Product Overview
Model: DH-PFM906
Who This Is For
When diagnosing a mixed-technology site without pulling multiple tools out of the van is the priority, the Dahua DH-PFM906 Integrated Mount Tester is built for exactly that situation. Security installers commissioning or fault-finding systems that combine IP cameras, HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS, and SDI feeds previously needed separate testers, cable certifiers, and PoE meters. The PFM906 consolidates those functions into a single handheld unit with a 7-inch 1920x1200 IPS touchscreen. It suits technicians working across diverse site types - from small business IP retrofits to large HDCVI installations at commercial facilities - where rapid camera bring-up, PoE verification, TDR cable fault location, and PTZ protocol testing all happen on the same job. The IP54 rating and 37Wh battery backing 10 hours of field use make it a practical daily-carry tool rather than a bench instrument.
What This Tester Actually Does
Multi-Format Video Testing
View and verify IP (ONVIF), HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS, and SDI camera feeds on a single 7-inch 1920x1200 screen. No format switching between separate devices - connect the BNC or RJ45 and confirm the image is clean before the ladder comes down.
PoE Power Delivery and Measurement
The PSE port supplies PoE to cameras during testing, while the PD port measures incoming PoE power from a switch. This lets installers confirm both that a camera powers up correctly and that a switch port is delivering the expected wattage - two checks in one connection.
TDR Cable Fault Location
Time-domain reflectometry testing covers both network cable and coaxial cable, pinpointing the distance to a break or fault. On a long conduit run with no visible damage, TDR identifies whether to pull the cable or simply re-terminate the end - saving significant diagnostic time.
PTZ Protocol Control
RS485 output supports more than 30 PTZ protocols including PELCO-D, PELCO-P, Samsung, and Panasonic, across baud rates from 600 to 115200bps. Commissioning or fault-checking an analog PTZ drive no longer requires carrying a separate RS485 tester or laptop with serial software.
Optical Power Meter and VFL
The dedicated OPM port measures fibre optical power levels, while the VFL (visual fault locator) port helps identify breaks and bad connectors in fibre runs. For sites with fibre backhaul segments, both checks can be done from the same handheld without a separate fibre toolkit.
Dahua-Specific Camera Integration
Beyond standard ONVIF, the PFM906 includes a dedicated Dahua test tool that can modify IP address, username, and password parameters directly on Dahua cameras. This streamlines initial camera configuration on Dahua installations without needing a laptop and Config Tool on site.
Who Buys This Model
- CCTV Installers on Mixed-Technology Sites: Technicians commissioning sites with both IP and legacy analog cameras who need a single device that handles ONVIF auto-scan, HDCVI/AHD/TVI display, and SDI verification without swapping tools between camera types.
- Dahua Accredited Technicians: Installers regularly deploying Dahua IP and HDCVI systems who benefit from the dedicated Dahua camera test tool for IP modification and image verification directly from the tester.
- Service and Maintenance Technicians: Field teams responding to fault calls on existing installations who need TDR cable fault location, PoE measurement, digital multi-meter function, and optical power testing all from one battery-powered unit that runs 10 hours between charges.
- Installers Working on Fibre-Backhaul Sites: Technicians commissioning cameras fed via fibre who need on-site optical power meter readings and visual fault location without a separate fibre test kit adding weight and cost to the tool bag.
- PTZ Commissioning Specialists: Installers setting up or fault-tracing RS485-controlled analog PTZ cameras across mixed protocol environments, where on-device support for 30-plus protocols and adjustable baud rates up to 115200bps eliminates the need for a dedicated RS485 configuration tool.
Honest Assessment
The DH-PFM906 genuinely consolidates what would otherwise be 5 or 6 separate instruments - PoE tester, cable fault locator, optical power meter, multi-meter, PTZ controller, and camera viewer - into one IP54-rated handheld with a practical 10-hour battery. The 7-inch 1920x1200 touchscreen is large enough to assess image quality in the field rather than guessing, and broad format support across IP, HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS, and SDI makes it relevant for mixed-generation sites that many installers encounter daily. The Dahua-specific test tool adds real workflow value for Dahua-focused installers in particular, and this tester is available through Security Australia. Where it has limits: it is not a network certification tool to the standard of a Fluke or similar certifier, so it will not produce certification reports for structured cabling handover documentation. Installers who need formal cable certification for building compliance purposes will still require a dedicated certifier alongside this unit.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The PFM906 has 3 separate RJ45 ports with distinct roles - LAN/PSE (supplies PoE to a camera under test), PD (connects to a PoE switch to measure incoming power), and UTP/Scan (cable hunting and UTP testing). Using the wrong port during PoE testing is a common first-use error. Confirm which port you are connecting before applying power to avoid incorrect readings or unexpected power on the line.
