Product Overview

Model: AXIS P5654-E Mk II

Who This Is For

When wide-area outdoor coverage with deep zoom is the priority, the AXIS P5654-E Mk II PTZ Camera is the model installers reach for on mid-to-large commercial projects. It suits facility managers and security integrators specifying coverage for car parks, school grounds, perimeter fencing, and open plazas where a fixed camera simply cannot follow movement or zoom to a useful identification distance. The 21x optical zoom gives operators genuine detail at range, while AXIS Object Analytics and built-in auto-tracking allow the camera to act on movement without requiring a live operator behind the controls. Built to IP66 and IK10 standards, it handles Australian outdoor conditions and resists physical interference - making it a practical choice for exposed mounting positions where both weather and vandalism are real concerns. PoE+ simplifies cabling on new installs.

What This Camera Actually Does

21x Optical Zoom

The 21x optical zoom closes the distance between the camera and a subject without digital degradation. In a large car park or open yard, this means a single mounted unit can capture number plate-level detail on vehicles that a fixed wide-angle camera would render unreadable.

360° Continuous Pan

Endless pan rotation eliminates the mechanical stop that causes cheaper PTZs to wind back before tracking a moving subject. The camera can follow movement around a full perimeter without interruption - useful on roundabouts, loading dock entries, or open forecourts.

AXIS Object Analytics & Auto-Tracking

On-camera deep learning classifies movement as human or vehicle before triggering auto-tracking or alerts. This reduces false triggers from wind, shadows, and foliage, and allows the camera to follow a specific subject automatically without an operator holding a joystick.

Electronic Image Stabilisation

At maximum zoom, even minor camera movement from wind or vibration produces significant image blur. Electronic image stabilisation compensates for this in real time, keeping high-zoom footage usable on exposed pole mounts or rooftop positions subject to movement.

Forensic WDR

Wide dynamic range processing handles scenes with extreme contrast - a shaded doorway against bright sunlight, or a vehicle entering from a sun-drenched street into a covered bay. Both bright and dark areas remain detailed in the same frame rather than one washing out the other.

IP66 & IK10 Outdoor Housing

IP66 sealing blocks dust ingress and direct water spray, while IK10 impact resistance means the dome housing withstands deliberate strikes. Rated for operation down to -40°C and up to 50°C, this covers the full range of Australian outdoor conditions across all climates.

Who Buys This Model

  • School and university campus security teams: Cover large open grounds, ovals, and car parks with a single PTZ rather than a grid of fixed cameras. Auto-tracking follows movement across zones that would otherwise require multiple camera handoffs.
  • Retail centre and commercial property managers: Monitor large open-air car parks and loading dock areas where a wide overview and the ability to zoom on an incident in progress both matter operationally.
  • Industrial facility and logistics site operators: Cover long internal roads, gate entries, and laydown areas. The 21x optical zoom reads detail at distances where fixed cameras provide only silhouettes.
  • Security integrators specifying mid-tier commercial systems: The AXIS P5654-E Mk II fits into AXIS Camera Station or third-party VMS platforms via ONVIF, making it compatible with existing infrastructure without forcing a platform change.
  • Local councils and public space operators: Monitor parks, town squares, and pedestrian precincts. AXIS Object Analytics on board reduces the monitoring burden in unmanned control rooms by filtering to meaningful events.

Honest Assessment

The AXIS P5654-E Mk II does its best work as a coverage camera on sites where the monitoring area is too large for fixed cameras to handle cost-effectively. The combination of 21x optical zoom, endless pan, auto-tracking, and on-board AXIS Object Analytics gives operators both breadth and detail without a full-time operator managing presets. IK10 and IP66 ratings mean the housing is genuinely suited to exposed outdoor positions. H.265 compression keeps bandwidth and storage demands manageable across multi-stream configurations.

Where this model has limits: a PTZ covers one direction at a time. High-traffic sites with simultaneous incidents in multiple zones need fixed cameras alongside it, not instead of fixed cameras. If complete 360° simultaneous coverage without any blind spot is the brief, a multi-sensor panoramic camera is a better fit - available through Security Australia. This model also requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), not standard PoE, so switch compatibility needs confirming before install.

Before You Buy

PoE+ Requirement: The P5654-E Mk II requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+ - not standard PoE (802.3af). Confirm your switch or injector supplies the correct power budget before ordering. A standard PoE switch will either power the camera in a degraded state or not at all. If your existing switch only supports 802.3af, budget for a PoE+ injector or switch upgrade as part of the project cost.

Mounting Position Matters for Auto-Tracking: AXIS Object Analytics and auto-tracking perform best when the camera has a clear, unobstructed view of the zone being monitored and is mounted at an appropriate height above the scene. Positioning too low or against a busy visual background (dense foliage, reflective surfaces) increases the likelihood of missed detections. Plan mounting height and angle during the site survey rather than adjusting after install.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need to cover a large open area - car park, school oval, industrial yard - and want a single camera that can both overview the space and zoom to identify detail on demand or via auto-tracking.
  • Good match if: Your VMS is AXIS Camera Station or an ONVIF-compatible platform and you want on-camera AXIS Object Analytics to reduce false alarm events without adding a separate analytics server.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site has multiple simultaneous high-activity zones that must all be recorded with full detail at the same time - a multi-sensor panoramic camera type provides continuous 180° or 360° coverage without the trade-off of a single PTZ viewing direction.

Real-World Scenarios

Large Car Park Monitoring

A retail centre security team uses the P5654-E Mk II to overview a 400-bay open-air car park. When AXIS Object Analytics detects a vehicle behaving unusually near the perimeter, auto-tracking follows it without operator intervention, and the 21x zoom captures usable detail at the far end of the lot.

