Product Overview

Model: DH-IPC-HDW2549EMP-S-PRO-ANZ

Who This Is For

Small business owners and residential installers who need consistent colour footage after dark will find the Dahua WizColor 5MP Eyeball Network Camera a practical fit for eave, soffit, and wall-mount positions. The WizColor technology uses a warm supplemental light to produce colour images in low-light conditions rather than switching to monochrome infrared, which matters in scenarios where colour detail - clothing, vehicle colour, signage - is needed for review or incident reporting. The HDW eyeball housing suits standard single-gang back boxes or surface mounts and allows the lens to be re-angled after installation without repositioning the entire camera. At 5MP, the resolution gives enough detail to cover a driveway, car park entry, retail shopfront, or side path without excessive bandwidth overhead. This model is the Australian and New Zealand variant, specced and warranted for local distribution.

What This Camera Actually Does

Full-Colour Night Imaging

WizColor uses a warm supplemental light source to produce colour video in darkness rather than falling back to black-and-white IR. In practice, this means footage retains clothing colour, vehicle colour, and skin tone detail that standard IR cameras lose the moment the lights go out.

5MP Resolution

At 5 megapixels, this camera captures noticeably more detail than a 2MP or 4MP unit without the storage demands of an 8MP sensor. Useful for covering wider scenes - a driveway plus the footpath beyond, or a retail counter with a wider entry area - while keeping NVR channel storage manageable.

Eyeball Housing Flexibility

The HDW turret-style housing lets you rotate and tilt the lens independently of the mount. If the camera ends up slightly off-centre after installation, you can correct the aim without re-drilling or repositioning the base plate - a practical advantage on eave corners and narrow soffit runs.

PoE Network Connection

Power and video travel over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable, eliminating the need for a separate power run to each camera position. On a PoE NVR or PoE switch, each camera is independently powered and individually powered-off for maintenance without interrupting other channels.

Outdoor-Rated Weatherproofing

The IP67 rating means this camera handles direct rain, dust ingress, and the humidity cycles common in Australian coastal and subtropical climates. Suitable for exposed eave positions, undercover car parks with wind-driven rain, and external building corners without additional protective housing.

Who Buys This Model

  • Retail shop owners: Installing at front-of-store or cash register positions where colour footage of clothing and bag colour is needed for incident review rather than just motion detection.
  • Residential installers: Running eave-mount cameras on homes where the client has had problems with IR cameras producing washed-out black-and-white footage of driveway activity after dark.
  • Small office managers: Covering car park entries or building access points on a small PoE NVR system where a single cable run per camera position is the preferred install method.
  • Strata and property managers: Specifying cameras at common-area entry points, letterbox banks, or ground-floor corridors where full-colour overnight footage adds evidentiary value for body corporate disputes.

Honest Assessment

The DH-IPC-HDW2549EMP-S-PRO-ANZ does one thing notably well: it maintains colour video in genuinely dark conditions using the WizColor warm-light system. For applications where colour identification is the primary requirement after dark - retail, residential driveways, car parks - this is a meaningful advantage over conventional IR cameras. The 5MP sensor adds enough resolution to cover wider scenes while remaining manageable on standard NVR storage configurations. The eyeball housing suits most eave and soffit mounting situations without needing an adapter bracket. Where this camera is not the right call: if the installation site has sensitivity to any supplemental light (bedrooms adjacent to camera positions, wildlife corridors, or locations where a visible glow at night would be unwanted), a standard IR turret would be less intrusive. Similarly, for long-range approaches beyond 20-25 metres or demanding industrial perimeter applications, a bullet camera with extended IR is a better fit. Available through Security Australia with Australian and New Zealand warranty coverage.

Before You Buy

Light Spill Awareness: WizColor's warm supplemental LEDs produce a visible amber glow at night. Before mounting, confirm the camera's aim does not direct that light into a bedroom window or onto a neighbouring property boundary. On tight eave positions where the lens will point steeply downward, the light spill is minimal, but on shallow-angle wall mounts covering long driveways the glow will be noticeable at 10-15 metres.

Cable Run Planning: This camera runs on standard IEEE 802.3af PoE. Confirm your NVR or PoE switch port output matches - no PoE+ or PoE++ is required. Maximum Cat5e or Cat6 run is 100 metres per leg. If your run approaches or exceeds 80 metres, test link stability before finalising camera placement to avoid signal degradation at the far end.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need colour footage in low-light or no-light outdoor conditions and the camera position is on an eave, soffit, or wall where a small warm-light glow at night is acceptable.
  • Good match if: You are running a PoE NVR system and want a single cable per camera position with 5MP resolution across residential or small commercial sites.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires surveillance over approaches longer than 25 metres in total darkness - a bullet camera with extended IR range will cover greater distances more effectively, and Security Australia stocks several long-range options in the Dahua range.

