Product Overview

Model: DS-K1T606MF

Who This Is For

When eliminating shared PINs and lost access cards is the priority, the DS-K1T606MF Face Recognition Terminal gives facilities managers and security integrators a wall-mounted reader that verifies identity in under a second. It suits commercial office buildings, financial institutions, childcare centres, and any controlled-entry area where tailgating or credential sharing is a genuine risk. The DS-K1T606MF stores up to 3,000 face profiles, 5,000 cards, and 5,000 fingerprints, so it covers multi-shift workforces without a separate server. Its IP65 rating means it installs at building entrances and covered outdoor thresholds as readily as internal lobbies. With onboard Wi-Fi plus Ethernet, existing network infrastructure is enough to get it onto a Hikvision access control platform - no specialist cabling runs required beyond the lock and power feed.

What This Product Actually Does

Deep Learning Face Recognition

The embedded deep learning algorithm processes face verification onboard in under 1 second at up to 99% accuracy. Verification happens at the terminal itself, so there is no round-trip to a server and no noticeable delay at a busy entry point during morning peak traffic.

Triple Authentication Modes

Face recognition, Mifare card, and optical fingerprint can each work independently or in combination. A two-factor requirement - face plus card, for example - raises the bar for high-security areas without replacing the hardware.

WDR Dual-Lens Camera

The 2MP wide-angle lens with WDR handles backlit lobby conditions - bright windows or open doorways behind the user - without washing out the face capture. Recognition operates between 0.3 m and 1 m from the terminal.

IP65 Indoor/Outdoor Rating

IP65 protection means dust ingress is fully blocked and the terminal withstands low-pressure water jets. It installs at covered building entrances, car park pedestrian gates, and outdoor kiosks operating across -20°C to +50°C without a protective enclosure.

100,000-Event Audit Log

The terminal stores up to 100,000 access events onboard. In stand-alone operation with no network connection, entry and exit records remain accessible locally - useful for compliance reporting, incident investigation, or sites with intermittent connectivity.

Flexible I/O for System Integration

RS-485, Wiegand input, 2 alarm inputs, 1 alarm output, doorbell output, and a lock relay are all built in. This allows the DS-K1T606MF to connect to third-party controllers, electric strikes, magnetic locks, and existing alarm panels without an add-on module.

Who Buys This Model

  • Commercial Building Managers: Office buildings running multi-tenant access control who need to eliminate shared PINs and issue face profiles instead of physical cards for a workforce of up to 3,000 users.
  • Financial Services Facilities Teams: Banks and financial offices requiring two-factor entry - face plus Mifare card - for server rooms, cash handling areas, or staff-only floors where credential sharing is a compliance risk.
  • Childcare and Education Administrators: Sites needing fast, contactless identity verification at a single controlled entry point where staff recognising every authorised adult is impractical across shift changes.
  • Security Integrators Retrofitting Existing Systems: Installers connecting to an existing Wiegand or RS-485 access controller who want to add biometric verification without replacing backend infrastructure.

Honest Assessment

The DS-K1T606MF does the job it is designed for well: fast onboard face verification with a confirmed 99% accuracy rate, triple authentication flexibility, and an IP65 housing that handles real entry-point conditions. The 5-inch touch screen is practical for enrolment and configuration without a laptop on-site, and the 100,000-event log means audit records survive a network outage. The Wiegand and RS-485 interfaces make it genuinely retrofit-friendly for sites with existing controllers.

Where it has limits: face recognition distance tops out at 1 m, so it is not suited to drive-through or vehicle-based identification - a dedicated ANPR or barrier system serves those scenarios better. The 3,000-face capacity is sufficient for a single building but will not scale to a large campus or multi-site enterprise deployment without centralised access control software. Available through Security Australia, this terminal suits single-door to small multi-door deployments rather than enterprise-wide rollouts.

Before You Buy

Power Supply Note: The DS-K1T606MF requires a 12VDC/2A centralized power supply - it does not accept PoE. Plan a dedicated 12V feed to the terminal location in addition to whatever cabling your lock and alarm inputs require. The lock output is a relay only; you will need to match it to the operating voltage of your electric strike or magnetic lock separately.

Mounting Height: Face recognition operates between 0.3 m and 1 m from the terminal lens. Mount the unit so the lens centre sits at approximately 1.1 m to 1.4 m above finished floor level to put the recognition zone at face height for the majority of adult users. Avoid positioning it directly facing a bright external window or low sun angle - the WDR sensor compensates but extreme direct backlight will reduce first-pass recognition rates.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are controlling a single entry point at a commercial office or financial premises and need contactless face verification for up to 3,000 enrolled users without relying on cards that can be shared or lost.
  • Good match if: You are retrofitting biometric access onto an existing Wiegand or RS-485 controller and need a terminal that connects directly without replacing backend hardware.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 3,000 face profiles, multi-door centralised management across a large campus, or vehicle-based identification at a boom gate - a dedicated access control server platform or ANPR system would be more suitable.

Real-World Scenarios

Office Building Lobby

A commercial tenancy replaces a PIN pad with the DS-K1T606MF. Staff are enrolled by face during onboarding. Access events log automatically, and the building manager can pull a 100,000-event audit trail for any HR or incident review without a separate software subscription.

