Product Overview

Model: DH-IPC-HFW2831TP-ZAS-27135-S2

Who This Is For

For installers and security managers who need to cover variable-distance approaches without committing to a fixed lens angle, the Dahua DH-IPC-HFW2831TP-ZAS-27135-S2 offers a motorized 2.7-13.5mm zoom range that can be dialled in after the camera is physically mounted. That flexibility makes it well suited to commercial car parks, loading docks, perimeter fences, and long driveway runs where the exact field of view is difficult to determine from a plan alone. The 8MP 4K sensor resolves enough detail at the wide end to read plates or identify faces, while the 80m IR range keeps scenes visible through the full reach of the lens at night. Starlight low-light performance down to 0.01 Lux means the camera holds usable colour detail in low-ambient conditions before switching to IR. IP67 weather sealing suits exposed outdoor positions, and dual power options - PoE or 12V DC - give installers flexibility where PoE infrastructure is not already in place.

What This Camera Actually Does

Motorized 2.7-13.5mm Zoom

The motorized varifocal lens can be adjusted remotely through the NVR or web interface after mounting, so you can fine-tune the field of view without ladders or manual lens adjustment. This is the feature that separates this model from fixed-lens bullet cameras on installations where coverage distances are uncertain.

8MP 4K Resolution

At 3840x2160 the sensor captures enough detail to digitally zoom into recorded footage and still identify individuals or read signage. For wide-angle positions at the 2.7mm end, the resolution provides a large usable crop - useful when reviewing incidents after the fact.

80m IR Night Vision

The built-in IR LED throws 80 metres of infrared illumination, meaning the camera can still record useful footage across a long approach road or yard even in complete darkness. The Starlight sensor (0.01 Lux minimum illumination) extends usable colour performance before the IR cuts in.

Wide Dynamic Range

WDR handles scenes where bright sunlight and deep shadow exist in the same frame - common at gate entries, roller door openings, or car parks with direct overhead sun. The sensor balances both zones simultaneously rather than overexposing one to correctly expose the other.

Tripwire and Intrusion Detection

Onboard smart analytics let you define a virtual line or zone within the camera's view. When crossed or entered, an alert is triggered - useful for perimeter monitoring where motion detection alone generates too many false alerts from passing traffic or vegetation movement.

H.265 Compression with Smart Coding

H.265 at 8MP produces significantly smaller file sizes than H.264 at the same quality level. Smart H.265 goes further by applying higher compression to static background areas, which reduces storage and bandwidth consumption on multi-camera NVR installations without dropping detail in areas of movement.

Who Buys This Model

  • Commercial property managers: Specifying cameras for car parks, gate entries, and loading dock approaches where the correct zoom angle cannot be locked in from plans alone - the motorized 2.7-13.5mm lens solves this without a callback visit.
  • Industrial site security teams: Replacing ageing analogue bullet cameras on long perimeter runs - the 80m IR range and IP67 rating match the physical demands of exposed outdoor positions at warehouses and logistics yards.
  • Electrical contractors on commercial fitouts: Running structured cabling where a single Cat6 PoE drop is already planned - this model accepts PoE or 12V DC, which avoids having to run separate power where PoE switches are not already in the rack.
  • Installers specifying edge storage: Deployments at remote sites or sub-branches where continuous NVR recording is not viable - the 256GB Micro SD slot allows standalone local storage as a backup or primary recording method.

Honest Assessment

The DH-IPC-HFW2831TP-ZAS-27135-S2 delivers genuinely useful flexibility for outdoor commercial installs. The motorized zoom is the headline: being able to adjust coverage remotely after mounting removes a common frustration with fixed-lens bullets on long or variable approaches. 8MP resolution at this price tier gives forensic detail that 4MP or 5MP alternatives cannot match at the same zoom reach, and the 80m IR range covers distances relevant to most real industrial and commercial applications. The Starlight sensor holds colour in low-ambient conditions, which extends useful footage before the image becomes monochrome. Where this camera has limits: it is a Lite-series product, so its smart analytics are video-based rather than AI-classified - expect more manual fine-tuning of tripwire and intrusion zones to reduce false alerts compared to AI-powered alternatives. It also does not offer active deterrence (no siren or white-light strobe). Buyers needing real-time intruder response should review TiOC or active deterrence models available through Security Australia.

Before You Buy

Installer Note: The motorized zoom on this model is electrically driven via the NVR or web interface - confirm your NVR supports remote focus/zoom control for Dahua IPC series before relying on remote adjustment. If using a third-party NVR over ONVIF, you may need to use the camera's web interface directly for initial zoom and focus setup. Also note the IK10 vandal rating is listed as optional on this variant - confirm the supplied unit includes the IK10 housing if impact resistance is a specification requirement for the site.

