Product Overview

Model: DS-7608NI-M2/8P-NOHDD

Who This Is For

When clean PoE cabling and high-resolution recording are the priority, the DS-7608NI-M2/8P sits in a practical spot for installers specifying 8-channel systems for commercial sites, retail premises, small warehouses, and multi-tenancy buildings. The 8 built-in PoE ports handle power and data over a single Cat cable run per camera, keeping rack space and wiring costs lean. The recorder supports a maximum decode resolution of 8K via HDMI, which means it stays relevant as sites upgrade cameras over time rather than requiring an NVR swap. Two SATA bays accommodate dual HDDs for mirrored or expanded storage, and the 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth handles a full 8-channel load of high-resolution streams without bottlenecking. Supplied without a hard drive, this unit suits installers who want to specify their own drives based on retention requirements at the time of build.

What This NVR Actually Does

8-Port PoE, No Switch Required

All 8 PoE ports are built directly into the NVR, so cameras connect straight to the recorder over a single Cat5e or Cat6 run each. No separate PoE switch needed, which simplifies the rack and reduces failure points in the installation.

8K HDMI Output

The HDMI output supports up to 8K (7680 x 4320) resolution, meaning a compatible 8K or 4K display connected locally will render footage at full native quality. This matters for live monitoring walls where image detail is used for identification, not just detection.

H.265+ Compression

H.265+ reduces the file size of recorded video compared to older H.264 streams, which directly extends how many days of footage you can store on the same drives. On a multi-camera 4K system, the difference in retention days is significant without changing drive capacity.

Dual HDD Bay Flexibility

Two SATA interfaces allow installers to fit a single large drive or two drives configured for redundancy or expanded capacity. Supplied without HDDs, so the drive selection is matched to the site's retention policy and recording schedule at time of install.

128 Mbps Incoming Bandwidth

A 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth ceiling supports a full 8-channel load at high resolution without stream dropping. The 256 Mbps outgoing bandwidth handles simultaneous local display and remote viewing without degrading either feed.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security Installers: Specifying a clean, all-in-one 8-channel PoE head-end for commercial fit-outs where a separate PoE switch would add cost and rack space. The 8 built-in PoE ports cover a full camera count in a single 1U unit.
  • IT Managers at Multi-Site Businesses: Deploying standardised NVR hardware across retail outlets or office locations, selecting their own surveillance-grade HDDs to match each site's retention schedule rather than accepting bundled storage.
  • Small Warehouse and Logistics Operators: Running high-resolution cameras across loading docks, entry points, and internal areas where the 8K-capable HDMI output supports a local monitoring station with full-detail playback.
  • Facilities Managers Upgrading Ageing DVR Systems: Moving from analogue to IP on an 8-camera site and wanting an NVR that handles 4K and higher resolution cameras without needing an immediate swap if cameras are upgraded later.

Honest Assessment

The DS-7608NI-M2/8P does the core job of an 8-channel commercial NVR well. The integrated PoE ports remove the need for a separate switch, the 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth handles demanding multi-channel 4K streams, and H.265+ compression keeps storage requirements in check. The dual SATA bay gives installers drive flexibility, and the 8K HDMI output provides headroom for future camera upgrades without forcing an NVR replacement. Available through Security Australia, this unit suits straightforward 8-camera commercial and light-industrial installations where a compact 1U form factor matters. Where it will not suit: sites that need to grow beyond 8 channels should look at 16-channel or 32-channel NVR options. Sites requiring built-in RAID for critical data protection will find 2 bays limiting. It is also supplied without HDDs, so drive procurement is a separate step that must be planned before the site goes live.

Before You Buy

HDD Selection: This unit ships with no hard drives installed. Before deployment, calculate your storage requirement based on channel count, resolution, frame rate, compression type (H.265+), and required retention days. Surveillance-grade HDDs rated for 24/7 write cycles are strongly recommended over desktop drives - standard desktop drives have a significantly shorter service life under continuous write conditions. The 2 SATA bays support standard 3.5-inch SATA drives.

