI-S16R include PoE ports to power cameras directly?
No. The DS-96128NXI-S16R is a standalone network recorder without built-in PoE switch ports. Cameras connect via your existing network infrastructure - you will need separate managed PoE switches with sufficient port count and power budget to support your camera deployment. This is standard practice for enterprise-scale recorder deployments at this channel count. -
What RAID modes does this NVR support?
The DS-96128NXI-S16R supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 across its 16 SATA bays. For most enterprise security deployments, RAID 5 or RAID 6 is the practical choice - RAID 6 tolerates 2 simultaneous drive failures without data loss, which is the more conservative option for sites with compliance or evidentiary recording requirements where footage gaps carry real consequences. -
Will this NVR work with non-Hikvision cameras?
Yes, with limitations. The DS-96128NXI-S16R supports ONVIF-compatible IP cameras from third-party manufacturers. However, AI features including AcuSense human and vehicle classification operate at full capability with Hikvision cameras that support the feature. Third-party cameras connected via ONVIF will record normally but may not pass AI metadata to the recorder's analytics engine. -
How many hard drives do I need, and what capacity should I choose?
Hard drives are not included and must be purchased separately. The number and size depend on your camera resolution, frame rate, compression (H.265+ is strongly recommended at this scale), and required retention period. As a practical guide, a 128-camera system recording at 4MP in H.265+ at 15fps typically requires 8TB to 16TB per bay to achieve 30 days of retention - use Hikvision's online storage calculator to confirm your specific requirement before ordering drives. -
Does this recorder support integration with VMS software?
Yes. The DS-96128NXI-S16R integrates with Hikvision's iVMS-4200 client software and HikCentral Professional VMS platform, both suitable for multi-site enterprise deployments. It also supports third-party VMS platforms via ONVIF and RTSP, which is relevant for organisations with an existing VMS already deployed across other sites. Contact Security Australia if you need to confirm compatibility with a specific VMS platform before purchase. -
Can AcuSense analytics run across all 128 channels simultaneously?
Yes. AcuSense human and vehicle classification is processed on-board and applies across all connected channels. This is the key operational advantage at enterprise scale - alarm events are filtered by target type across the full camera count without requiring a separate analytics server or additional licensing per channel. -
What are the power and rack space requirements for this unit?
The DS-96128NXI-S16R occupies 3U of a standard 19-inch rack. Power draw increases significantly with 16 populated drive bays - plan your rack PDU and UPS capacity accounting for both the recorder and your populated drives under full load. A rackmount UPS with sufficient VA rating for the recorder and associated network switches is strongly recommended for enterprise deployments where recording continuity during power events is required.
