Product Overview
Model: P3278-LVE
Who This Is For
For security integrators and commercial facility managers who need a hardened outdoor dome that holds up under both low-light pressure and physical interference, the AXIS P3278-LVE is built around that brief. The combination of an 8MP sensor, Lightfinder 2.0 technology, and ARTPEC-9 processing makes it a strong candidate for car parks, building perimeters, transport hubs, and education campuses where lighting conditions change drastically between day and night. Its IK10 vandal-resistant housing and IP66 weatherproof rating mean it can be surface-mounted under eaves or on exposed external walls without concern for dust ingress, driving rain, or deliberate impact. The integrated IR illumination extends usable coverage after dark without requiring supplementary lighting infrastructure. This is a specification-led purchase - buyers researching this model are typically matching it against a formal project scope rather than fitting a single camera reactively.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP 4K Image Capture
At 3840x2160 resolution, the P3278-LVE captures enough detail to identify faces, read licence plates, and distinguish clothing at distances where lower-resolution cameras produce unusable imagery. A single camera can cover wider fields of view while still delivering evidential-quality footage.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Performance
Axis Lightfinder 2.0 is engineered to maintain colour detail in extremely low ambient light before the camera switches to IR mode. In practice, this means transitional lighting conditions - dusk, poorly lit corridors, and mixed artificial lighting - produce far more usable colour footage than standard sensors.
ARTPEC-9 Edge Processing
The ARTPEC-9 chip runs deep learning analytics directly on the camera rather than relying on server-side processing. This enables AXIS Object Analytics - person and vehicle classification, area intrusion detection, and line crossing - to trigger accurate alerts with reduced false positive rates from environmental noise.
IK10 Vandal-Resistant Dome
IK10 is the highest impact-resistance rating under IEC 62262, meaning the dome housing can withstand direct impact without shattering or misaligning the lens. This is the relevant rating for car parks, stairwells, public transport infrastructure, and any site with an elevated risk of deliberate damage.
IP66 All-Weather Sealing
IP66 certification confirms total protection against dust ingress and resistance to powerful water jets from any direction. The P3278-LVE can be installed on exposed external walls, under roofline overhangs, or in industrial outdoor environments where moisture and particulate exposure are ongoing concerns.
Integrated IR Illumination with OptimizedIR
The built-in IR LEDs use Axis OptimizedIR technology to adapt the beam spread to the current zoom position, preventing hotspots and overexposure at the centre of frame. This produces more evenly lit monochrome images at night without the washed-out effect common in fixed-beam IR systems.
Who Buys This Model
- University and school campus teams: The IK10 rating and AXIS Object Analytics combination addresses both the physical vulnerability of cameras in student-accessible areas and the need for accurate after-hours perimeter intrusion detection.
- Commercial car park operators: 8MP resolution at wide angles gives operators the ability to capture vehicle detail - including licence plates under favourable conditions - across large open bays where a single camera position needs to do more work.
- Local government and public infrastructure teams: IP66 and IK10 together satisfy common public-sector procurement requirements for external dome cameras on facilities like leisure centres, libraries, and transport interchanges.
- Security integrators specifying Axis VMS deployments: ARTPEC-9 and native AXIS Camera Station or AXIS Video Management Software compatibility simplifies device onboarding, analytics configuration, and ongoing firmware management within existing Axis ecosystems.
- Retail centre and commercial property managers: Lightfinder 2.0 handles the mixed artificial lighting common in external loading areas, entry canopies, and night-lit retail precincts where standard WDR cameras produce unreliable colour reproduction.
Honest Assessment
The P3278-LVE delivers genuinely strong performance across the three areas that matter most for outdoor dome deployments: resolution, low-light colour retention, and physical durability. ARTPEC-9 edge analytics reduce the infrastructure overhead of running classification tasks server-side, which is meaningful for multi-site installations. The IK10 and IP66 combination is not marketing language - it reflects a housing that has been independently tested to defined international standards. Where this camera is not the right tool is narrow or long-range applications. A bullet or turret camera with a longer focal length IR illuminator will outperform it on approaches, driveways, and corridors where the scene depth is greater than the dome's effective coverage zone. If the primary requirement is tracking movement across a wide open area rather than fixed-point coverage, a PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera available through Security Australia may serve the project better.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The P3278-LVE is an outdoor dome and depending on the variant, may require a compatible pendant, pole, or wall bracket for correct positioning - confirm mounting hardware compatibility before ordering if you are not using a standard flush ceiling or solid flat-wall surface. The ARTPEC-9 platform supports AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP) apps, but analytics licence requirements vary by application - check whether your VMS deployment requires additional AXIS Object Analytics licensing before commissioning.