PoE Power Budget: Confirm the total PoE draw of your 8 connected cameras against the NVR's PoE power budget before finalising the camera selection. High-powered PTZ cameras or cameras with built-in heaters may exceed the per-port or total PoE budget. Check each camera's PoE class against the NVR's rated output to avoid under-powering devices on the far end of long cable runs.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are deploying exactly 8 IP cameras and want a single 1U unit that powers and records all channels without a separate PoE switch in the rack.
  • Good match if: Your site runs or plans to run 4K cameras and you need an NVR with sufficient incoming bandwidth (128 Mbps) and an 8K-capable HDMI output for a local monitoring display.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 8 camera channels now or in the near term - a 16-channel or 32-channel NVR from the Hikvision range would be the more appropriate product type to review.

Real-World Scenarios

Retail Store Upgrade

An 8-camera retail fit-out replacing an old DVR system. All 8 IP cameras cable directly into the NVR's PoE ports, no separate switch required. H.265+ compression stretches retention on a pair of surveillance-grade HDDs fitted at install.

Small Warehouse with Monitoring Station

A logistics operator runs 4K cameras across a loading dock and internal aisles. The 8K HDMI output feeds a large local display at a security desk, giving the site supervisor full-detail live view across all zones simultaneously.

Multi-Site Standardisation

A business with multiple branches standardises on the DS-7608NI-M2/8P across locations. Each site's IT manager installs their own drives sized to the site's retention policy. Remote access via secure login provides central oversight without on-site visits.

Compact Rack Installation

A commercial installation with a small communications cabinet uses the 1U form factor to keep the rack tidy. At 445 x 400 x 71 mm and under 5 kg without drives, the unit fits standard shallow rack enclosures common in smaller commercial builds.

Future-Proofed Camera Rollout

A site currently running 4MP cameras installs the DS-7608NI-M2/8P knowing the NVR supports up to 8K input. When cameras are upgraded to 4K or higher over time, the NVR handles the resolution increase without replacement.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need an 8-channel PoE NVR with built-in PnP ports, 4K and higher resolution support, and the flexibility to fit your own HDDs - all in a 1U rack unit without a separate switch.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site has more than 8 cameras now or is likely to expand - a 16-channel or 32-channel NVR would be the more appropriate product type to consider on securityaustralia.com.au.
  • Pairs well with: Hikvision 4K or 8MP IP turret, dome, or bullet cameras connected via Cat5e or Cat6 directly to the PoE ports, and a pair of surveillance-rated 3.5-inch SATA HDDs sized to your required retention period.

Common Questions

  1. Does this NVR come with hard drives included?

No. The DS-7608NI-M2/8P-NOHDD is supplied without any hard drives fitted. The unit has 2 SATA interfaces that accept standard 3.5-inch surveillance-grade HDDs. You will need to purchase drives separately and size them based on your channel count, resolution, frame rate, and required retention period before the system can record.
  2. Do I need a separate PoE switch to power cameras?

No. The NVR has 8 built-in PoE ports that power and connect cameras directly over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable run per camera. No external PoE switch is required for a standard 8-camera installation. This simplifies the head-end installation and reduces the number of powered devices in the cabinet.
  3. Will this NVR work with 4K cameras?

Yes. The DS-7608NI-M2/8P supports a maximum input resolution of 8K (7680 x 4320), so 4K cameras operate well within its capability. The 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth is sufficient to handle a full 8-channel load of 4K streams under H.265+ compression. The HDMI output also supports up to 8K for local display.
  4. What is the decoding capability of this NVR?

The NVR decodes 2 channels at 32 MP (30 fps) or 4 channels at 8 MP (30 fps). This spec defines what the NVR can render simultaneously on the local HDMI display at full frame rate. For sites running 4K (8 MP) cameras across all 8 channels, be aware that full live-view decoding at the highest resolution is constrained to 4 simultaneous streams at 30 fps.
  5. Can I access this NVR remotely from a phone or computer?

Yes. The NVR supports remote access via Hikvision's mobile and desktop client software, allowing live view and playback of recorded footage from a phone, tablet, or PC. Remote access requires the NVR to be connected to a network with appropriate port forwarding or cloud access configured during setup.
  6. Is this NVR compatible with non-Hikvision cameras?

Partially. The 8 built-in PoE ports use Hikvision's Plug-and-Play protocol, which is optimised for Hikvision IP cameras. Third-party cameras that support ONVIF Profile S can typically be added via the NVR's network interface, but advanced features such as smart event triggers and AI analytics are generally only available with compatible Hikvision cameras. For full feature access, pairing with Hikvision cameras is recommended. The full camera range compatible with this unit is stocked by Security Australia.
