Product Overview
Model: DH-IPC-HFW2831SP-S-0280B-S2
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying cameras for driveways, car parks, entry gates, and building perimeters will find the Dahua HFW2831SP a straightforward 8MP mini bullet that covers a lot of ground without overcomplicating the install. The 2.8mm fixed lens gives a wide view angle suited to shorter approaches and open areas where you want broad coverage rather than long-range zoom. At 8MP, recorded footage holds up well when you need to zoom in on a frame after the fact - licence plates at the gate, faces at the entry, activity across a loading bay. The IK10 impact rating and IP67 weather sealing make it a genuine outdoor camera, not just a camera with a weather sticker on it. PoE or 12V DC power keeps cabling options flexible. A practical, no-frills bullet for standard outdoor monitoring positions where image detail and reliability across weather conditions are the main requirements.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP Image Resolution
Records at up to 3840x2160 at 15fps or 2688x1520 at 25/30fps. The higher pixel count means you can crop into recorded footage without losing the detail you need - useful when reviewing vehicle entry or identifying individuals from a wide-angle shot.
30m Infrared Night Vision
Built-in IR LEDs illuminate the scene out to 30 metres in complete darkness. No ambient lighting needed. Designed for driveways, entry paths, and outdoor areas where lighting can't be relied on after dark.
Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)
WDR balances bright and dark areas within the same frame - entry points with direct sunlight, bright headlights against a dark background, or doorways with interior lighting behind the subject. Reduces washed-out or silhouetted footage in high-contrast scenes.
Tripwire and Intrusion Detection
Configurable perimeter rules that trigger alerts when a virtual line is crossed or a defined zone is entered. More targeted than basic motion detection - useful for after-hours monitoring of yards, gates, or restricted areas where any crossing should generate an alert.
Smart H.265+ Compression
Smart H.265+ reduces the bandwidth and storage an 8MP stream would otherwise demand. Compared to standard H.265, it lowers bitrate during low-activity periods while maintaining quality when motion occurs - extending how far your NVR storage goes before overwriting.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial property managers: Specifying fixed outdoor cameras for car parks, entry gates, and building perimeters where 8MP resolution and IP67 weather sealing are baseline requirements.
- Small business owners: Running warehouses, trade yards, or retail sites who need a reliable bullet camera that covers a wide outdoor area and holds up to physical interference - backed by the IK10 impact rating.
- Security installers: Building multi-camera systems on Dahua NVRs who need a cost-effective 8MP outdoor bullet with PoE support, Smart H.265+ compression, and onboard SD card capability for edge storage redundancy.
- Industrial and logistics sites: Monitoring loading docks and yard access points where the combination of 30m IR, intrusion detection rules, and a compact vandal-resistant housing suits the environment.
Honest Assessment
This camera does the core job well: 8MP outdoor coverage with genuine IP67 and IK10 protection, 30m IR for after-dark monitoring, and perimeter detection rules that go beyond basic motion alerts. Smart H.265+ keeps storage manageable on an 8MP stream, and the dual power input - PoE or 12V DC - gives installers flexibility. The built-in microphone captures on-site audio, though there is no built-in speaker, so one-way audio capture only. The 2.8mm fixed lens is wide, which suits open areas and entry points but is not the right choice if you need to identify detail at distances beyond 8-10 metres - a longer focal length lens or a different model would serve that better. It also does not offer colour night vision; IR night footage is greyscale. If full-colour low-light capture is a priority, a TiOC or full-colour model available through Security Australia would be more appropriate. For standard perimeter and entry coverage, this is a well-specified, weather-hardened 8MP bullet at a practical price point.
Before You Buy
Lens and Distance: The 2.8mm fixed lens on this camera produces a wide field of view, which is ideal for covering open areas, driveways, and entry points at close to medium range. If your monitoring distance is beyond roughly 8-10 metres and detail on faces or plates is critical, consider a 4mm or 6mm focal length variant for a tighter, more usable image at range.
Storage Planning: An 8MP stream at 25fps is data-heavy even with Smart H.265+. If you are running multiple cameras of this type, confirm your NVR has sufficient storage headroom before install. The onboard micro SD card slot (up to 256GB) can serve as edge storage backup but is not a substitute for NVR-based recording in a commercial install.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are mounting on an external wall or eave to cover a driveway, car park, or entry point at short to medium range, and need an IP67/IK10 rated camera that holds up to weather and physical contact.
- Good match if: Your NVR system is Dahua-based and you want Smart H.265+ compression across your camera fleet to reduce storage consumption without stepping down from 8MP resolution.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires colour night vision, long-range IR beyond 30 metres, or optical zoom for detail at extended distances - in those cases a full-colour bullet or motorised zoom camera type would be a better fit.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need an IK10/IP67 outdoor bullet at 8MP with PoE or 12V DC flexibility, onboard audio capture, and perimeter detection rules at a price point suited to multi-camera installs.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires colour night vision (greyscale IR only on this model), IR range beyond 30 metres, or optical zoom for identifying detail at long distances - a full-colour bullet or long-range IR bullet type would be more appropriate.
- Pairs well with: A Dahua PoE NVR with Smart H.265+ decoding support, matched to the number of camera positions on your site for clean channel planning and storage efficiency.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera work with PoE switches and NVRs?
Yes. The HFW2831SP supports IEEE 802.3af PoE, so a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data from a compatible PoE switch or NVR PoE port. You can also run it on 12V DC if that suits your install better. No separate power run required when using PoE. -
Will this camera record in colour at night?
No. Night vision on this model is infrared-based, which produces greyscale footage after dark. The built-in IR LEDs illuminate the scene to 30 metres without any ambient light, but colour is not retained at night. If colour night vision is a requirement, a full-colour or TiOC camera type is the right category to look at. -
What does the IK10 rating actually mean for this camera?
IK10 is the highest impact protection rating under the IEC 62262 standard, indicating the housing can withstand an impact of up to 20 joules. In practical terms, it means the camera enclosure is resistant to deliberate strikes with a blunt object. This rating is relevant for sites where tampering or accidental contact with equipment is a real risk. -
How does the tripwire and intrusion detection work on this camera?
Both functions are configured through the camera's interface or a connected Dahua NVR. Tripwire triggers an alert when a defined virtual line is crossed in a specified direction. Intrusion detection triggers when movement is detected within a defined zone. These rules run on the camera itself, so alerts can be generated even if your NVR is temporarily offline, provided SD card storage or direct notification is configured. -
Does this camera support two-way audio?
No. This camera includes a built-in microphone for one-way audio capture, but does not have a built-in speaker. You can record and listen to on-site audio, but you cannot push audio back through this camera. If two-way audio is required, you would need a camera model with both a built-in microphone and built-in speaker confirmed in its specifications. The Security Australia range includes models with this capability. -
How much storage does an 8MP stream actually use?
More than a 4MP or 5MP camera, even with Smart H.265+ active. Bitrate varies with scene activity, but as a general guide, plan for roughly 40-80GB per camera per day at moderate activity levels without aggressive bitrate capping. The onboard SD card (up to 256GB) offers a few days of local redundancy, but NVR-based planning with adequate drive capacity is recommended for any continuous recording setup.