PoE Budget Note: Confirm whether your switch or NVR port delivers sufficient PoE wattage for this model. ARTPEC-9 cameras with IR and onboard processing can draw towards the upper end of IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) budgets under load. Check your switch's per-port power budget against the camera's maximum power draw before finalising your PoE switch or NVR selection.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing on an exposed external wall or mounting position where the camera will face weather, potential impact, and variable lighting - the IP66 and IK10 ratings plus Lightfinder 2.0 directly address that combination of conditions.
- Good match if: Your project is running AXIS VMS or AXIS Camera Station and you want to run object classification and intrusion detection at the edge without provisioning additional server analytics licences - the ARTPEC-9 chip handles this natively.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary coverage requirement is a long driveway, extended perimeter fence line, or deep corridor where IR range and narrow focal length are the deciding factors - a bullet-style camera with a longer-throw IR illuminator will be better suited to that application.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a vandal-rated outdoor dome that combines 8MP resolution with edge-based AI analytics and confirmed IK10 and IP66 ratings in a single housing - particularly where the installation environment involves physical risk to the camera or highly variable lighting conditions.
- You may need a different model if: The primary requirement is long-range coverage of a driveway, fence line, or extended outdoor approach - a bullet camera with a longer-throw IR illuminator and narrower focal length will deliver better detail at distance than any dome format.
- Pairs well with: A compatible AXIS-supported NVR or PoE+ switch that provides adequate per-port power budget, combined with an Axis VMS licence that supports ARTPEC-9 device onboarding and AXIS Object Analytics event management.
Common Questions
-
Does the P3278-LVE work with standard PoE switches, or does it need PoE+?
This camera requires IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) rather than standard 802.3af PoE. Standard PoE ports are limited to 15.4W, which may be insufficient when the IR illuminators are active and the ARTPEC-9 is running analytics tasks simultaneously. Confirm that your switch delivers PoE+ on each port being used for this camera, and check the switch's total PoE budget if you are deploying multiple units on the same switch. -
What does IK10 actually mean, and is it enough for a high-risk public site?
Yes, IK10 is the highest classification under IEC 62262 and represents resistance to 20 joules of impact energy - equivalent to a 5kg mass dropped from 400mm. For most commercial and public-sector installations this is adequate. If the site presents an extreme risk of sustained tool-based attack, a camera with a steel housing rather than a polycarbonate dome may be worth specifying, but IK10 covers the vast majority of vandalism scenarios encountered in Australian commercial deployments. -
Will this camera produce colour footage at night, or does it switch to black-and-white IR?
It depends on available ambient light. Lightfinder 2.0 extends the range of light levels at which the camera maintains colour reproduction before switching to IR-assisted monochrome. In scenes with any usable ambient light - streetlighting, signage, spillover from interior lighting - colour detail is retained longer than on standard sensors. In complete darkness, the camera switches to IR illumination and produces black-and-white footage, as is the case with all IR cameras. -
Does AXIS Object Analytics on the ARTPEC-9 require an additional paid licence?
AXIS Object Analytics is included in the firmware for ARTPEC-9 cameras at no additional cost for basic person and vehicle detection scenarios. Additional AXIS applications available through the ACAP platform may require separate licences. Check the specific application licence terms with your Axis distributor before deployment if you require functionality beyond the bundled analytics. The team at Security Australia can advise on licence requirements for specific project configurations. -
Is the P3278-LVE compatible with third-party VMS platforms, or is it locked to Axis software?
No, it is not locked to Axis software. The P3278-LVE supports ONVIF Profile S, G, and T, which provides compatibility with a wide range of third-party VMS platforms. Full feature access - including AXIS Object Analytics event integration and edge storage management - is typically available only through Axis-native VMS products such as AXIS Camera Station or AXIS Video Management Software. Third-party VMS integrations may expose a subset of these capabilities depending on the platform's Axis device driver. -
Does the P3278-LVE support edge storage if the network connection is interrupted?
Yes. The camera supports SD card edge storage, allowing footage to be recorded locally to a card installed in the camera if the network link to the NVR or VMS is interrupted. This is particularly useful for remote or bandwidth-constrained sites where a continuous network connection cannot be guaranteed. SD card capacity determines how much footage is buffered locally before the oldest recordings are overwritten. -
Will this camera work in an existing Axis system alongside older ARTPEC-7 or ARTPEC-8 cameras?
Yes. AXIS Camera Station and AXIS Video Management Software manage cameras across different ARTPEC generations within the same system. The P3278-LVE will appear and function alongside older Axis cameras on the same VMS deployment. Note that some analytics features introduced with ARTPEC-9 will not be available on older camera models in the same system - each camera's analytics capabilities are determined by its own processor generation.