School Campus Perimeter

Mounted on a corner pole overlooking sports fields and fencing, the camera covers the full perimeter arc via endless pan. After-hours movement triggers auto-tracking classification - human vs. animal - reducing alert fatigue for a small security team monitoring overnight.

Industrial Gate Entry

At a logistics depot with a long internal road from the gate, the PTZ sits at the entry point and can zoom to the far end of the yard at 21x. Forensic WDR handles the contrast between an open sky and shadowed dock doors within the same scene.

Exposed Rooftop Mount

Mounted on a commercial rooftop in a coastal location subject to wind and salt air. IP66 and NEMA 4X ratings handle the environment, while electronic image stabilisation prevents the high-zoom image from becoming unusable when the housing moves slightly in gusts.

Council Public Space

A town square installation uses preset positions to cycle between key viewing angles during operational hours. AXIS Object Analytics on board filters event-based recording so that storage is used efficiently and review time is reduced for council security staff during incident investigation.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a single outdoor-rated camera to cover a large open zone with real optical zoom depth, on-board analytics, and auto-tracking - and your switch infrastructure supports PoE+.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site demands simultaneous full-perimeter recording from a single unit without any blind spots - a multi-sensor panoramic camera type captures 180° or 360° all at once, which a PTZ cannot replicate while zoomed in on one area.
  • Pairs well with: Fixed wide-angle dome or turret cameras covering high-activity zones continuously, with the PTZ providing zoom and tracking capability across the broader space - a common pairing in car park and campus system designs.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera work with a standard PoE switch?

No. The AXIS P5654-E Mk II requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+, which delivers up to 30W - standard 802.3af PoE is limited to 15.4W and will not reliably power this unit. Before purchasing, confirm that your switch or injector is marked 802.3at or PoE+. If your existing switch is 802.3af only, a PoE+ midspan injector per camera run is the most cost-effective solution without replacing the switch.
  2. What is the pan and tilt range on this camera?

Pan is 360° continuous with no mechanical stop, and tilt covers -5° to 90° from horizontal. The endless pan means the camera can rotate continuously in one direction to follow movement around a full perimeter without needing to reverse. The tilt range allows the camera to look directly downward at 90°, which is practical for mounting on poles above a scene as well as standard elevated wall or rooftop positions.
  3. How does auto-tracking work, and will it keep following a subject if it moves out of frame?

Auto-tracking is driven by AXIS Object Analytics running on the camera's own processor. When a classified object - human or vehicle - triggers tracking, the PTZ follows it within the camera's pan, tilt, and zoom range. If the subject moves behind an obstruction or outside the camera's physical movement limits, tracking pauses and the camera either holds position or returns to a guard tour or preset position depending on configuration in AXIS Camera Station or your VMS. The analytics classification step reduces the likelihood of the camera locking onto irrelevant movement like shadows or foliage.
  4. Will this camera work in very hot Australian outdoor conditions?

Yes. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 50°C, which covers extreme heat across all Australian states including rooftop installations in northern Queensland and Western Australia where ambient temperatures and radiant heat from mounting surfaces can exceed typical air temperature readings. The housing is also IP66 and NEMA 4X rated, so humidity and water exposure in tropical or coastal locations are within spec.
  5. Does this camera work with non-AXIS VMS platforms?

Yes. The P5654-E Mk II supports ONVIF Profile S, Profile G, and Profile T, which provides compatibility with the majority of third-party VMS platforms used in Australian commercial installations. Full PTZ control, event triggers, and basic streaming will work via ONVIF. Advanced features such as AXIS Object Analytics event integration and auto-tracking behaviour may have deeper functionality when paired with AXIS Camera Station, so confirm feature-level VMS compatibility with your integrator before finalising platform selection.
  6. How much optical zoom does 21x actually give you in a real installation?

21x optical zoom provides substantial working distance for detail capture - in practical terms, a camera mounted at 6-8 metres height covering a car park can zoom to identify faces or read number plates at distances that would be completely unreadable on a standard fixed wide-angle lens. The exact identification distance depends on scene lighting, subject size, and the specific DORI (Detection, Observation, Recognition, Identification) distances calculated for the lens at each zoom level. Electronic image stabilisation maintains usability at maximum zoom even from exposed mounts subject to vibration or wind movement.
  7. Does AXIS Object Analytics reduce false alarm events compared to standard motion detection?

Yes, meaningfully so. Standard pixel-based motion detection triggers on any movement in frame - wind-blown trees, lighting changes, insects near the lens. AXIS Object Analytics uses deep learning running on the camera's own processor to classify detected movement as human or vehicle before generating an event. For unmanned monitoring scenarios - overnight recording, after-hours alerts, automated VMS rules - this classification step significantly reduces the number of non-actionable events that would otherwise require review. The camera is stocked by Security Australia specifically as part of the AXIS commercial range suited to analytics-driven site designs.
  8. Can this PTZ camera cover an entire site on its own, or does it need to be used alongside fixed cameras?

No single PTZ can fully replace a fixed camera layout. A PTZ can only look in one direction at a time - if it is auto-tracking a vehicle at one end of a car park, the opposite end has no active coverage during that period. The P5654-E Mk II is most effective as the primary investigative and tracking camera in a hybrid system, paired with fixed wide-angle cameras that maintain constant overview of all zones simultaneously. This combination - fixed cameras for continuous coverage, PTZ for zoom and follow - is the standard design approach for car parks, campuses, and industrial sites of any meaningful size.