Bank Staff Entry

A financial branch requires two-factor verification for the teller area. The terminal is configured to require both face recognition and Mifare card tap before releasing the lock relay - one device handles both factors without a second reader.

Childcare Centre Gate

Enrolled staff faces replace key fobs at a covered outdoor gate. The IP65 housing handles morning weather, and the -20°C to +50°C operating range covers Australian climate extremes across shift start times year-round.

Wiegand Controller Retrofit

An integrator adds biometric verification to a site with an existing third-party Wiegand access controller. The DS-K1T606MF connects directly via its Wiegand input, presenting verified credentials to the existing panel without replacing any backend hardware.

Standalone Remote Site

A utility substation or remote plant room uses the terminal in standalone mode. Face profiles and events are stored locally on the device. When the site network is restored, event logs sync - no access data is lost during connectivity gaps.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need onboard face verification with no server dependency, triple authentication modes, and IP65 outdoor capability in a single wall-mount unit for up to 3,000 users.
  • You may need a different model if: Your deployment exceeds 3,000 face profiles or spans multiple buildings requiring centralised user management - a networked access control platform with dedicated controller hardware would scale better.
  • Pairs well with: A Hikvision access control server or NVR with access control module for multi-door deployments, combined with an electric strike or magnetic lock rated to match the 12 VDC lock relay output.

Common Questions

  1. Does this terminal work without being connected to a network?

Yes. The DS-K1T606MF operates in standalone mode with no network connection required for day-to-day access control. Face profiles, cards, and fingerprints are stored and verified onboard, and up to 100,000 access events are logged locally. Network connectivity via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is needed for remote management, user enrolment via software, or event export - but door control functions independently of that connection.
  2. Will this terminal work with my existing access controller?

Yes, in most cases. The DS-K1T606MF includes both a Wiegand input and an RS-485 interface, which are the 2 most common protocols used by third-party access controllers. When connected via Wiegand, the terminal presents a verified credential to the existing panel as if it were a card read - the downstream controller makes the door decision. Check your existing controller's input type before installation to confirm which interface applies.
  3. What is the face recognition accuracy rate and how fast does it verify?

Hikvision specifies 99% accuracy at under 1 second per person for 1:N recognition. The deep learning algorithm processes the match onboard at the terminal, so verification speed is consistent regardless of network latency. Recognition operates at a distance of 0.3 m to 1 m from the terminal lens.
  4. Does the DS-K1T606MF support two-factor authentication?

Yes. Authentication modes - face, Mifare card, and optical fingerprint - can be combined to require two factors before releasing the lock output. For example, a site can require both a face match and a card tap for entry to a high-security area, using a single terminal rather than separate readers for each credential type.
  5. Can this terminal be installed outdoors?

Yes. The IP65 protection rating confirms the terminal is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets, and the operating temperature range of -20°C to +50°C covers outdoor conditions across Australian climates. It installs at covered building entrances, external pedestrian gates, and outdoor kiosks. Direct exposure to sustained rainfall without overhead protection is not recommended - a weather hood or soffit mounting location is advisable for fully exposed positions.
  6. Does this terminal use PoE?

No. The DS-K1T606MF requires a dedicated 12 VDC / 2 A centralized power supply - it does not accept Power over Ethernet. A separate low-voltage power cable must be run to the terminal location in addition to any network cable. If PoE-powered access terminals are a requirement for your installation, the Security Australia range includes alternative reader options worth comparing.
  7. How many users can be enrolled on the DS-K1T606MF?

The terminal stores up to 3,000 face profiles, 5,000 Mifare cards, and 5,000 fingerprints. These capacities are independent - a single user can have a face profile, a card, and a fingerprint enrolled simultaneously without affecting the capacity available for other credential types. For sites requiring more than 3,000 face profiles, a centralised access control platform that offloads profile storage to a server would be more appropriate.

Cabling Considerations

  • Power Cable: 12 VDC / 2 A centralized supply required - run a dedicated two-core cable from a local power supply unit to the terminal. Voltage drop over long runs can cause instability; keep the supply within 10 m of the terminal or upsize cable accordingly.
  • Network Cable: Standard Cat5e or Cat6 for Ethernet connectivity. Maximum recommended run is 100 m. Alternatively, the onboard Wi-Fi eliminates the Ethernet run entirely if the access point signal is adequate at the installation point.
  • Lock Output: The lock relay output drives the electric strike or magnetic lock directly - confirm the lock's operating voltage and current draw matches your 12 VDC supply. For high-current magnetic locks, a separate lock power supply with relay triggering from the terminal output is the correct approach.
  • RS-485 / Wiegand: Use shielded twisted-pair cable for RS-485 runs to minimise interference. Wiegand data lines (D0/D1) should be kept away from high-voltage runs and limited to manufacturer-specified distances for the connected controller - typically 150 m maximum.
  • Alarm Inputs: The 2 alarm inputs accept normally open or normally closed dry contact signals. Use standard 2-core alarm cable for connecting door contacts, PIR triggers, or other alarm devices to these inputs.
