Quick Buying Summary

Built as a compact PTZ network camera for flexible area monitoring, the DH-SD22404T-GN delivers 4MP resolution with 4x optical zoom across a 2.7mm-11mm focal range - covering wide scenes or pulling in detail without repositioning the camera. Starlight low-light performance, IK10 vandal resistance, and IP66 weatherproofing make it a strong fit for exposed outdoor installations. Powers via PoE, so no separate power run is required.

Why This Model

  • 4x optical zoom PTZ: Pan, tilt, and zoom let a single camera cover a large area and close in on a subject without the image degradation you get from digital zoom - useful for carparks, yards, or retail floors.
  • Starlight low-light sensitivity: A minimum illumination of 0.005 Lux (B/W) means the camera produces usable footage in near-darkness, reducing reliance on external lighting in poorly lit outdoor areas.
  • IK10 + IP66 build: Rated to withstand 55kg of impact force alongside dust and water ingress protection, so it holds up in exposed or high-risk locations where vandalism or weather are genuine concerns.

Product Overview

Model: DH-SD22404T-GN

Who This Is For

For site managers and integrators who need flexible optical zoom coverage without committing to multiple fixed cameras, the Dahua DH-SD22404T-GN delivers 4MP resolution across a 4x optical zoom range in a compact, IP66-rated PTZ housing. It suits medium-scale installations where a single camera must cover a wide entry zone at 112.5 degrees then tighten to 30 degrees for detail - think retail forecourts, school grounds, building entrances, and car park access points. The Starlight-grade low-light sensitivity (0.05 Lux colour) handles environments that drop well below standard lighting levels, making it a practical choice where ambient light is inconsistent but full IR illumination is not required. PoE support keeps the install clean, and IK10 vandal resistance adds a level of physical durability suited to semi-exposed mounting positions.

What This Camera Actually Does

4x Optical Zoom

The 2.7mm-11mm motorised lens shifts between a 112.5-degree wide view and a 30-degree telephoto view without any digital cropping or resolution loss. At 4MP, the zoomed-in image still has enough pixel density to read signage, identify faces, or capture plate-area detail at range.

Starlight Low-Light Sensitivity

A minimum colour illumination of 0.05 Lux at F1.6 means this camera retains colour in dimly lit scenes - covered walkways, underlit car parks, and dawn or dusk conditions - without switching to black-and-white or relying on IR LEDs, which are not fitted to this model.

120dB True WDR

High-contrast scenes such as a shaded entrance with direct sunlight behind subjects are handled by 120dB Wide Dynamic Range. Both the bright exterior and the shadowed foreground are rendered simultaneously, so subjects in the transition zone stay visible and usable in footage.

IVS Analytics

Built-in Intelligent Video Surveillance includes tripwire and face detection rules. Tripwire alerts trigger when a defined line is crossed in a set direction, reducing nuisance alerts compared to standard motion detection. These rules run on-camera with no additional server or NVR processing overhead required.

IP66 and IK10 Rated Housing

IP66 means the housing is fully sealed against dust and protected from strong water jets - adequate for outdoor mounting in Australian conditions. The IK10 impact rating certifies the camera can withstand up to 55kg of force, making it appropriate for semi-public mounting positions where physical interference is a risk.

H.265 Compression

H.265 encoding at up to 25/30fps in 4MP reduces the bandwidth and NVR storage demand substantially compared to H.264 at equivalent quality. For installations where NVR channel storage or network throughput is a planning constraint, this matters in day-to-day system performance over weeks of continuous recording.

Who Buys This Model

  • Retail and commercial integrators: Installing a single PTZ to cover a wide car park entry or forecourt, then zoom in to document a specific bay or vehicle - replacing 2 or 3 fixed cameras with one flexible position.
  • School and childcare facility managers: Monitoring large open areas such as playgrounds or drop-off zones where the wide-angle view covers general activity and operators can zoom to follow a specific area of concern.
  • Building and strata managers: Covering shared entry foyers, lobby approaches, or car park access ramps where a compact PTZ with IK10 vandal resistance fits a wall or column mount without the bulk of a full-size PTZ dome.
  • Small industrial sites: Sites needing a PTZ at a perimeter gate or loading dock entry where the operator can zoom to check a vehicle or person without dispatching staff - supported by on-camera tripwire analytics for after-hours alerting.

Honest Assessment

The DH-SD22404T-GN does several things well for a compact PTZ at this resolution. The 4MP sensor gives meaningful detail at telephoto, the 120dB WDR handles contrast-heavy entrances, and Starlight sensitivity at 0.05 Lux means the camera holds colour in low ambient light without IR. IK10 vandal resistance is a genuine specification confirmed by testing, not a marketing claim. H.265 at 25/30fps keeps storage requirements manageable across multi-channel NVR setups. It is supplied by Security Australia and integrates with Dahua-compatible NVRs via ONVIF for broader system compatibility. Where it will not perform: this camera has no IR illuminators, so in true darkness it will not produce a usable image without external lighting. It also carries a 4x zoom ratio, which suits medium-range applications - buyers needing long-range optical zoom (20x or greater) for large perimeters or wide open spaces should look at a larger PTZ dome instead.

Before You Buy

No IR Illumination: This model has no built-in IR LEDs. In environments where ambient light drops to near-zero after hours - unlit outdoor areas, car parks without overhead lighting - the camera will not produce a usable image. Plan for external lighting if the installation area has no reliable ambient light source. For sites where IR is essential, specify a PTZ model with built-in IR illumination instead.