Real-World Scenarios

Retail Shopfront After Hours

A camera mounted above the entry door captures colour footage of clothing and bag details on anyone approaching after close. WizColor produces identifiable colour images even when the street lighting switches off at midnight, without switching to black-and-white IR mode.

Residential Driveway

Mounted under an eave at the garage corner, the eyeball housing allows the lens to be angled toward the driveway entry gate without repositioning the base. Vehicle colour and number plate region become identifiable in colour footage rather than a washed-out IR image.

Common Area Entry - Strata

Installed at a ground-floor lobby entry in a residential block, this camera produces full-colour footage of residents and visitors at all hours. In a body corporate dispute context, colour identification of individuals is more useful to investigators than IR black-and-white imagery.

Small Office Car Park

On a 4 or 8-channel PoE NVR system, each camera runs on a single Cat6 run with no separate power cable. The 5MP resolution covers a small car park bay area in one camera position, reducing total channel count and simplifying cabling for the installer.

Childcare Centre Perimeter

Wall-mounted at gate entry and side fence positions, the IP67 rating handles morning condensation and rain without issue. Full-colour footage of anyone approaching out-of-hours captures clothing and vehicle colour detail that a centre manager can hand directly to police with identifiable descriptions.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Colour identification in low-light or no-light conditions is a priority and the install position is an eave, soffit, or wall where the eyeball housing mounts cleanly without an adapter bracket.
  • You may need a different model if: The site requires long-range coverage beyond 25 metres in complete darkness - a bullet camera with extended IR range is a better match for that application, and several options in that category are available on the site.
  • Pairs well with: A Dahua PoE NVR with H.265+ recording support to maximise storage efficiency at 5MP resolution, or a managed PoE switch feeding into an existing NVR with spare IP channels.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera produce colour footage in complete darkness, or does it switch to black-and-white at night?

Yes, it produces colour footage in complete darkness. WizColor uses a warm supplemental LED to illuminate the scene, keeping the sensor in colour mode rather than switching to monochrome IR output. The tradeoff is a visible amber glow at night, which is a deliberate design characteristic of the WizColor system rather than a fault.
  2. Will this camera work with my existing Dahua NVR?

Most likely yes, provided your NVR supports IP camera channels and the firmware is reasonably current. Dahua NVRs are designed to auto-discover Dahua IP cameras on the same network subnet. If your NVR is an older HDCVI-only unit without IP channel support, this camera will not be compatible - confirm your NVR model supports IP input before purchasing.
  3. Does this camera work with non-Dahua NVRs or VMS platforms?

Yes, in most cases. The camera uses standard ONVIF protocol, which allows integration with third-party NVR and VMS platforms that support ONVIF Profile S. Note that some Dahua-specific features - including certain smart detection settings - may only be configurable through Dahua's own DSS or SmartPSS software or a native Dahua NVR.
  4. What PoE standard does this camera require?

It operates on IEEE 802.3af PoE - the standard level available on virtually all PoE NVRs and PoE switches. No PoE+ (802.3at) or PoE++ is required. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable up to 100 metres carries both power and data. If your cable runs approach 90-100 metres, test the link before finalising the installation.
  5. Is the -PRO-ANZ variant different from the standard international version?

Yes. The ANZ suffix indicates this is the Australian and New Zealand distribution variant, supplied with local warranty coverage and compliant with Australian regulatory requirements. It is stocked by Security Australia specifically for the local market, which simplifies warranty claims and support compared to parallel-imported versions of the same model.
  6. Will this camera handle harsh outdoor conditions in Australian climates?

Yes. The IP67 rating means the housing is fully dust-tight and protected against the effects of water immersion, covering direct rain, coastal salt-air humidity, and the condensation cycles common in subtropical climates. It is suited to exposed eave and wall positions without additional weatherproof housing, though direct long-term sun exposure to the cable entry point should be managed with UV-rated conduit or a drip loop.
  7. Does the 5MP resolution significantly increase storage requirements compared to a 4MP camera?

Marginally, but the difference is manageable with H.265+ compression. H.265+ applies dynamic compression based on scene complexity, so static overnight footage consumes far less storage than the peak bitrate figure suggests. On a Dahua NVR using H.265+ recording, real-world storage consumption for a 5MP WizColor camera is typically modest enough to run 8 cameras on a 4TB or 6TB drive configuration with 30-day retention at standard frame rates.