Storage Planning: At 4K (3840x2160) this camera records at 15fps maximum. If your NVR profile is set to 4K, factor the lower frame rate into your motion review workflow - fast-moving subjects across a wide scene can appear slightly choppy. Dropping to the 2688x1520 sub-stream at 25/30fps resolves this while still retaining 4MP-level detail, which is a practical compromise for most commercial applications.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are covering a long driveway, loading dock, or perimeter fence line where the final zoom angle needs to be confirmed on-site rather than from a plan - the motorized 2.7-13.5mm range allows remote adjustment post-install without a return visit.
  • Good match if: The installation site has existing 12V DC cabling infrastructure or you are adding to a PoE switch - dual power input means this camera fits into either setup without additional power conversion hardware.
  • You may need a different model if: Your brief calls for active intruder deterrence with automatic strobe and audio warnings on detection - a TiOC or active deterrence bullet camera type will serve that requirement where this model will not.

Real-World Scenarios

Industrial Gate Entry

Mounted on a boom gate post covering a long vehicle approach. The motorized zoom lets the installer tighten the field of view from 2.7mm wide-angle to a narrower focal length that fills the frame with the vehicle at recognition distance - all adjusted remotely once the camera is wired in.

Loading Dock After Hours

Covering a large loading bay that has low-level perimeter lighting but is not fully dark. The Starlight sensor holds colour footage at 0.01 Lux, so dock activity remains identifiable before the scene drops to full IR monochrome - useful for after-hours access reviews.

Open Car Park Perimeter

Mounted at the far end of an open car park, covering the full length of the space. WDR manages the contrast between the brightly lit exit and shadowed vehicle rows. An intrusion zone drawn across the pedestrian path triggers alerts for after-hours movement without firing on road traffic outside.

Remote Sub-Site Without NVR

Deployed at a remote pump station or unmanned substation with no rack infrastructure on-site. A 256GB Micro SD card handles local recording. Alarm outputs connect to existing site alarm panels. PoE or 12V DC power supply matches whatever the site already provides.

Fence Line at Night

Mounted on a pole covering 60-70m of perimeter fencing at an industrial site. The 80m IR range illuminates the full fence run from a single mount point. A tripwire detection line set along the fence boundary generates an alert when the line is crossed rather than flagging every movement in the wider frame.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need 8MP resolution with a motorized zoom range on an outdoor bullet form factor - the 2.7-13.5mm span covers far more installation scenarios than a fixed-lens bullet without requiring a lens swap or return visit.
  • You may need a different model if: The site requires real-time active deterrence - a TiOC bullet or active deterrence bullet camera type adds a white light strobe and audio alarm triggered on detection, which this Lite-series model does not offer.
  • Pairs well with: A Dahua-compatible PoE NVR with remote focus and zoom control enabled, or a PoE switch feeding into a standalone NVR for multi-camera commercial deployments.

Common Questions

  1. Can I adjust the zoom angle after the camera is mounted?

Yes. The motorized varifocal lens covers 2.7mm to 13.5mm and can be adjusted remotely through a compatible Dahua NVR or directly via the camera's web interface once it is installed and connected. This means you do not need physical access to the lens housing after mounting - a significant time saving on elevated or hard-to-reach positions.
  2. Will this camera work on a standard PoE switch?

Yes. This camera supports PoE (IEEE 802.3af standard), which is compatible with the majority of commercial PoE switches and PoE NVRs. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the camera. It also accepts a 12V DC power feed if PoE is not available at the install location.
  3. Does this camera record in 4K at 25fps?

No. The 4K resolution (3840x2160) streams at a maximum of 15fps on this sensor. If you require 25fps or 30fps, the camera steps down to 2688x1520 (approximately 4MP), which still delivers significantly more detail than a standard 2MP camera and covers most commercial identification requirements.
  4. How does the Starlight feature actually differ from standard night vision?

Starlight refers to the sensor's low-light colour performance - in this case, a minimum illumination of 0.01 Lux at F1.6. In practical terms, the camera holds colour imagery in near-dark conditions such as moonlit yards or sites with minimal ambient lighting, rather than dropping to monochrome IR immediately. IR remains available and engages when ambient light falls below that threshold.
  5. Does this camera work without being connected to an NVR?

Yes, in a limited capacity. The camera supports Micro SD recording up to 256GB, which allows standalone local recording without an NVR. Alarm outputs (1 in/1 out) allow it to integrate with existing site alarm infrastructure. For remote viewing without an NVR, it can be accessed via web browser or a compatible mobile app using the camera's direct IP address, provided the network is configured appropriately. This model is available through Security Australia as a standalone unit or as part of a broader system build.
  6. Is the IK10 vandal rating standard on this model or an optional variant?

IK10 is listed as optional on this variant. Confirm with your supplier whether the unit shipped includes the IK10-rated housing. If impact resistance is a hard specification requirement - for example, in public-access areas or locations exposed to deliberate interference - verify this before purchase rather than assuming the rating is included as standard.
  7. How does the smart analytics on this camera differ from AI-based detection?

This is a Lite-series camera, which means its tripwire and intrusion detection are video-analytics-based rather than deep-learning AI classification. It analyses pixel motion within defined zones rather than classifying objects as human or vehicle. This works well when zones are configured carefully, but it requires more on-site tuning to reduce false alerts from wind, lighting changes, or animals compared to AI-powered Pro or AI series models that filter by object type.