PoE Budget Check: The DH-SD22404T-GN supports PoE. Confirm your switch or NVR PoE budget per-port before deploying - PTZ cameras with motorised lens mechanisms can draw more than a standard fixed IP camera. Check the camera's confirmed power draw against your switch's per-port wattage specification to avoid under-powered operation affecting pan/tilt response.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need a single camera to cover a wide zone (up to 112.5 degrees) and also zoom in optically to 30 degrees for detail - such as a school drop-off zone or retail car park entrance where one flexible view replaces multiple fixed cameras.
  • Good match if: The installation site has consistent ambient lighting (indoor with overhead lighting, or outdoor with existing flood or street lighting) where the 0.05 Lux Starlight sensitivity is sufficient and IR illumination is not required.
  • You may need a different model if: The site has unlit outdoor areas that go to near-zero light after hours - a PTZ dome with built-in IR illumination will serve that scenario far better, and Security Australia carries models with IR ranges suited to extended outdoor coverage.

Real-World Scenarios

School Drop-Off Zone

A single DH-SD22404T-GN mounted on a pole at the entrance covers the full driveway width in wide-angle, then operators zoom in optically to confirm a specific vehicle or child without switching cameras - useful during busy arrival and departure periods.

Retail Forecourt Entry

Mounted at a service station or retail car park entry, the camera uses 120dB WDR to handle the transition between harsh sunlight outside and the shaded canopy area, keeping faces and vehicle details visible simultaneously in the same frame.

After-Hours Perimeter Alerting

IVS tripwire rules set on a boundary line trigger alerts only when the line is crossed in the defined direction - reducing nuisance alerts at a small industrial site or warehouse gate where general movement from animals or vegetation otherwise causes false alarms.

Dimly Lit Covered Car Park

Where overhead fluorescent lighting is inconsistent across bays, Starlight sensitivity at 0.05 Lux F1.6 retains colour in areas other fixed cameras would render as grey-black. This works where some ambient light is present but is well below standard lighting thresholds.

Building Entrance Column Mount

The compact PTZ housing and IK10 rating make it suitable for mounting on a lobby column or external pillar where the camera may be within reach. The wide-to-zoom flexibility covers both the full lobby width and a close-up of the entry door from a single mount point.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a compact, PoE-powered PTZ with 4MP resolution, genuine IK10 vandal resistance, and Starlight low-light capability for a medium-range site where 4x optical zoom covers the required detail distance.
  • You may need a different model if: The installation requires long-range optical zoom (20x or greater) for wide open areas such as large perimeter fences, sports fields, or industrial yards - a higher-zoom PTZ dome will cover those distances more effectively.
  • Pairs well with: A Dahua-compatible PoE NVR with IVS support to make full use of on-camera tripwire analytics, local recording, and remote viewing via mobile app.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera work in complete darkness?

No. The DH-SD22404T-GN has no IR LEDs. It relies entirely on ambient light. At 0.005 Lux (B/W mode) it will produce an image in very low light, but in a fully unlit environment it will produce a black image. If the site has no ambient lighting after hours, specify a PTZ model with built-in IR illumination instead.
  2. Will this camera work with a non-Dahua NVR?

Yes, in most cases. The DH-SD22404T-GN supports ONVIF and PSIA standards, which allows integration with third-party NVRs that are compliant with those protocols. However, some advanced features - including full IVS analytics integration and PTZ control via NVR interface - may only function fully when paired with a Dahua-native NVR.
  3. What does the 4x optical zoom actually cover in practice?

At wide angle (2.7mm), the horizontal field of view is 112.5 degrees - broad enough to cover a driveway entry, a car park row, or a building frontage from a moderate distance. At full telephoto (11mm), the field narrows to 30 degrees, which allows the camera to read detail - signage, faces, or a vehicle area - at a useful range without digital quality loss. The transition is motorised and controlled via the NVR or PTZ controller.
  4. Does the tripwire function reduce false alerts compared to standard motion detection?

Yes. IVS tripwire only triggers when a subject crosses a defined line in the set direction, rather than responding to any movement in a zone. This significantly reduces alerts caused by swaying vegetation, lighting changes, or animals passing through the frame. The rule runs on the camera itself, so no additional NVR processing is required for the alert logic to function.
  5. What PoE standard does this camera require and does it need PoE+?

The confirmed specification states PoE support, but does not specify whether this model requires standard IEEE 802.3af (15.4W) or IEEE 802.3at PoE+ (30W). PTZ cameras with motorised lens mechanisms can draw more than a standard fixed camera. Before deploying, check the camera's power consumption specification in the Dahua datasheet and confirm your switch or NVR provides sufficient per-port wattage. Underpowering a PTZ can cause erratic pan/tilt behaviour or lens focus issues. The team at Security Australia can confirm the power draw requirement before you purchase.
  6. How does the pan-and-tilt range affect placement planning for this model?

The confirmed specification data for this model does not publish pan/tilt degree ranges in the available documentation. For PTZ placement planning purposes - including coverage arc calculations and whether the camera can achieve full 360-degree pan or has mechanical limits - consult the full Dahua datasheet for the DH-SD22404T-GN before confirming a mount position. This is particularly important if you are relying on the camera to cover a wide sweep from a single fixed point rather than monitoring a defined forward zone.
  7. Is H.265 recording compatible with older Dahua NVRs?

Not always. H.265 requires the NVR to support H.265 decoding on the relevant channels. Older Dahua NVR models may only support H.264. If you are adding this camera to an existing system, check that your NVR firmware and hardware support H.265 on the channel you plan to assign it to. If not, the camera can fall back to H.264 encoding, but you will lose the bandwidth and storage efficiency benefit that H.265 provides.