TDR Accuracy Note: TDR distance readings on the PFM906 depend on accurate NVP (nominal velocity of propagation) entry for the cable under test. Using the default NVP value for a cable type that differs from what is installed will produce inaccurate fault distance results. Check the cable manufacturer's datasheet for the correct NVP value before running a TDR test on an unfamiliar cable brand.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You install or service mixed-format CCTV systems regularly and need IP, HDCVI, AHD, TVI, CVBS, SDI testing plus PoE verification, TDR cable fault location, RS485 PTZ control, and optical power measurement from a single battery-powered unit on every job.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is formal structured cabling certification producing compliance reports - a dedicated cable certifier to certification standards is better suited to that documentation requirement.
- Pairs well with: A PoE network switch, IP cameras, or HDCVI camera and recorder systems during commissioning - the tester acts as the verification step between cable termination and final NVR connection.
Common Questions
-
Will this tester work with cameras from brands other than Dahua?
Yes. The PFM906 supports ONVIF, which means it will auto-scan, log in, and display the image from any ONVIF-compliant IP camera regardless of brand. The dedicated Dahua test tool functionality - such as direct IP and credential modification - applies to Dahua cameras specifically, but standard ONVIF viewing and PTZ control work across compatible cameras from other manufacturers. -
Does this tester supply PoE to a camera, or does it only measure PoE from a switch?
Both. The LAN/PSE port on the PFM906 supplies PoE power to a camera so it can be tested and viewed without a switch present on site. The PD port connects to an existing PoE switch port to measure the power that switch is delivering. These are physically separate ports on the device - using the correct port for each function is important for accurate results. -
How does the TDR cable fault location work in practice, and does it cover both Cat cable and coax?
Yes, TDR on the PFM906 covers both network (Cat) cable and coaxial cable. Time-domain reflectometry sends a signal pulse along the cable and measures the time for a reflection to return from a fault or break. The device calculates distance based on that timing and the cable's nominal velocity of propagation (NVP). For accurate results, the NVP value for the specific cable type installed needs to be entered correctly - the default may not match all cable brands. The dedicated TDR port is separate from the network and BNC ports. -
What RS485 PTZ protocols does the PFM906 support, and how is baud rate configured?
The PFM906 supports more than 30 RS485 PTZ protocols including PELCO-D, PELCO-P, Samsung, and Panasonic. Baud rate is configurable between 600 and 115200 bps to match the target PTZ drive's requirements. This is controlled through the PTZ testing interface on the touchscreen. The RS485 port is a dedicated function port on the unit - it is separate from the network and BNC connections and carries no PoE or video signal. Stocked by Security Australia, this makes the PFM906 particularly useful for sites mixing modern IP cameras with legacy RS485-controlled analog PTZ units. -
Will this tester display 4K camera streams from the main stream, or only a sub-stream?
Main stream. The PFM906 specifies that it displays the image from a 4K camera via the main stream, supported by its 4K H.265 decoding capability. This is significant for installation because viewing a sub-stream at reduced resolution can mask image quality or focus issues that only appear at full resolution - particularly relevant when aligning a 4K varifocal camera where fine detail in the image confirms correct focus. -
Does the PFM906 have audio testing capability?
Yes. The PFM906 includes both an audio input port and an audio output port, enabling two-way audio testing during camera commissioning. This allows installers to confirm that a camera's audio feed is working before installation is finalised, without needing to connect to an NVR or VMS to verify the audio channel. -
What does the optical power meter function actually measure on this tester?
The OPM port on the PFM906 measures received optical power on a fibre cable in dBm. This is used during fibre link commissioning to verify that the signal level at the receiving end falls within the acceptable power range for the connected SFP module or media converter. The VFL (visual fault locator) port emits a visible red light into a fibre run to identify breaks, bad splices, or bent fibres visually. Neither function is a full fibre certification tool - they are commissioning and fault-finding aids suitable for typical CCTV fibre backhaul segments.
